2 Simon Fraser Province BC and Yukon Page 3 District Message Master of the Fourth Degree Convention is rapidly approaching and there are still several Assemblies that have not requested their credentials, I trust that this is not an indication that they will not have a delegate in attendance at this important meeting. Also there have been very few submissions for the various awards to be presented at the dinner. Deserving, hard-working Knights should be recognized for their dedication and good works. So I would request of our Faithful Navigators to take the time to write a few short paragraphs to recognize those Knights from your Assembly who have striven to make the Assembly, their community and the world a better place. One of the topics for discussion at Convention will be the scheduling of Exemplifications and the installation of Assembly Officers for the coming year. Thus it is important that all Assemblies have representation at the meeting. Greetings brother Sir Knights, After a few months of little activity the pace is starting to really pick up. On March 28 I had the pleasure of participating in a 4 th Degree Exemplification in Richmond. Forty six 3 rd Degree Knights from all over the Lower Mainland took advantage of the event to advance to the 4 th Degree. This was the first opportunity that I have had as Master to preside over an Exemplification and it was truly one to remember. I extend my thanks and appreciation to Faithful Navigator Sir Knight Edgar Ursua and his many volunteers for making it an exceptional day. Most sincere congratulations also to Sir Knight Kim Ng and the Degree Team. Their flawless performance was indicative of the many hours of rehearsal they gave to ensure a most meaningful exemplification. Well Done to all! Sir Knight Ed Panes and the entire convention committee have been diligently working to make our meetings and other events successful and have gone the extra mile to ensure that all our needs have been met. I do look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during the convention. It promises to be a very good weekend. Vivat Jesus Viva Cristo Rey - Wil The next scheduled exemplification is set for Victoria on 09 May. We have booked Our Lady of Lourdes Hall at St. Patrick s parish. Vice Supreme Knight, Sir Knight Neil Gannon will be our special guest for that event, so I am hoping for an excellent participation from all five Island Assemblies and of course any from the Lower Mainland who wish to make the trip over are also most welcome. 3 EMBLEM of the Patriotic Degree - 4th Degree The COLOR CORPS of the Patriotic Degree The triad emblem of the Fourth Degree features the dove, the cross and the globe. The dove, classic symbol of the Holy Spirit and peace, is shown hovering over the orb of the Earth (globe). Both are mounted on a variation of the Crusader's cross, which was found on the tunics and capes of the Crusading knights who battled to regain the Holy Land from the pagans. Spiritually, the sacred symbols on the emblem typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead, the most Blessed Trinity. The Globe God the Father, Creator of the Universe. The Cross God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind. The Dove God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity. The colors of the symbols are: A blue globe with the land of the Western Hemisphere in white. A red cross with gold borders and gold knobs at the end of the points forming the ends of the arms of the cross, also known as the Isabella cross. A white dove. Red, white and blue are the colors of the flag of the country in which the Knights originated. They are used to stress patriotism, the basic principle of the Fourth Degree. 5 INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND Father Alcuin Lawrence Assembly 2018 in Port Angeles, Washington hosted the 39 th Annual International Weekend of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus on March 20 and March 21, Held at Port Angeles, Washington, among those present were 4 TH Degree Sir Knights from British Columbia and Washington. State Deputy Edward Shawchuk and his wife, Lady Sandra represented the BC and Yukon State Council. British Columbia and Yukon Master of 4 th Degree Wil Wilmot with Sir Knights from Victoria, Richmond and Vancouver were also in attendance. British Columbians were welcomed on Friday afternoon by the Hospitality of the Washington Sir Knights in the hospitality room located in the 3 rd Floor of Olympic Lodge located at Del Guzzi Drive in Port Angeles. Celebration of the International Weekend between Washington and British Columbia started with a 5:00 pm Mass at Queen of Angels Church in Port Angeles. An Honour Guard march paved way to the procession of the Mass Celebrant and the church ministry. After the mass, guests were ushered to the Banquet. 8 Pope John Paul I Assembly 2485 (Richmond/South Delta) hosted its Annual 4 th Degree Exemplification on March 28, 2015, held at St. Monica Parish in Richmond. With the birth of the NEW 4 th Degree Exemplification Richmond Team led by our Degree Team Captain SK Kim Ng, and using the NEW version, 46 candidates were exemplified who have come from different Assemblies in the lower mainland. Assemblies who participated with their candidates were: Simon Fraser Assembly 0029, with 4 candidates, Bishop Durieu Assembly candidate, Chief Dan George Assembly candidates, Monsignor Francis A. Clinton Assembly candidate, Archbishop Carney Assembly candidates, St. Lorenzo Ruiz Assembly candidate, St. John Bosco Assembly 3120, 9 candidates, St. Maximillian Maria Kolbe Assembly candidates, St. Francis Xavier Assembly candidates and Pope John Paul I Assembly 2485 with 18 candidates. While the Exemplification was in progress, the Ladies programme organized and led by Lady Priscilla Ursua was also underway, in the Van Dusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver. The 14 ladies who participated had their official luncheon at Shaughnessy Restaurant. Following the Exemplification there was a Mass held at St. Monica Church, celebrated by Reverend Father Anthony Boniface and co-celebrated by Faithful Friar 2485 Reverend Father Raymond Luis, S.A. Honour Guard service was provided at