1 A p r i l 1, 2012 The Vision Statement Of Oasis Masonic Lodge # 52 Is That The Lodge: Is A Recognized Active Participant In The Masonic Community Fostering Fraternal Fellowship And Masonic Teachings. Supports The Local Community Through Involvement With Public Schools And Programs Addressing Community Concerns. The Mission Statement Of Oasis Masonic Lodge # 52 Is To: From the East. WB Randy Jager cannot express my appreciation for the overwhelming support that I I am feeling from the Oasis Brethren so far this year. Everyone is stepping up to the challenge of this year s busy schedule, and I believe that we are truly beginning to experience a positive momentum as a result. Preserve And Promote The Teachings Of Freemasonry. Promote Masonic Values Through Service To Mankind And Truth In Life. Inspire Good Men To Seek Membership Within Our Organization. Encourage The Membership To Continually Seek The Truth. Promote Active Fellowship With Masonic Friends And Family. We started the year off with a first degree conferral how appropriate. Brother Dee Webster, the candidate for that evening, began his Masonic career while Oasis Lodge began a whole new year of focusing on Masonry and of course this begins with making new Masons. However, simply initiating new members cannot be the end of our efforts. Once these Brothers are in the door, it is our duty to teach them about the Fraternity and just what it means to be a Mason. The Oasis activities which followed during the month of January certainly supported this idea. The very next week, we took care of business at the January Stated Meeting and made the first Official Visit of the year. Appropriately, that first visit was to our Brother Lodge, Builders 60. The hospitality extended to us, was wonderful. Two Lodges that meet in the same building must certainly visit and work together more often, and the wonderful fellowship warm welcome Oasis Brothers received that evening was evidence that our two Lodges are not doing enough joint activities. On January 24, Oasis Brethren travelled to a Military degree hosted by Green Valley Lodge, where we again experienced a wonderful evening of fellowship and hospitality. The Green Valley Brothers clearly appreciated the large number of Oasis members in attendance, and our own Brother Chaplin, WB Lee Harter was honored as the sole WWII veteran in attendance that evening. I highly recommend to any Brethren that did not have the opportunity to attend the event do not miss the next one! On the last Tuesday of January, Oasis once again hosted an educational night based around several rounds of Masonic Jeopardy. The evening proved to be a truly educational and very fun night. Newly initiated Entered Apprentice Mason Dee Webster participated in the event and answered just as many difficult questions as any of the remaining Brethren. The Masonic Jeopardy game included questions associated with Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shriners International, Order of the Eastern Star, famous Masons, and many more Masonic topics. Also included was a category titled Oasis #52 Potpourri. In this group of questions, the Brothers in attendance learned about both the history of Oasis Lodge and many of the Brethren. Overall, the Masonic Jeopardy educational night has proven to be an effective method of allowing Brothers to learn in an environment of fun and fellowship. It can be as serious as we make it, but the educational content remains nonetheless. In February, Oasis Lodge made an official visit to Epes Randolph Lodge, which once again was a wonderful evening. The Epes Randolph Brethren appreciated the visit, but we had a few less Oasis Brothers in attendance. For the February stated meeting, Oasis Lodge was honored to host Senior Grand Warden, Rite Worshipful Brother Jeff Carlton. Rite Worshipful Brother Jeff gave a thought provoking address to (Continued on page 2)

While the February stated meeting did fall on Valentine s Day, I believe that the Oasis Brethren made all of the ladies in attendance feel special and appreciated. During February, Oasis Lodge held yet another Entered Apprentice degree. Brother Julio Sanchez was initiated on the same evening that Brother Leroy Smith fulfilled his proficiency for the South by opening, closing, and conferring the degree. In March, Oasis Brethren visited Huachuca Lodge. This was again a nice visitation, but less Oasis Brethren were able to attend. Brothers I encourage you to attend as many of these visitations as possible. It is a wonderful experience to visit another lodge, but it is truly special when we show up in force! The Masonic Widows luncheon arranged by Worshipful Brother Paul Weathers for March was a terrific success. The Lodge welcomed a new widow to the group, and it was very obvious that she appreciated the event and recognition of her husband s service to the Fraternity. A nice lunch was had by all, and the fellowship experienced was healing, supportive, and strong. As you may have sensed during my description of the events from the first few months of the 2012 Masonic year for Oasis Lodge, there is an underlying theme of fellowship. A vital part of our Fraternity is held in the concept of fellowship and relationships. Teaching this concept to our new Brothers from a book may be somewhat effective if we are sitting across from them and having a face-to-face conversation about the text. However, I feel that teaching this concept by example is the most effective method of solidifying the lesson for our new Brothers. We are all mentors for our new Brothers, they learn from our actions. If we are not developing and maintaining relationships with each other and serving our Masonic Brothers and Sisters what are we teaching our new Brothers? 