1 EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN OF THE DIOCESE OF LONG ISLAND Fall 2015 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE In the last five years the Diocesan ECW Board has intentionally worked to enhance its ministry with Episcopal Health Services, particularly St. John s Hospital in Far Rockaway. Many hospital employees incurred significant losses as a result of Sandy, and the board was able to use Ministry In Action funds (contributed by parish ECW s) to help meet some of their needs. Shortly thereafter, Mother Cecily Broderick, Vice President of Mission for Episcopal Health Services, asked the ECW to work with her to establish a hospital auxiliary. With the help of many of you, St. John s Hospital Auxiliary has become a reality. Presently the auxiliary is busy with two projects: the Adopt-A-Family program which will match parishes/individuals with needy families that are served by St. John s Hospital; and the Community Holiday Party for children in the Far Rockaway area. Please consider adopting a family by submitting a written request (by October 16 th ), shopping, wrapping and delivering packages; and/or contributing toys that will be collected at Diocesan Convention (November 13 th and 14 th ). To make delivery of Adopt-A-Family gifts easier this year, there will be drop off sites in each county on Friday, December 4 th and Saturday, December 12 th. The ECW continues to collect baby layette items for the babies born at St. John s Hospital on an ongoing basis. In addition to the annual baby shower coordinated by the auxiliary/hospital staff, baby items are distributed throughout the year to those in need. I encourage you to join in this wonderful ministry our presence is a living witness. While parking my car at the hospital one day I was identified by a staff member as a church lady. You too can be a St. John s church lady even if you don t live close enough to visit the hospital. There are many ways to help and many hands make light work. Blessings, June S. 2 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 2 ARCHDEACONRY OF BROOKLYN We held elections at our September 12, meeting. We voted to re-elect our treasurer Ancilla Friday, and our fill in Vice President Veronica Williams was elected to office to serve for a two year term Our plan for a fall fund raising event was cancelled due to the renovations taking place at the Billie Holiday Theater. The September meeting is also a call to bring in school supplies for the Children of Promise. A representative from the non-profit was at the meeting and thanked everyone for their support. I reminded the ladies that I was elected a year ago to be their president. With their continued support I will do my best to continue in the spirit of the ministry and lend my support to each Parish and provide encouragement and assistance wherever possible. Sandra Regester, President Happy October Ladies! ARCHDEACONRY OF QUEENS Fall is here and we are back to ECW business and making lives better. I hope that you were blessed with a fun summer and enjoyed every sun-filled day with love and joy. Let s keep it going and praise God for His greatness and love. We collected school supplies for various community daycare centers and schools in our parishes. We will continue to crochet/knit items for Seaman s Church Institute (SCI), Christmas at Sea program. Call me for wool and We will continue to support community outreach at St. John s Episcopal Hospital, Far Rockaway as we serve as Auxilians. See St. John s Hospital flyer included in this publication. The Fall Service Meeting and Ingathering was held at 10 am on Sep. 19, 2015 at St. Joseph s Church in Queens Village. The Celebrant was Fr. Lloyd Henry, and if you were not there, you missed an occasion for spirituality and thankfulness. The school supplies were blessed and donated to St. Joseph s Day School, that s part of this parish and one of the two schools left in the Diocese. QECW would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Rev. Kassinda Ellis to this Archdeaconry as she began her ministry on Sep 20, 2015 at St. Joseph s Church in Queens Village. Join us for the Winter Service Meeting & Ingathering at 10 am on Dec 12, 2015 at St. David s Church, th Street, Cambria Heights. 3 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 3 UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO) The Annual Diocesan UTO Ingathering will be held at 9 AM, November 14 th at the Diocesan Convention, which will take place at the Long Island Melville Marriott. Please join us and represent your parish as we give thanks to God for the many blessings we received throughout the year. UTO offerings are mailed to the Diocesan Coordinator at th Avenue, Queens Village, NY UTO envelopes and blue boxes are available by calling or on line at You have a choice of two boxes This version is a new design celebrating The 125 th Anniversary of the United Thank Offering This version is based on the 1928 mite box Vernese Smith, UTO Diocesan Coordinator CHURCH PERIODICAL CLUB (CPC) This is a reminder from the Church Periodical Club that grants are available to parishes and other affiliated groups, from the National Book Fund and the Miles of Pennies Fund. Grant applications are available from the National Book Fund and the Miles for Pennies Fund. Parishes are urged to make use of these applications to fund purchases of bibles, hymnals and other related literature. Visit the CPC website atwww.churchperiodicalclub.com for applications and guidelines. At the Triennial Meeting on June 24, 2015, the National Board awarded a total $19, in grants to twenty five domestic and overseas applications.
