2 Yep, a Little Different You might notice that this week s Vision is shaped differently and has a little less space than usual. I guess you could say that this is a sign of progress. We recently purchased a new folding machine. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that the new folding machine will not fold paper in the same fashion as the older folding machine! So we are experimenting with a variety of shapes and designs that the new folding machine can accommodate. Some of us are never too excited by change, regardless of how small or insignificant, but in this case, we didn t have a choice. Change was thrust upon us. So we are going to experiment with this design and perhaps with a few others to see what best meets our needs. Labor Day signals the beginning of a busy fall and the start of a little endeavor called college football. Having just completed the fall consignment sale, we are now gearing up for the fall bazaar, which takes place September 28 and 29. The bazaar will be open from 5 pm 8 pm on Friday evening and from 8 am to 2 pm on Saturday. If you can help in any capacity, please let Harold McAbee know. Tickets for the spaghetti dinner on Friday night are on sale now. Incidentally, the last couple of years we have tried to take advantage of the available people-power on the Wednesday prior to the fall bazaar. If you can help us set up for the bazaar on that Wednesday evening of September 26, please plan on staying an extra hour or so. Keep these autumnal dates in mind: our All Saints commemoration of those in our fellowship who have passed from our family into God s eternal Presence will be held on Sunday, October 28. Given the number of dear saints whom God has called home, I know that will be a meaningful service. Children, circle November 2 and 3 on your calendar: these are the dates of children s sleepover at the church. Be limbering up your arm for Ambush! Chill at the Grill will be at the Kremers house on Saturday, November 10. More details later. But know this now: this event is not just for the young and for young families. Everyone in the church is invited to our home on this occasion. Operation Christmas Child boxes will be presented and dedicated during the Sunday worship service of November 11. Our annual Thanksgiving potluck in the gym will be on Sunday, November 18. (Thanksgiving is November 22.) Hanging of the Green Sunday will be Sunday, December 2 (my favorite day of worship), and the adult choir cantata will be Sunday, December 9. The children s and youth choirs will be presenting an evening of Christmas music on Wednesday, December 12, and our annual Offering of Gifts will be the following Wednesday, December 19. I know, it seems early to be talking about the Advent schedule, but it will be upon us before you know it. Incidentally, Halloween will be on a Wednesday night this year. Leigh is presently polling parents and grandparents to gauge their interest in holding some sort of special event that evening. Please let her know your druthers. In a week marked by the significant deaths of Senator John McCain and acclaimed playwright Neal Simon, I find it noteworthy that it also marked a significant milestone. Katherine Johnson, honored by President Obama in 2015 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, turned 100 years old last Monday! Katherine Johnson was the African-American mathematical genius who performed many of the vital calculations for the NASA space program. Her often-overlooked but vitally necessary achievements were brought to light in the contemporary book and movie, Hidden Figures. If you have never seen it, go rent it! It will inspire you! 3 Know Hymn Today we will explore our second hymn, O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing. This hymn was created by two great fathers of Protestant church hymnody (hymn composition) -- Charles Wesley and Lowell Mason. The text, written in 1739, was penned by Charles Wesley, who is known as one of the greatest hymn writers of all time, having written no less than 6500 hymns! The original text of this hymn was eighteen stanzas long, so you will be glad we are only singing six of those today! The initial line of the hymn serves to invite all persons to readily sing the praises of God, raising their voices together. The tune AZMON was written by Lowell Mason, who is known as the father of American church music. During the 19th century, Mason made it his goal to promote quality choral singing in churches and schools. His Collection of Church Music was published in 1822, and this work served as a renewed musical foundation for singing schools and church choirs. Mason is known for his obscure biblical tune names, and AZMON is a city south of Canaan found in Numbers 34:4-5. Look it up to check it out! Youth Today: No youth evening activities. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend. Wednesday: Week four of our Nehemiah Bible Study! Join us as we dive into chapter four Nehemiah struggles with how to endure opposition from his enemies. A challenge from last week -- how are you contributing to the building of our faith community as we build together? Next Sunday: The Rehbergs are hosting Sunday night youth fellowship on Sunday, September 9th from 4:00-6:00 pm, including dinner. Youth choir will resume on Sunday, September 16th. The fellowship will be held at 5695 Sweet Briar Trail, and we thank the Rehbergs for their hospitality. Fall Bazaar help: We will need youth volunteers for the Fall Bazaar on Friday night (Sept 28) for the children s outreach area and on Saturday morning (Sept 29) to help shoppers carry out purchased items. Golf Invitation Our VBC 44th Annual Tournament of Champions will be held Monday, September 17 at Idle Hour Golf and Country Club. If you are not a golfer, perhaps you have relatives who are! Please extend an invitation to them and let them know that registration forms are available on our website or in the church office. XYZ The XYZ meeting on Thursday, September 20 will feature Keiko Tanaka. She is an accomplished vocalist, pianist, and a percussionist. Fall Bazaar...A Coming Attraction Fall Bazaar Steering Committee Meeting is next Sunday at 4:00 pm in Room M-106. Your homemade cakes, cookies, pies and/or candy are always a big hit at our Bazaar Bakery Shoppe. Sign-up sheets are in the Sunday School rooms if you would like to donate. Spaghetti tickets are available each Wednesday night. They will also be on sale outside the Reception Area before and after Sunday School. Look for Betty Hendricks.