4 P a g e 4 From The West W.B. N Dean Millard Senior Warden H ere we are, one third of the way through the year already! It does indeed seem that time moves faster the older you get -- you HAVE heard of that old saying haven't you? I can assure you that it seems to hold true. I am now working on my 8th year here in Tucson and it seems like it was just yesterday that my wife and I arrived and began to enjoy the weather and the people of Tucson. As I was sitting here listening to the rain outside, I was trying to think of an article for this issue of the Trestleboard and suddenly realized that the topic was exactly the reason I was having trouble -- UNCERTAINTY! The uncertainty of life, action, results, etc. We all deal with uncertainty at one time or other in our lives, some more than others it seems. We deal with the uncertainty of jobs, our spouses and even our lives. We plan on being in a particular job for "the rest of our lives" and then get fired the next week or discover that contrary to first impressions, we really can't stand the work. We expect our life partners to be with us forever, but divorce, or worse yet, the plans of the Grand Architect change what we have been counting on for so long. We expect the weather to be what the forecasters have told us it is going to be, but we find that the Grand Architect has again changed things to fit HIS plan, not ours. How we deal with this uncertainty in our lives and the actions we take because of it is what determines what kind of man we are and how the world views us. Masonry can be a big part of how we deal with the uncertainty in our lives. It provides thought provoking knowledge, companionship, stability and a path to better understanding of the plans of the Great Architect of the Universe. Needless to say it won't stop the uncertainty, nothing we can do will do that. However, it does provide a way to help understand and overcome the downsides of that uncertainty. It provides us with a network of Brothers and Fellows who are dedicated to helping us when we are suffering from one of the financial or emotional difficulties that seem to find us from time to time. It provides us with a way to engage our minds in a pastime that is constructive, not destructive and it is doing it today much the same as it has for literally hundreds of years. It provides us a path that allows us to be viewed by the public in a much more favorable way than we would be if we lived our lives without the Masonic lessons that we have been taught. My Brothers, we have been accused of trying to form a "One World Religion or Society" which is, of course, not possible let alone not one of our objectives. But just think about it, what would this world of ours be like if the whole thing was guided by Masonic principles. I know! This is not only impossible, but also impractical as there are just too many different ideas of what even constitutes a good society or world to make something like that possible, let alone practical! I guess that I can just chalk it up to some of that "thought provoking knowledge" and continue on with my life as usual or I COULD begin to apply some of my Masonic training to my actions and help influence the people around me in a positive way. How are YOU going to react to the uncertainty in YOUR life and use the Masonic teachings that you have recieved? I look forward to seeing ALL of you someday in Lodge, or out if you can't make it in. Contact me using my or home phone. Please leave a message on my phone if I'm not available. I DO listen to and answer messages :-)
