2 A Treat for Teachers! On Sunday, October 23rd, two Sundays from today, we will recognize our Sunday School teachers and provide a treat for them and their families Sunday dinner on us! Melissa and I, (mostly Melissa), will provide a meal for our Sunday School teachers and their families in the gym following the 10:45 am service. You should have received a letter this week inviting you to the meal. If you did not, and you are a Sunday School teacher or co-teacher, please consider yourself invited! Just let us know soon whether or not you are coming, so we can prepare adequately. I want to express a word of thanks to everyone who took part in the Fall Bazaar this weekend. This event only works because of the sacrificial work of so many volunteers, and I express to all of you my heartfelt gratitude. Thanks especially to Harold McAbee who works tirelessly on this project throughout the year. But I know he would want me to thank everyone who submitted a craft or baked good, everyone who brought precious treasures from their home for sale, and everyone who made a purchase. All of the money will go to our missions team to fund projects and meet indigent needs. Pledge cards will be going out to church members soon, with an accompanying letter explaining again how the process is meant to work. Our theme this year is The Pony Express. Your deacon will be bringing someone in his/her flock a box and asking that person or family to put their pledge card in the box, then either contact the deacon to come collect the box or take the box to someone else in the deacon s family. If you want to send your pledge card directly back to the church, that is fine. Just let your deacon know that you have done so, to save them an extra visit. As I noted in our joint Sunday School session a couple of weeks ago, this pledge card is simply an expression of your intended stewardship to the church for the coming year. If your circumstances change and you need to change your pledge, a simple call to the financial secretary the only one authorized to see your card will suffice. Some people choose not to pledge. If such is your choice, please send the pledge card in with a zero designation. But our hope and prayer is that everyone will see this Pony Express campaign as an opportunity to have widespread participation in the effort of pledging resources to God s work at Vineville Baptist. Don t forget what I mentioned last week. We will be soon be doing another Advent Devotional Booklet. If you think it is too early to be thinking about Christmas, know that my secretary, Jody, has been playing Christmas music since last week. This year s theme is Favorite Christmas Decorations. Most of us have special ornaments that come with a meaningful story. Let us share those in this Advent Devotional Booklet. Remember also that we will observe All Saints Sunday on October 30. On this day we will recognize and commemorate all in our church family who have passed from our presence into God s. The regular baseball season has concluded, bringing a merciful end to the Braves sad season. But I carry a special, sad memory. When our Vineville contingent attended the Braves game against the Marlins in July, we arrived in time to watch the Marlins batting practice. Standing in front of us was a broad-shouldered young man shagging flies in the outfield, then turning and tossing baseballs to youngsters in the stands, grinning warmly as he delighted in their delight. I recognized this young man as the Marlins two-time All-Star pitcher, Jose Fernandez. He died in a boating accident last week, at the age of 24. Pundits mourned the loss of his immense talent. What I will remember is the radiant smile of a young man who relished his chance to bring joy to others. A word from your pastor, Dr. Sympathy We extend Christian sympathy to Bill and Sandra Hodges and their family in the death of Bill s brother, Kenny Hodges. Flowers The flowers in the sanctuary are given in loving memory of Joan Perdue Cowart by her sister, Joan Carr, as well as in honor and memory of all who have been touched by breast cancer. Men s Fellowship We have a very special guest for the November 1st meeting. In anticipation of Veterans Day, we are excited to welcome Lt. Gen. Claude M. (Mick) Kicklighter to Men s Fellowship. General Kicklighter is a former commander of the United States Army Western Command (later United States Army Pacific), which he held from 1989 to He was also Director for Security Assistance for the US Army Security Assistance Center and Chief of Staff for the US Army Material Development and Readiness Command in Alexandria, Virginia, from and Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Director of the Army Staff for the Office of Chief of Staff in Washington, DC. He is an alumnus of Georgia Military College, Mercer University, George Washington University, and Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In 2007, he was named Inspector General of the Department of Defense, having previously served as Chief of Staff, Department of Veterans Affairs, Special Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of State for Stabilization and Security Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Director of the Department of Defense's Iraq Transition Team, Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning, Department of Veterans Affairs and Deputy Under Secretary of the Army for International Affairs.

