2 An Important Sunday Ahead! Next Sunday will be an important Sunday in the life of Vineville Baptist. At the end of both morning services, we will hold a brief business meeting for a presentation from the Search Committee for a Minister of Music and Youth. Surprise, surprise: Angela Blizzard is the person the committee is recommending be called to this position. We appreciate the hard work of the search committee, whose members are, Mary Kay Smith, chair, Jeanne Easom, Harold McAbee, Cindy Ortiz and Kent Russell. In conjunction with the Search Committee s recommendation of Angela as our full-time minister of Music and Youth, the Personnel Committee will also recommend the hiring of a Youth and Music Intern to help Angela as she juggles these twin responsibilities so important to our church. Angela has said that such an intern would greatly help her, since her music and youth responsibilities often require her to be two places at once, which is difficult, even for someone as talented as Angela. The church has employed a music and youth intern in the past, for indeed, that is the position Angela filled when she first came to Vineville. Surprise, surprise, the person the Personnel Committee will recommend for the position of intern is Brianna Pylant, who has served us ably this summer as our Cooperative Baptist Fellowship ministerial intern. The intern position, incidentally, calls for the person to be paid an hourly wage of $10, and would afford for the intern to work up to 20 hours a week. However, Brianna is presently engaged in the arduous job of student teaching in music education, as she fulfills her final semester of study for her undergraduate degree at Mercer. Since being a student teacher is an overwhelming experience, Angela and Brianna have worked out an agreement that presently allows her to work here as her schedule permits, probably less than ten hours weekly for the present. But Brianna will be free from her student teaching responsibilities in December and will be available to work more hours after that. Of course Angela and Brianna have been serving the church faithfully and skillfully over the last few months, Angela in her interim position of minister of music and youth, Brianna as our church intern. I know that you join me in welcoming them to these new positions of responsibility. Also, next Sunday morning, during the Sunday School hour, we will gather in the sanctuary for a joint Sunday School meeting. The purpose is important. We want to explain to you a new way of approaching stewardship as a way of jump starting our fall stewardship campaign. This new stewardship approach has been dubbed The Pony Express, because it invites everyone to have a hand in heightening the importance of stewardship for our congregation. Everyone in the church will receive a pledge card upon which each of us is invited to make a promise of financial commitment to the church. Then the deacons will visit a member of their flock and take them a box. The member is asked to put the pledge card in the box and either pass the box on to another member of the deacon s flock or ask the deacon to come get the box and take it to another member. The idea is that none of us will let the box stop with us! I also want to share an important invitation: on Tuesday, September 27, at 7 pm, in Newton Chapel on the Mercer campus, Sam Oni will speak on the 50th anniversary of his attempt to desegregate Tattnall Square Baptist. Given Vineville Baptist s special relationship with Mr. Oni, Mercer University has invited the members of Vineville Baptist to be present. Finally, as I noted in worship a couple of weeks ago, Ginny Ferguson quietly observed her 15th anniversary as our church receptionist. Be sure to congratulate her on this milestone in her pilgrimage and ours. A word from your pastor, Dr. Sympathy We extend Christian sympathy to the family of Blanche Westmoreland. Calling all cooks! We need homemade candies, cookies, cakes, and/or pies. Thank you for your contributions to our bakery shop. We need as many volunteers as possible for set-up days on October 6th and 7th! We will begin to set up at 9:00 am on the 6th. Bookmarks and flyers are available! Please hand them out to businesses and to family and friends! Steering Committee meeting will be Sunday, September 25, 4:00 pm, Room M-106. XYZ Fall Trip to South Georgia Tuesday, October 11 from 8:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Cost: $ Reservations due by September 25th. We will leave the Vineville Avenue parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and travel to Tifton, Georgia for a tour of the Agrirama. After our lunch at Ole Times, we will visit Adcock s which has an assortment of nuts for sale. After a short ride we will stop at Calhoun s Produce Farm where a special farm wagon tour has been planned for us. After our tour you may purchase fresh fall produce grown on their farm. You might also like some of their special ice cream. Your ticket includes motor coach transportation, two tours, lunch and all gratuities. Christmas Tour of the Rock Ranch Monday, December 19, :30 P.M. -- 9:00 P.M. Total cost: $ Reservations due by November 20th. We will leave the Vineville Avenue parking lot at 4:30 P.M. for our special Christmas time at the Rock Ranch. Our dinner will be served in the beautifully decorated Truett s Barn. After dinner we will load the wagon for a Christmas Light Display of the ranch. Later you will have time for some last minute Christmas shopping in the unique gift shop. Be sure to dress warmly. Your ticket includes motor coach transportation, dinner, tour of the ranch and all gratuities. Youth Today: Youth choir at 4:00 pm, dinner at 5:00 pm, and skits and drama until 6:15 pm. We are preparing for opportunities to share in worship. Wednesday: We will resume our book of Mark Bible study for the next few weeks. This week we are focusing on prayer and Mark 9. Next Sunday: Youth will join the rest of the church in the joint Sunday School class on September 25th in the sanctuary. That evening, youth choir will begin at 4:00 pm, dinner at 5:00 pm, and we will be creating and preparing for the fall bazaar children s activities until 6:15 pm. You Are Invited Rick Wilson has served as a Mercer professor of Theology since Since late 2013 Rick Wilson has been President at the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary--on loan from Mercer University. In October, Rick Wilson will make his 20th trip to Liberia since early His formal relationship with Liberian Baptists will end on December 31. On November 6 and 13, Rick will share how he has changed in his thinking about Liberia. The classes will meet in the Guest Reception Room during Bible Study and are open to everyone. Music Ministry Vineville Baptist Music Ministry is looking for singers and instrumentalists who may be interested in joining our adult choir and instrumental ensemble.
