2 Welcome Frank Broome We are blessed this Sunday to have Frank Broome, Coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Georgia, (and Melissa s boss), filling our pulpit this morning. Many of you know Frank, who has spent much his professional life in Macon. Frank has been serving in his present position since Prior to filling that position he was Director of Missions for the Macon Baptist Association, from Prior to that position he served as Director of Christian Social Ministries for the Columbus Baptist Association in Columbus, Georgia, from Some of you know Frank as a graduate of Mercer University, class of He also earned a M.Div. degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, in He also did work post-graduate work in Social Work and Administration at the University of Louisville s Kent School of Social Work. Frank and I shared a Rome, Georgia connection. A native of Washington, Georgia, Frank married Susan Gardner, whose father was a longtime professor at Shorter College (now Shorter University). They were married in First Baptist of Rome, and Frank always enjoyed renewing his Rome ties when he came to preach for me at Garden Lakes Baptist. I know you will be blessed by his message. While you are benefiting from Frank s preaching this morning, Melissa and I are enjoying the reunion of our family in Gulf Shores, Alabama. You are reading this in August, but I am writing this column in July before leaving town, and as I write a certain image focuses my mind. It is that of my daughter Clara as she stands on our porch in early June, painting the kitchen table (in Georgia Tech colors) that will go in her new Louisiana apartment. On this particular June evening I look at Clara through the window. She is young, beautiful, and excited about the prospect of moving to her new job. I am excited for her but my heart also grieves. Soon she will be over seven hours away too far, from her dad s perspective. I have always thought of May as the fount of happy tears, August the source of tears of trepidation, particularly for those leaving home for their freshman year of college and the parents bidding those freshmen goodbye. For those of you who find yourself in that unenviable position this August, you have my empathy. I have a vivid image of my twin boys, having shared life together since the womb, standing on our front porch, weeping as they hugged for a final time before venturing off to different colleges, knowing their lives would never be the same again. Looking through the window at Clara, I rejoice that she is so excited. But I know that as she begins her professional life a time zone away from us, her life and ours will never be the same. You have heard me say before, we all live our life in chapters. Clara has now left us to start a new and exciting chapter of her life. In truth, all of our children have started new and exciting chapters in the last few months. And though Melissa and I relish the chance to enjoy their company at the beach, we know that our lives have entered a new chapter, too. Our household is back to just the two of us and our dog Jack. It is all a part of growing up and we never cease growing up, regardless of our age. But I don t care how old you are, growing up is hard to do. See you next Sunday. VBC Fall/Winter Children s Consignment Sale Our 2015 Fall/Winter Consignment Sale will be August The public is invited to attend Thursday from 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Friday from 12:00-6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. As always our Activities Building will be jam-packed with incredible inventory and great prices, from quality children s clothing to furniture, toys, maternity, and more! There is so much to see and so much to save! You may pay with cash, personal checks or credit card. Volunteers will be needed so contact Candace Fry if you would like to help with the event. Fall Bazaar Our Fall Bazaar is October 2-3. We need donations of jewelry and any other donations except clothes, shoes, or books. We specifically need small appliances and kitchenware. If you have sewing skills and would like to help, please contact Violet Stover, , or the church office. There are sign-up sheets located on the table outside the Guest Reception Room and the church office which lists many ways that you can help with the bazaar. The next steering committee meeting will be August 16 at 3:30 p.m. in Room M-106.

3 XYZ Upcoming Events XYZ: Alan Parker and Alice Ridgeway will present a musical program at the meeting on August 20. Macon Little Theatre: XYZ will be attending the production of On Golden Pond at the Macon Little Theatre on September 6. The cost is $12 and at we will meet at the theatre at 2:00 p.m. Tickets must be purchased through XYZ in order to get the discount, and the deadline for purchasing your ticket is at our meeting on August 20. Spaghetti Dinner: XYZ will meet as a group at 5:00 in Room M-106 for the Fall Bazaar spaghetti supper on October 2. Following the supper we will enjoy shopping in the Activities Building The cost is $6 and tickets will be available at the XYZ meetings. Back to Pigeon Forge! The Pigeon Forge trip is November Experience Christmas in the Smokies! There is a waiting list only for this trip. Youth Today: School Prayer Journey today from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. We will meet at Vineville and travel to the schools to pray, ending with a yummy treat at Sonic. We should arrive back at the church around 5:30 pm. Come represent your school! Wednesday Bible Study: 6:30 pm, Who are we? Those who love our enemies. Come as we challenge ourselves to follow this particularly difficult word from Jesus! Next Sunday: Youth choir begins at 4:00 pm in the youth/adult choir room! We would love to have great participation from our youth group in the youth choir as we worship and learn together! Come check it out! Youth choir will be followed by dinner and devotion, wrapping up around 6:15 pm. Mission Friends Mission Friends will resume on August 12. Have a fun and safe summer! Kingdom Kids Kingdom Kids will resume on Wednesday, August 12. Have a blessed summer! VBC Annual Golf Tournament Our 41st Annual Tournament of Champions will be September 21 at Idle Hour Golf and Country Club.
