1 Saints Alive Volume 20 February Issue 2 Dear All Saints Community, Navigating the Shift All Saints Episcopal Church 1001 Twelfth Street Cayce, SC visit us at As many of you have certainly already observed, there is a great shift going on in organized religion in the United States (and Canada and Europe). Church attendance is steadily declining; there are rising numbers of Nones (people with no religious affiliation) and Dones (people who were raised in a religion or attended religious services regularly, but are now identifying as done with religion). Yet, the majority of Americans still believe in God and are seeking a better understanding of that belief and of spirituality in general. For the past decade or more, theologians, writers, and religious commentators have been observing and studying this phenomenon. The Diocese of Upper South Carolina is asking each parish to engage in a study of how to navigate this great shift in the Church. The three major shifts are: From member identity to disciple identity From Attractional Church to Missional Church From Consumer Church to Sacred Partnering We are using the materials of Pinnacle Associates, particularly the book and workbook by Mark Tidsworth, Navigating the Shift. Your Rector, Senior Warden, and Junior Warden have attended one or more sessions about this study, and the Vestry discussed the materials at our January 14 Vestry Retreat. The plan for our study at All Saints will be as follows: Saturday, February 25 th Shift Kickoff with breakfast and discussion from 9-11:30am Sundays, March 12 & 19 Lenten Season Soup & Bread Suppers from 5:30-7:30pm, concluding with Evensong Sundays, April 30 & May 7 Easter Season Soup & Bread Suppers from 5:30-7:30pm, concluding with Evensong Please mark your calendars now, to be ready to attend these important discussions for the future of All Saints, our Diocese, and the Episcopal Church. In Peace, Patricia+

2 Changes in Newsletter Publication We are changing the frequency and appearance of the Newsletter over the next few months. The February Newsletter will be in the traditional format, but starting in March, the Newsletter will be published every two months (so this will be a March/April Newsletter). We are planning on making the font size larger, and publishing it on 11x17 paper (folded), so each page will be 8 ½ x 11. Of course, this will change the due date for submitting articles, and two months of articles will need to be submitted. For example, for publication in the March/April edition, to be published on March 1 st, please have all articles in by FEBRUARY 17 th. Please give us your feedback as we make these changes. Taylor Elementary. My son's name is XXXXXXXXXXXXXX and he is in Ms. Lanums 3rd grade special education class. Over the Christmas holiday the kids received all kinds of wonderful gifts that were sent home, and I have been told that you are the primary contact for your organization. I wanted to take the time and give you a proper thank you. The shoes and bag of goodies were such an awesome surprise. I couldn't believe just how much he was blessed with! As a parent I try to give my son everything he needs, but when he came home with much needed shoes, socks, hat, etc I was overwhelmed with gratitude. Thank you! He was so happy and proud of his gifts I cried. I am constantly afraid that Christmas will soon be prohibited from school grounds, so these moments are extremely precious for the kids. Please spread my appreciation to all of those involved in making this happen, we are truly grateful. Parent New Chairs! Have you enjoyed the new black chairs in the Parish Hall? Everyone seems to be finding them MUCH more comfortable than the ageing folding chairs. Twenty chairs were purchased with funds from a wonderful memorial gift from the Bruno family given in Eleanor Bruno s name. We would like to purchase twenty more of these chairs, so we are inaugurating a CHAIR CAMPAIGN! Each $50.00 donated will cover the cost of one chair and shipping. Can you purchase a chair or contribute any amount to a new chair? Please turn in cash (in an envelope with your name on it) or a check (with chair in the memo) to the office or in the collection plate. If you have any questions, speak to Pastor Patricia or Senior Warden Mark Gilliam. Let s sit in comfort!

4 From Our Seminarian ECW News Dear All Saints' family, I cannot express how incredibly grateful I am to every one of you for your kind words and gifts for the children during December. You truly showed the spirit of the season and I am thankful for each of you. The children had a wonderful holiday, travelling to see family members across SC and NC. They have now settled back into life in Virginia and are learning new things each day. Matthew is enjoying 6th grade and practices his French horn daily. Toby and Reesa are having a blast at the on-campus preschool, The Butterfly House. Toby continues to loves sports and team games and Reesa has opened a pretend cafe in our apartment, serving make-believe treats to anyone who comes to the kitchen. Classes went well in the fall, and I will continue studies in New Testament, Old Testament, Church History, Greek, and Practical Ministry. During the January Term, I had the unique opportunity to take an Urban Immersion class during which I was asked to teach classes at the Alexandria City Jail. This has been very formative and I can't wait to use some things I've learned in my work with my internship parish in the fall (still yet unknown, more info to follow). Thankfully, Jenn Pilat St. Anne s Guild The February meeting of St. Anne's Guild will be held at 11 o'clock on Thursday the 16th in the Common Room of the Smith Parish House. We are continuing our studies from the book Into The Word by Anne Graham Lotz. Regina Ratterree will lead the discussion on "Love". Read Revelation 2:1-7 and join us for this time of fellowship and Bible study. The annual ECW Diocesan Convention was held at Christ Church in Greenville on 28 January and was attended by Delores Goodwin, Regina Ratteree and Terri Locklair. In the next two months we have several upcoming events that will give us an opportunity to serve Christ through participation in our ECW. On 5 February, after the 10:30 service, we will have our quarterly meeting in the Wyndham Room - bring your refreshments and join us. The ECW Lenten Quiet Day is Saturday, 11 February from 9:00am-Noon with Rev. Kellie Wilson, who will be the Spiritual Leader. This is a wonderful opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for Lent. Please see Delores Goodwin or Terri Locklair to register; the fee is seven dollars which includes morning refreshments and lunch. Our UTO Ingathering is 26 March. Once again, Rebecca Kenner and Joy Sullivan have agreed to be our UTO angels and continue serving this ministry of giving. Ladies of All Saint's, you are all members of the ECW and have contributed in your own special way throughout the year. You have always given of your time and talents and supported us with baked goods, casseroles and your time for our Fall event. We could not have a yard sale without your generous donations (please start saving for this year s sale); thank you, and all the men who contribute as well. All the funds we raise are given back to our church, community and outreach programs. Please join us at our 5 February meeting. Terri Locklair ECW President

