1 Volume XXIII Issue 5 May 2017 WHERE IS OUR PRIDE? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. Abraham Lincoln, Proclamation of a day of National Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer, Where is our pride? Is it in our children or our grandchildren? Do we boast about our sport teams? Our achievements? Do we shine brightest when our accomplishments are brought up in conversations? Where does our bragging rights find their home? Is it with our position at work? Our status in our community? Is it found in our patriotism? Pride is mentioned throughout the bible and mostly in negative ways. Solomon recorded many warnings concerning pride. It is listed as one of the attitudes that the Lord hates (Proverbs 8:13). It proceeds shame (11:12) and destruction (16:18). Pride prevents the wicked from seeking God (Psalm 10:4). It is listed first among the seven deadly sins found in Proverbs 6. Proverbs 28 tells us that it is a proud heart that stirs up strife. We have all likely been in a conversation with someone who is boastful to the point of arrogance. Their attitude will often develop into fighting words. Their opinion becomes the only one that counts and a pleasant meeting quickly deteriorates into a medley of tempers. Pride is destructive to our own selves and to those around us. The Apostle Paul had many reasons to boast; his heredity; his education; his status; and achievements. But Paul s boast was in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Gal. 614). His love for Jesus kept the sacrifice Jesus had made for him at the forefront of his mind. As we are now on the backside of Easter, let s be sure to never put it behind us. Make it the source of our pride and the reason for our boasting. We are sinners for whom the God of this universe came to rescue. There is nothing we can do, say or be that can out weigh that. No boast can out measure the one that says, I m somebody because God loves me. I m special because Jesus died for me. I AM A CHILD OF THE KING! Be blessed, because you are! Pastor Joey 1 May 2017
2 WMU NEWS You see them all the time at intersections or outside stores. There are people holding signs asking for food, money, or sometimes a job. It s hard to know whether they are truly in need or just trying to get something for nothing. What does God want us to do when we see these people, His people. Isaiah 58:7 - Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Matthew 25: Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. Baptist Chapel does a great job supporting the Christian Food Bank of Salemburg. Church groups are also helping with the Backpack Buddies program at Clement Elementary. But what do you do when you see the homeless while you are out driving? You may not feel comfortable giving money because that money may not be used for the purpose you intended (food). A couple of months ago, the BYW decided to tackle this question. We assembled Blessing Bags during our meeting. These gallon ziplock bags contained socks, snack foods, a small bottle of water, a scripture bookmark and hand-wipes. We prayed over the bags and then we each took a couple to have with us in our cars so we could give these out to help meet their needs. Our RA s will be assembling more of the bags this month as part of a mission project. If anyone would like to donate anything to go in the bags, a box will be placed in the old fellowship hall. Water and socks are already provided. Completed bags will be available for any church member that would like them. Suggested Items: Breakfast Bars Hand Wipes Crackers Fruit Cup Beef Jerky Raisins Trail Mix Band-Aids We can t help everyone, but God does call us to help when we can. If you feel led to distribute a Blessing Bag, more information will be available in the next few weeks. Please check with me or Jill Holland. Love in Christ, Wanda Jackson May
