Parkes, St. Petersburg's New Bishop is Installed Bishop Gregory L. Parkes was installed as head of Tampa Bay's Roman Catholics Today. It was a beautiful Ceremony with meaningful liturgical splendor and symbolism. At 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4 th, Bishop Parkes knocked on the door of the of St. Jude the Apostle Cathedral Church to gain entrance where he was greeted by Bishop Robert Nugent Lynch. Bishop Lynch welcomed the towering 6-foot, 8-inch, the tallest Bishop in the United States. Bishop Parkes upon entering the Cathedral was handed keys to the Cathedral and kissed the crucifix offered by retiring Bishop Robert Lynch. That was the beginning of the Ceremony of the installation of Bishop Parkes as the new Bishop of the St. Petersburg Diocese. The procession of church hierarchy that followed, led by cross and incense and candle bearers, included Pope Francis' ambassador to the United States, the archbishop of Miami and the archbishop of Washington, D.C., and a smiling Bishop Robert Nugent Lynch, 75, whom Parkes is succeeding. Early in the two-hour service, Parkes, 52, held up the letter from the pope that appointed him the fifth bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, a jurisdiction spanning Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. Addressing those who had crowded into the cathedral he promised to take time to get to know his flock and to listen to them as he creates a vision for the diocese. Some things, though, will never change, he said. "For example, our care of the poor and the marginalized, our defense of human life at all of its stages, protecting and promoting religious freedom and the dignity of marriage, Catholic education and formation and our faithfulness to the teachings of our faith. And sharing the joy of our faith with others... in other words, to be and to become missionary disciples." He cited Pope Francis several times as he spoke of what it means to evangelize and to be an everyday missionary. "We are missionaries and evangelizers to our family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, those who have left the practice of the Catholic faith and those with no faith, and finally, those we encounter in our daily lives." The diversity of his new diocese was on display Wednesday. Parishioners representing Hispanic, Polish, Filipino, American Indian, Portuguese, Brazilian and Vietnamese cultures had prominent roles in the service. Parks even gave a short piece of his homily in Spanish. Knights of Columbus officials in attendance were Worthy State Deputy Don Goolesby, Immediate Past State Deputy Paul Koppie, Past Curator Tony Nalli. Leaders from other Christian denominations, as well as from the Jewish faith, were among the dignitaries invited to be present at the service in the renovated St. Petersburg cathedral, a legacy of Lynch. Robert Gibbions 1. In December 5131 began the Month participating in the 2 nd Annual Christmas Dinner Dance and Donated $30 toward the Trophy for Bishop Lynch. 2. On December 11th, 5131 had a Corporate Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration at Most Holy Name of Jesus in Spanish & English was able to Prepare 4 Checks for 4 Charities from our Tootsie Roll Drive and Membership Drive. $400 + was raised for each Charity: PARC, Mary s Outreach, Music Sweet Music, and Morning Star. On January 14 th 2017, Ron & Mary DeBiase, along with our Chaplain, Fr. Rich Rosen from St Petersburg Catholic will lead a bus load of 50 Pilgrims to the Annual Right to Life March in St Augustine, Fla. 6. Lewis assembly 0159 January` 10, 2017 Worthy Brother Faithful Navigator, This is the time for the Annual Exemplification of the Ceremonial for Renewal of Obligation. Master Bob Read is coming to our Exemplification Renewal Date of February 1, He asked if I would pass our Date on to each of you and ask if you would like to join us on the same Date and Time. In this way we would have a unified Renewal of the Assemblies here in the Diocese of St. Petersburg, and Master Bob Read would Direct the Renewal himself. Because the Date is coming soon, and I need to know how many will be attending to prepare the Room and the Refreshments, I would like to ask each of you to send me your reply as soon as possible. Snare Hello, I ll be away from the diocese beginning tomorrow until mid-february for military training. I look forward to returning to the Assembly when I am back. On Epiphany, we celebrate the 3 kings coming to see Jesus and to offer their gifts. Upon their arrival, the three kings are overjoyed, they prostrate themselves, and they offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to baby Jesus. In these gifts, we see Jesus' kingship, divinity, and His sacrificial death for us. In the Mass, under the gifts of bread and wine, we see the body and blood of Jesus Christ. God is able to transform our gifts of bread and wine into the body and blood of His son in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Similarly, He is able to transform everything we offer Him for our good according to His plan for us and for our salvation. As the Christmas Season comes to an end, we are called to offer our entire lives, our wills, our desires, our successes, and our failures to God daily so that He may transform them and us according to His will. We should offer our whole lives to God with joy and do homage to the Lord! God Bless, Fr. Ryan Boyle