the Exemplification Mass which was led by District Master Wil Wilmot. Following the mass, a 4 th Degree Exemplification Banquet with 168 confirmed guests including the candidates took place at the St. Monica Parish Center. Sir Knights (old and new) with an exception of a few newly exemplified, were in their Black Tux and social baldric and were joined in by their Ladies who with their best looks added to the glamour of the evening. The event with truly a reflection of Sir Knights who put their time and effort working as a TEAM which resulted to an organized event, was graced with the presence of State Faithful Friar Reverend Father Vincent Hawkswell (at the exemplification ceremony); Faithful Friar Reverend Fr. Raymond Luis, S.A., Reverend Fr. Anthony Boniface, Reverend Fr. CLASS HONOUREE SK Keith Michael Joseph McErlane, Past Faithful Navigator October 19, July 1, 2014 BIOGRAPHY Closing Prayer Reverend Father Anthony Boniface Keith was born in Toronto ON, a brother for his older sister, Blanche. He was raised in Edmonton AB and completed his education from elementary school through to a BSc (Hon) Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and then to a PhD at UofA in He attended St Joseph's Cathedral, his parish church for which he helped to raise funds to complete the building of the church. Keith and Barb were married in the newly completed Cathedral in A precious daughter, Shelly was born two years later. Professor ('91) and Pro- At (UBC) Keith was appointed as Assistant Professor ('77), Associate Professor('82), fessor Emeritus ('05). Keith taught undergraduate and graduate courses involving Pharmaceutical Analysis and Advanced Analytical and Research Techniques. He was the supervisor of a number of graduate students ranging from the MSc, PhD and Post Doctoral degree levels. Keith has authored numerous publications and abstracts in various scientific journals. Keith conceived the idea of building a seniors residence in South Delta. He and a number of Knights and some of their wives became charter members of the Augustine House Society registered in '91. Augustine House officially opened in '02. Keith was a valued Board Member but in Dec '10 Keith resigned due to health reasons. Being a practicing Catholic was important to Keith. He served as an altar boy in his youth and was a greeter, usher, reader and Eucharistic Minister and served as the Parish Council chairperson for 3 terms at Sacred Heart Parish (Ladner). Keith became a First Degree Knight and charter member of Council 7916 in '81 and a Fourth Degree Knight in '84 (Simon Fraser Assembly 29). Keith served as Grand Knight of Council 7916 for three terms. In '97 Keith transferred to the newly formed Pope John Paul I Assembly 2485 as a charter member. He served as Faithful Navigator in '04-05 and for many years was the editor of the Knightly Times for the Assembly. He was a District Deputy in ' Keith served as Registrar for the 92nd Annual BC & Yukon Annual State Convention in Richmond and the next year was the convention and conference chairman. He was very active in all aspects of Knights of Columbus activities - including being a member of the Honour Guard

One of the highlights of the evening is the recognition of Sir Knight Pat Young for his 50Years Service in the Fourth Degree. BC and Yukon District Master Wil Wilmot presented the 50Years Service Certificate to SK Pat. Joining the Master, is Faithful Navigator of Assembly 0034 SK Al Schickerowsky. Lady Betty, wife of SK Pat Young joined him in the celebration with excellent food, music and fellowship. The appearance of their children and grandkids came as a complete surprise. Miller, CSB at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Vancouver, British Columbia. The theme of Pope Francis on the occasion of the 101th World Day of Migrants and Refugees is CHURCH without frontiers, MOTHER of ALL. With an attendees of more than 500 people, the beautiful event were represented by 14 different ethnic communities African, Chinese, Croatian, Filipino, Hungarian, Iraqi, Italian, Korean, Latin American, Polish, Portuguese, Slovak, South Asian, Vietnamese. 35 52ND WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS APRIL 26, 2015 Each year, on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Knights throughout the world participate on the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This day is an opportunity for all Knights to raise awareness of the need for men and women to say yes to their vocations, especially if one is called to the priesthood or religious life. With the help of the Knights of Columbus, thousands will hear their calls as a result of our prayers and vocation materials. As Knights, we know the difference that one good priest can make. A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Heavenly Father, bless Your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters. Give those You have called to the married state and those You have chosen to live as single persons in the world the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of Your Son so that in Him, with Him and through Him we may love You more deeply and serve You more faithfully, always and everywhere. Centennial Square to the BC Legislature Join thousands of others from throughout B.C. and Washington State on Thursday, May 14, 2015 for the 8th annual March for Life, Victoria. All are welcome to start the day in prayer by joining us in mass: 12:00 p.m. St. Andrew s Roman Catholic Cathedral (740 View St.) 12:00 St. Patrick s Roman Catholic Parish (2060 Haultain St.) Marchers should be at Centennial Square by 1:45. The March will leave at 1:45pm, and head down Government Street to the B.C. Legislature. Marchers will arrive at the Legislature front lawn at approximately 2:15 p.m. for the Rally for Life, which will have inspirational speakers and lively music until 3:15 p.m. At 5:00 PM there will be a Pro-Life Gala at St. Leopald s Church Hall. The Victoria Pro-Life Gala is co-hosted by National Campus Life Network and UVic s pro-life club, Youth Protecting Youth. The Gala is in support of the Youth Protecting Youth Bursary for Single Student Mothers and National Campus Life Network s work with young pro-life student leaders
