2 WELCOME Winchester Cathedral is one of the finest medieval Cathedrals in Europe, and we have been welcoming visitors and worshippers for almost one thousand years. Today, over 300,000 visitors come to Winchester Cathedral each year to share in our worship, explore our heritage and enjoy our varied programme of services and events. We hope you will be inspired by this What s On Guide and we look forward to welcoming you to Winchester Cathedral. OPENING HOURS Normal opening hours for sightseeing are from 9.00am 5.00pm Monday Saturday and 12.30pm 3.00pm Sunday. Please note, owing to special services and events, temporary closures may be necessary. Please check the website if making a special visit. 5 GUIDED TOURS A walk around the Cathedral takes you through 1,000 years of history and one of the best ways to explore is with a Cathedral Guide. REGULAR TOURS Cathedral Tour: A great introduction to the Cathedral, its history and treasures. Available on the hour from 10.00am 3.00pm Monday Saturday. Admission fees apply. Audio Tour: Voiced by actor David Suchet, this flexible tour allows you to explore the Cathedral in your own time. It includes music by the Cathedral Choir. A 3 charge applies. Free Children s Trail: This illustrated trail provides a fun and active way to explore the Cathedral. Discover its rich and fascinating history and find out about some of the characters and major historic events that have helped to shape our nation. Crypt Tour: Explore one of the oldest parts of the Cathedral. The crypt provides a stunning setting for Antony Gormley s sculpture Sound II. Tours run at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm, Monday Saturday (not available when the crypt is flooded). Tickets available from the Entrance Desk no extra charge. Tower Tour: Climb up to the top of the Cathedral Tower and see fantastic views of Winchester. See the ringing chamber and the great Cathedral bells and walk the full length of the nave roof. WEDNESDAY 7 NOVEMBER, 2.30PM, PAUL WOODHOUSE SUITE THE MIRACLE FLOWER FROM FLANDERS TO THE TOWER JEREMY PRESCOTT From the iconic poem In Flanders Fields to the 2014 Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, Jeremy will look at the role the poppy has played in remembrance, the controversies surrounding it and how remembrance may be conducted in the future. FRIDAY 6 JULY, 7.30PM WINCHESTER FESTIVAL OPENING CONCERT Blazing trumpets, Baroque dance and uplifting choral singing are all part of this year s Cathedral opening concert as Southern Voices and their partner choir from Braunschweig fill the soaring vaults of the Nave with the glory of Bach. From the intimacy of solo flute to the power of voices and the excellent players of Florilegium, a wide range of emotions will be touched and stirred. SUNDAY 8 JULY, 2.00PM & MONDAY 9 JULY, 3.00PM, LADY CHAPEL WINCHESTER FESTIVAL PRESENTS THE HONEST SOLDIER Summer 1918: Bill Wilson, an American soldier, is billeted in Winchester on his way to fight in the war in France. An encounter in Winchester Cathedral will eventually draw him into a new way of life. On his return to America, he will become one of the founding members of a worldwide organisation: Alcoholics Anonymous. 10

11 Compiled by Philip Glassborow and presented by 2Time Theatre, this new play for voices includes music and poetry from the First World War, with extracts from the writings of Bill Wilson and other contemporary accounts. SUNDAY 30 SEPTEMBER, 8.00PM, QUIRE WINCHESTER FESTIVAL: ALAN HACKER A CELEBRATION Alan Hacker OBE ( ), was a clarinettist and conductor with unusually wide-ranging enthusiasms. He would have celebrated his 80th birthday on this day. Family, friends and colleagues have come together to offer this tribute to his life and work, through music that represents some of his significant repertoire. OCTOBER TUESDAY 2 OCTOBER, 7.00PM, QUIRE LECTURE BY PROFESSOR ALISTER MCGRATH SCIENCE, FAITH AND GOD: RICHARD DAWKINS VS C.S.LEWIS ON THE MEANING OF LIFE Professor Alister McGrath is Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University. This lecture will focus on the relationship of science and faith, engaging with the works of Richard Dawkins and C.S. Lewis to explore issues such as whether we can prove our core beliefs, and how religion and science interact and even enrich each other. Professor Alister McGrath will argue that science may help us understand how our universe works but we want answers to another and deeper question: what is life all about? Join us for live music, children's activities, vintage tractors, falconry displays, farm animals, horse-drawn wagon rides, Hampshire Fare market, local beers and ciders and, new for this year, a vintage food van offering delicious hot food, wonderful cakes, scones, tea and even a glass of fizz. This is a free event. All are welcome. MONDAY 8 & TUESDAY 9 OCTOBER, 7.30PM 9.30PM HENRY V ANTIC DISPOSITION Marking the centenary of the First World War Armistice, award-winning theatre company Antic Disposition present their critically acclaimed adaptation of Henry V in Winchester Cathedral for three special performances. 