Brethren, I would like to say a quick thanks to my line officers and the brethren of the Lodge who took charge when I was unable to attend Lodge or be at the April stated meeting due to illness in my family. They have shown that they are ready to move up when I vacate the Masters Station in December. On April 18th we had another entertaining and interesting evening. After a brief update on the status of the annual Oasis Poker Run which will be held on November 5 this year, we retired to the Lodge room and conducted a round of "get to know your brother". If you weren't there you missed a really great evening of fellowship during which we learned some really interesting facts about our brethren. Each member of the Lodge who was present was allowed to ask each brother in turn questions such as where they were born, where they went to school, how they met their spouses, etc. It is surprising how little we know about each other and this was a really pleasant event. On April 25 we did a full Second Degree practice with the DDGM present and Brother Dee Webster passed his proficiency to move into the Senior Wardens station next year. It was a great practice and the brothers in the line found out what parts they need to brush up on. As you practice, you play. The annual Oasis Pig Roast took place on April 28 and the brethren and their families who attended were treated to an incredible feast, great music by a ragtime band and the usual good fellowship. Thanks to the brothers who bought tickets despite not being able to attend the event. Due to their generosity, the event was a success. (Continued on page 2)

In addition to the Poker Run, which is one of our major fund raisers, WB Mike Bravin is working on a golf tournament at Golf and Stuff. 4 P a g e 4 F r o m T h e S O U T H Bro Dee Webster Jr Warden Greetings Brethren, as I ponder my thoughts on this Trestleboard article, we are smack dab in the middle of March Madness. Our hometown Wildcats took a hard loss and my heart just isn't in it much anymore. But it got me thinking about sports in general and how it has played a part in my life. From a young age, I was taught the importance of sportsmanship. It is easy to be a good winner but really takes character to be a gracious loser. Knowing that feeling can inspire you to take the losing team's feelings to heart. We have all played a sport or a game and felt the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat but the way we act on both parts is our true character. It can be very heartwarming or very upsetting when we watch professional athletes show us both sides of the coin. Whenever I see an athlete show true sportsmanship, I can't help but root for that player. And on the other side, I tend to disown a player that shows bad sportsmanship. Having coached my daughter for eight years, I always took a different approach than most of my counterparts. I always taught the fundamentals but really put a lot of emphasis on having fun and being good sports. Although our teams were better than average through the years, I always judged my abilities as a coach by the number of girls that signed up the next season. During certain phases of my life, I've put different levels of importance on actually winning. I remember as a child crying when Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys would lose a game. But as it goes, it's just a game. I've always been a fan and still participate in certain sports but I know it is a hobby and for entertainment only. If my team loses; the sun still rises in the morning, my wife and kids still love me, and I still have a job. Congratulations to WB Russell Amling on 60 Years in Masonry!! 5 W o r d s o f W i s d o m P a g e 5 Courtesy of WB Paul Weathers Tyler Being persuaded that a just application of the principles, on which the Masonic Fraternity is founded, must be promotive of private virtue and public prosperity, I shall always be happy to advance the interest of the Society, and to be considered by them a deserving Brother. Brother George Washington A LIVING MASON (*In Practice) His name is John. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He was at the top of his class, kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Mason recently while attending college. After moving to his new town, he finds that down the street from his apartment is a well dressed, very conservative Lodge. One day John decided to go there after work. He walked in with shoes, jeans, his work shirt, and long hair. The Lodge has already started and so John starts looking for a seat. The Lodge is completely packed and he can t find a seat. By now the Brethren are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. John gets closer to the East, and when he realizes there are no seats, he squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this Lodge before!) By now the Brethren are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the Secretary realizes that from the back of the Lodge, a Past Master is slowly making his way toward John. Now the Past Master is in his eighties; has silver-gray hair, and a three piece suit. A good man, very elegant, very dignified, and very courtly, he walks with a cane. And as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that they can t blame him for what he s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid in the Lodge? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The Lodge is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can t even hear anyone breathing. The Secretary can t even continue with the Minutes until the Past Master does what he has to do. And now the Lodge watches as this elderly man drops his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to John and welcomes him so he won t be alone. When the Secretary had regained control, he says, What I m about to say, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. (WB Paul s comment; In Masonry we readily say that we must not judge a good man by his outer appearance, but by his inner moral character.
