This year, there is just six short weeks between Christmas and the beginning of the Lenten Season. I do hope you are enjoying the beginning of this new year, even though we have had two snow falls and some very cold weather already. The Ash Wednesday service that marks the beginning of the Lenten season falls on February 14th this year, which is Valentine s Day. We are planning a morning Ash Wednesday service in the Sanctuary at 11:00 am for anyone who can come out and join us on that morning. I think it is fitting that Ash Wednesday is on Valentine s Day because we know from the Scripture : Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. As believers and followers of Jesus, we are the recipients of that great love. During the Lenten season, we will seek to draw closer to Christ and closer There are a couple of new ways that you can connect to God and others this Lenten season in addition to the regular Bible study groups that are offered. There will be a new small group formed around the study of The Wesleyan Way. And we are also encouraging you to walk with a prayer partner during the Lenten season. The devotion booklets for the Lenten season are on the theme of Practicing love in our homes and in our families. It is so important to love those who are closest to you and live near you on a daily basis. There is a quote from Mother Teresa in the booklet that says: Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do, but how much love we put in that action. So please plan to come out and join in with us this Lenten season as we seek to grow as Disciples and grow in our love for God and for each other. In Christ, Pastor Denise Watkins

2 February Events February 14, 2018 Join us for Ash Wednesday 11a Country Christian Breakfast Sunday Feb. 18th 9am Veggie Chowder 2 cups cubed peeled potatoes 2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 1 cup chopped carrots 1/2 cup chopped onions 1 can cream-style corn 1 can fat-free evaporated milk 3/4 cups shredded reducedfat cheddar cheese 1/2 cup fresh mushrooms 1/4 tsp pepper 2 Tbsp bacon bits 1. In a large saucepan, combine potatoes, broth, carrots and onion; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, minutes or until vegetables are tender. 2. Add corn, milk, mushrooms and pepper; cook and stir 4-6 minutes longer or until heated through. Sprinkle with bacon bits. Yields 7 servings If you d like to share a recipe, please submit it to the church office by Mar. 19th.

Leave gentle fingerprints on the soul of another. Don t get to the end of your life and find that you lived just the length of it. Love the width of it as well.

5 Applying Bible Principles If you read annual reports from publicly held companies or banks, you will frequently see the word fiduciary. Fiduciary is used as an adjective to describe something which is held in trust. It is also used as a noun to describe the one who is a trustee who must account for that which is held in trust. For example, a bank president has a fiduciary responsibility to stockholders in the bank and to depositors who place their money in the bank. A company treasurer has a fiduciary responsibility to the owners of the company. A payroll clerk has a fiduciary responsibility to pay people what they have earned. You may never have considered yourself a fiduciary, and you may never have acted officially in a fiduciary capacity, but in reality, you are a fiduciary. All of us are. That applies both to Christians and to those who are not part of God s family through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We who are Christians will stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ. There, we will not be judged for salvation, since the penalty and judgement for sin was settled once and for all on the cross of Calvary when the Lord Jesus paid the price for our sin. Instead, when we stand before Christ, we will give an account of how we have used what God has entrusted to us. Just as a bank president must account to stockholder and depositors on how their funds are used, we just account to Christ for how we have used what God has entrusted to us. Since everything we have rightfully belongs to him, we will need a report on how we have managed his assets! As you consider how you have used what God has entrusted to your care and keeping during the past few months, what kind of job have you done? And more importantly, as a fiduciary of what God has placed in your hands, will you stand before him with how, eager to report on your giving and management of his assets?

6 First Law of Motion and the Civil Rights Movement Isaac Newton (a 17th century scientist) put forth a variety of laws that explain why objects move (or don't move) as they do. These three laws have become known as Newton's three laws of motion. Newton's first law of motion is often stated as: An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. We have all experienced these forces when riding in a car. Seat belts are used to provide safety for passengers whose motion is governed by Newton's laws, providing the unbalanced force that brings you from a state of motion to a state of rest. In one context, the Civil Right movement demonstrated Newton s laws of motion as it moved against the status quo and worked to bring about change through non-violent means. The leaders of the Civil Rights Movement suffered for the pressure they put on the status quo yet it did not deter them. Jesus moved against the status quo throughout his ministry and conflicted with the religious authorities in Jerusalem. They too tried to cut him down, but once God had been let loose in the world, it was very hard to resist this new momentum. We are a better society today because of a tradition of brave men and women pushing and moving against the status quo. However, inertia is always there, and the United Methodist Church continues a legacy of inclusion through the support of ministries like Black Methodists for Church Renewal. 7 A Hymn History Brief This Little Light of Mine African American spiritual (Matt. 5:14-16) John Lovell, Jr. has commented that the composing of spirituals about the reflective light of stars demonstrates that slave poet s determination to borrow a creative function of stars, and just shine One reason for shining is that you worship a Deity who created light and who deals in it [In this spiritual] the poet is fully aware that his is a modest talent Though it is just a little light, any bit of light can penetrate a mighty lot of darkness. He is proud to be a light and to know that he has the gift of shining. (Lovell, 1972, 287) Long a favorite parting hymn in African American worship (McClain 1990, 110) and the source of countless choral settings, this spiritual took on new meaning in the freedom movement of the 1960 s. As a consequence the movement s leaders and singers contributed additional stanzas: Up and down this street, Lord, I m going to let it shine Every time I m bleeding Voting for my Freedom (Lovell, 1972, 535) Other spirituals in this genre are Shine for Jesus, Oh rise an shine an give God de Glory, and Oh, rise, shine, for thy light is a-coming.