18 THURSDAY 11 OCTOBER, 7.00PM, WESSEX CENTRE THE ANNUNCIATION: A PILGRIM S QUEST Mark Byford, award-winning journalist and editor, former Deputy Director General of the BBC and now a Lay Canon at Winchester Cathedral, in conversation with Debbie Thrower, broadcaster, journalist and now team leader of the Bible Reading Fellowship s programme The Gift of Years, about his new book. Inspired by a chance viewing of a painting in the National Gallery, on loan from Winchester College, Mark searches for the spiritual meaning of Luke's biblical story of the Annunciation through intimate conversations with more than a hundred senior clerics, world-class theologians, historians and artists. Come to discover what he learnt during his extraordinary, three-year, 30,000 mile devotional journey. This is a free event. All are welcome. MONDAY 15 OCTOBER, 7.00PM, QUIRE PROFESSOR ALISTER MCGRATH THE INCARNATION: UNFOLDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CHRIST In this lecture, Professor Alister McGrath will look at some of the central themes of the Christian understanding of Christ, their basis in the Bible and their importance for Christian life and thought. How do we make sense of the idea that Christ is both divine and human and what difference does this make? 19 TUESDAY 30 OCTOBER, WESSEX CENTRE, 7.00PM PROFESSOR MICHAEL WHEELER BEING CATHEDRAL, BEING ANGLICAN Michael is a Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton, Chairman of Gladstone's Library and a former Lay Canon of the Cathedral. Almost 100 years ago, Dean Selwyn of Winchester edited a book of essays entitled Essays Catholic and Critical in which the contributors tried to square the circle by holding a liberal Catholic position within the Church of England. In this talk, Professor Wheeler looks at Dean Selwyn s ideas about tradition and biblical criticism and argues that we need to bemore fully aware of who we are at the Cathedral, and of where we came from, if we are to square the circle by flourishing as Anglicans in a society in flight from Church affiliation. NOVEMBER SATURDAY 10 NOVEMBER, 1.45PM BE A CHORISTER AFTERNOON The Cathedral is delighted to be opening its doors again to any boys aged 7-10 who enjoy singing. The boys will spend the afternoon with national voice coach Hilary Llysten Jones, and will have the rare opportunity to sing the anthem with the world famous Cathedral Choir at Evensong. MONDAY 5 NOVEMBER, 7.30PM HAYDN SEVEN LAST WORDS Music and readings to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War, featuring young people from various schools in Winchester. WEDNESDAY 7 NOVEMBER, 7.15PM WAR HORSE A special screening of War Horse in the magnificent Nave of Winchester Cathedral. Directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis, based on Michael Morpurgo s 1982 novel War Horse. THURSDAY 8 NOVEMBER, 7.15PM BROUGH SCOTT THE AMAZING STORY OF A REAL WAR HORSE John Brough Scott, MBE, is a British horse racing journalist, radio and TV presenter and former jockey. He is also the grandson and biographer of the noted First World War soldier Galloper Jack Seely. This special talk will focus on the story of Warrior, bred by Jack Seely on the Isle of Wight, taken by him to France in August 1914 and ridden by Jack throughout the war. 21 WENDESDAY 14 NOVEMBER, 7.00PM THE LOVELL LECTURE: MINDFULNESS VISHVAPANI BLOMFELD & BRIAN DRAPER The annual Lovell Lecture, supported by both the Cathedral and the University, is an established event in the interfaith calendar. This year we consider the popular topic of mindfulness, which has been found to alleviate stress, depression and negative thinking, as well as contributing to general well-being. Vishvapani Blomfeld will introduce the practice from a Buddhist perspective and Brian Draper will respond from the Christian position. There will be a time for questions from the floor. SUNDAY 23 DECEMBER, 3.30PM BENJAMIN BRITTEN S CEREMONY OF CAROLS The Choristers of Winchester Cathedral with harpist Anne Denholm, official harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales, perform Benjamin Britten's inimitable A Ceremony of Carols.