3 His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from the Army in It was just recently announced that Gen. Kicklighter will receive the General Creighton W. Abrams Medal for contributing to the advancement of the U.S. Army. A Vietnam veteran who began his Army career as an enlisted soldier and was later commissioned, Kicklighter served nearly 36 years before his 1991 retirement and then launched a second career as federal worker, serving in the Army, DoD and State Department. He currently serves on the Mercer Board of Trustees and just worked to establish Mercer s new Center for Leadership and Ethics, a multidisciplinary effort to develop global leaders required for the demands, challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. He has done incredible work in the 25 years following retirement from active duty. Tickets are only $5 and includes dinner. See Gene Welch, Eddie Wood, or Gene Robertson if you would like a ticket. Thanksgiving Boxes From now until Thanksgiving, we will be collecting food items for our Thanksgiving boxes. There is a cart located outside the church office for your donations. Thank you for helping many needy families enjoy this season of the year! What Are You Thankful For? We are accepting your expressions of Thanksgiving which will be run as a PowerPoint presentation during our church-wide Thanksgiving lunch on November 20 after the 10:45 am service. You may turn those in to the church office. XYZ Christmas Tour of the Rock Ranch Monday, December 19, :30 P.M. -- 9:00 P.M. Total cost: $ Reservations due by November 20th. We will leave the Vineville Avenue parking lot at 4:30 P.M. for our special Christmas time at the Rock Ranch. Our dinner will be served in the beautifully decorated Truett s Barn. After dinner we will load the wagon for a Christmas Light Display of the ranch. Later you will have time for some last minute Christmas shopping in the unique gift shop. Be sure to dress warmly. Your ticket includes motor coach transportation, dinner, tour of the ranch and all gratuities. Youth Today: Youth choir at 4:00 pm, dinner at 5:00 pm, and devotion until 6:15 pm. Brianna and Kent will be leading this evening. Wednesday: Identity of Christ, and we will be studying portions of Mark 8, 11, and 12. Bible study begins at 6:30 pm in the youth room. God-Talk: Next Sunday evening, we will begin exploring big and small questions of faith and life at our first God-Talk session following youth choir and dinner. Candy: The youth will be collecting candy (nothing too chewy) for goodie bags for the residents of Magnolia Manor. Candy donations can be given to Angela Blizzard or Brianna Pylant. Handbells There will be no handbell rehearsals on Sunday, October 2nd or October 9th. We will reconvene on Sunday, October 16th at 2:30 pm. Red Cross Blood Drive Our Red Cross Blood Drive will be Thursday, October 27 from 3:00-7:00 pm in the Activities Building. Please help people affected by disasters big and small by donating blood. Rebuilding Macon Volunteers are needed for a Rebuilding Macon project on Saturday, November 12th. This is a church-wide opportunity to serve in our community. Please let Angela know if you are interested, and if you have specific construction skills. Music Ministry Vineville Baptist Music Ministry is looking for singers and instrumentalists who may be interested in joining our adult choir and instrumental ensemble. You Are Invited Rick Wilson has served as a Mercer professor of Theology since Since late 2013 Rick Wilson has been President at the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary--on loan from Mercer University. In October, Rick Wilson will make his 20th trip to Liberia since early On November 6 and 13, Rick will continue to share his experiences and in particular, how his thinking about Liberia has changed. The classes will meet in the Guest Reception Room during Bible Study and are open to everyone. Higher Life Need Our Higher Life Center needs clean gallon milk, juice, or water jugs for Halloween projects. It takes six jugs to complete one project, so please continue to bring them to the church library or leave them outside the back door of the Higher Life Center. Thank you!