(My Story) Session 3: The Call to Sacrificial Love and Living as a Reconciler in a Divided World (Why They Matter for Everyday Life) Wrap Up: Sharing Our Call to Action In 1998, our keynote speaker, The Reverend Canon Kellie Wilson almost died. As she gave up her life and was waiting to see what was next, she heard God s voice. What God said changed her life and led to a deep exploration of God s story and why it mattered in her life. The answers led to the healing of her marriage and to her calling as a teacher, preacher and priest. We invite you to come and explore God s story, your own story and how you are called to fulfill God s mission in this world based on both stories. Bring your Bibles, journals, or other related items. 6 Parish Life Team Musings From Your Senior Warden (Mark Gilliam) We have committed to volunteer three Saturdays in 2017, for Resurrection Ministries feeding program for the homeless (known to us as Hotdogs for the Homeless. We will be helping serve food on March 25, July 8, and October 14. We will be providing the hotdogs and buns on July 8. It's a fun and rewarding experience, and we would love to have anyone participate for any amount of time. Furthermore, the Parish Life Team can always use some new members. We meet on the third Thursday, in even months (next meeting February 16). If you feel called to help within the church parish or in outreach to the community, please consider attending a meeting and/or joining our team! Gilliam. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Virginia Seeds of Stewardship New Beginnings and a time to plan, to learn, to build, to make things better, to share God's love! When we think of giving it brings to mind the daily operation of our church, salaries of the Rector, the Bishop and others, worship and Bible study, ministry to our members, but most of all mission and outreach. "Send us out to do the work that you have given us to do." In my younger years as I had goals and responsibilities associated with raising two sons, buying a house, cars, and various possessions, it seemed to me that I didn't have much left to give to church or to others in need. But I did want to do that! So I decided to give $1 more each week to church. Then the next year I added $2 per week, etc thru the years. It wasn't nearly as hard as I envisioned! It is not just giving money either. It includes time and talent--whatever I can do. Will you consider what you will do and commit to it? Together we can make a difference in spreading the Gospel and sharing God's love. From Regina Ratterree for the Stewardship Team The All Saints' Vestry met this month at Still Hopes for our annual vestry retreat. The rich history of Still Hopes began in the early 1800s when a surveyor, John Gabriel Guignard, was hired to survey the newly established capital city of Columbia. He built a plantation and named it Still Hopes. In 1910, Gabriel Alexander Guignard, his son, erected the Victorian mansion that now remains as the focal point of this beautiful community. It wasn t until just over 50 years later, that his daughter, Dr. Jane Bruce Guignard, bequeathed the plantation and its acreage to the Trinity Episcopal Church with a vision for it to serve the area s seniors (initially only women). Her vision became a reality in 1977 when the Episcopal Church and a Board of Trustees established the viable non-profit community that it is today. Earlier, in 1960, an All Saints parishioner, Red Bruno, who at the time was the superintendent at Guignard Brick Works was able to negotiate with the Guignard family for our current church location. So it was fitting when Patricia reached out to Richard Crozier, the priest at Still Hopes and made arrangements for our retreat to be held on this beloved Episcopal property. Our annual retreat this year included an Act of Commitment Service held in The Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Still Hopes. It was a brief, yet immensely moving, service in which each of us shared our continued affirmation and commitment for us, our vestry and for our parish. We did so by each of us reading words which Jesus had spoken within his life. The words were simple and the message was clear and easy to understand. My words were "Abide in my love", "Follow me". I believe listening to the words Jesus spoke, while attending worship in a 107 year old Episcopal mansion makes for an amazing and reflective experience. We then concluded our worship service with the following prayer. Jesus said,"i am with you always" May God the Creator bless you. May God the Son walk with you. May God the Spirit lead your lives with love. In the coming days ahead, ask me or Patricia or other vestry members their thoughts about our retreat and our inspiring worship service. Mark Gilliam