5 P a g e 5 F irst I would like to say congrats to our new E A, and if I had to give you any advice I would say to enjoy your studying and take time to enjoy the experience before you; Each step forward is rewarding and challenging. I would also like to thank everyone who has helped with the meals, if any one has suggestions for dinner please let me know. Also, along those lines, if anybody has ideas for articles, please let me know. During our initial phase of studying, we learn that 13 masons were presidents, most knowing about our founding father George Washington, but did you know that the Bible that he was sworn in on is still owned by St. Johns Lodge No. 1, Ancient York Masons. The Bible has also been used for the inaugurations of Warren Harding, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush. It was also intended to be used for the second Bush but inclement weather didn't allow it. In addition to its duties, the Bible has been used in the funeral processions of Presidents Washington and Lincoln. The Bible has also been used at the cornerstone laying of the U.S capitol, the addition of the Washington Monument, the centennials of the cornerstone laying of the White House, U.S Capitol and the Statue of Liberty, the 1964 worlds fair and the launching of the aircraft carrier George Washington. The bible itself can only be touched without gloves by a president being sworn in and during airport security when arrangements are made to be searched by hands rather than being X-rayed. The bible is also no longer A From The South Bro Mike Bravin Junior Warden The Silent Summons Author Unknown member of a certain Lodge, who previously attended meetings regularly, stopped going. After a few months the Worshipful Master decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening and the Worshipful Master found his Brother home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for the Worshipful Master s visit, the Brother welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The Worshipful Master made himself comfortable, but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After a few minutes, the Worshipful Master took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth, all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. His host watched all of this in quiet contemplation. As the one, lone ember flamed, flickered, and diminished, there was a momentary glow, and its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The Worshipful Master glanced at his watch and chose this time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember, and placed it in the middle of the fire. Immediately, it began to glow once more, with all the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the Worshipful Master reached the door to leave, his host said, with a tear running down his cheek, Thank you so much for your fiery summons, my Brother. I ll be back in our Lodge next meeting.
6 P a g e 6 TWENTY TYHINGS TO REMEMBER (Old but still appropriate.) 1. Faith is the ability to not panic. 2. If you worry, you didn t pray. If you prayed, don t worry. 3. As a child of God, prayer is kind of like calling home everyday. 4. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape. 5. When we get tangled up in a problem, be still. God wants us to be still so he can untangle the knot. 6. Do the math. Count your blessings. 7. God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts. 8. Dear God: I have a problem. It s me. 9. Silence is often misinterpreted, but never misquoted. 10. Laugh every day it s like inner jogging. 11. The most important things in your home are the people. 12. Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional. (Live it; Preach it!) 13. There is no key to happiness. The door is always open. Come on in. 14. A grudge is a heavy thing to carry. 15 He who dies with the most toys is still dead. Submitted by Paul Weathers, PM 16. We do not remember days but moments. Life moves too fast so enjoy your previous moments. 17. Nothing is real to you until you experience it; otherwise it s just hearsay. 18. Surviving and living your life successfully requires courage. The goals and dreams you re seeking require courage and risk taking. 19. Learn from the turtle, it only makes progress when it sticks out its neck. 20. Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. no matter the storm, when you are with God, there s always a rainbow waiting. Leave gentle fingerprints on the soul of another for the angels to read. I don t want to get to the end of life and find that I liked just the right length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well. From On The Level, Vol. 1, No. 8, November 2005, Page 3. Submitted by Paul Weathers, PM B esides the pyramid, there is no more distinctive symbol of Egyptian civilization than the obelisk, a colossal four-sided pillar hewn by the ancients from a single block of granite. There are actually two of them standing more than 70 feet high and weighing over 300 tons and erected without the benefit of machinery over 3,000 years ago. They were originally erected in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis on the orders of Thutmose III, around 1450 BC. The inscriptions were added about 200 years later by Ramses II to commemorate his military victories. The obelisk were moved to Alexandria by the Romans in 12 BC, during the reign of Augustus Caesar, but were toppled some time later. This had the fortuitous effect of burying their faces and so preserving most of the hieroglyphs from the effects of weathering. When one of these obelisks (Cleopatra s Needle) was moved to New York in 1881, there were discovered among the other emblem one that significance to Masons. It was a mark left by the original architect and it was clearly a square.
