4 drama DISNEY S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST production from the perspective of the drama student 4 BEAST The single hardest part of becoming the Beast is being serious. Not in evoking sadness, but just being...real. While the Beast is by his nature animalistic, his true hallmark is his humanity. As an actor (if I can count myself as one) I have been very fortunate to have been cast in roles that come easily to me. For me it is easy to act as a flamboyant fool, but it is a whole other thing to be a normal person. Early in the production I was worried about being able to be believable. And if I m being honest, I still don t think I m quite capable of delivering normality. Luckily, the Beast has been mentally and emotionally crippled by his disfigurement and so most of the Beast s lines are either in outrage or pain, in which both I am confident. As far as the scheduling goes, I find no grand difficulty in it. Perhaps it is because I have easy classes, but I have been able to keep things relatively balanced. By Sam Wetzel BELLE Belle is a quiet and loving girl that longs for adventure. She knows that she's different, and it discourages her at times, but she owns it. Being different from the rest gives Belle a sense of who she is. It's a blessing because it makes her stronger and encourages her to stay true to herself. It's obviously a challenge because of how the townspeople treat her. They don't like her and go out of their way to judge her. Dealing with Gaston makes Belle long to get more out of life than following society. Gaston also teaches Belle the lesson of how someone's inside doesn't always match their outside. She definitely learns more on that with the Beast as well. When Belle first met the Beast, she hated him for locking up her father. His cruelness scared her and moved her to defiance. But while she stayed at the castle, she started to see the kind and gentle side of the Beast. Therefore learning that the inside is really what matters. A life lesson that I've learned through this play is that everyone has a story, and if you stop for a while and listen, you can learn so much about them. Another thing that I learned was to appreciate my parents, but especially my father. He was deployed for 5 months back in July, and just recently came home in January. I like to think that I can relate to Belle when she misses her father. As for others in the play, there is so much talent. To me, drama is a place where I can be myself and relax. I've made it my goal to make drama practice that kind of place for everyone. I love being a part of this organization and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to be with these amazing people. I can't wait to perform! By Emily Pyatt Parent Connection March 2018

6 UPCOMING MUSIC EVENTS: Please join us in the Chapel Auditorium MLC CHOIR AT LUTHER MARCH 24 The Martin Luther College Choir will be singing at Luther High School on Saturday, March 24 at 7:00 pm in the LHS Chapel Auditorium. Songs will include All Praise to Thee, Eternal God, I Will Greatly Rejoice, and more! Please join us for this special event! More information at 6 MARCH 28 HOLY WEEK CONCERT As he walked from Pilate's palace to Golgatha, Jesus carried a cross and wore a crown of thorns. On that day, Jesus paid the price for the sins of the entire world. It was our cross he carried, and our sins that were taken away forever. On that Easter Sunday, Jesus rose from the grave, triumphant over sin, death, and hell. His crown of thorns has been replaced with a crown of victory, a crown that is ours as well. Please join us on March 28 at 7:00 pm as we celebrate that victory with the LHS Music Department annual Holy Week Concert. More info at APRIL 8 CROSS TO GLORY Cross to Glory will be playing its My Redeemer Concert in the Luther High Auditorium on April 8th at 3 pm. The music will take listeners from Jesus' journey to cross to the empty tomb, as well as many other songs from their 7 albums. It is a concert for all ages and will strengthen faith and lift spirits to sing of our joy and victory in our risen Lord Jesus. Admission is free. We will be taking a free will offering for the Finish the Work campaign. Cross to Glory is a local Christian Music Ministry that shares the Gospel of Jesus through their music. 8 8 NOTES FROM LUTHER HIGH SCHOOL SELF STUDY CONTACT The culmination of Luther High School s self-study is an on-site visit. Luther High will be welcoming eight educators to our campus on March In advance of their visit they will review the reports of the various committees who worked on the self-study. During their visit they will further review our work and get a first-hand impression. A part of the self-study visitation team s work is contacting parents to gain an appreciation of Luther High from a parent s perspective. Should you be one of the parents they contact, thank you in advance for your assistance with the self-study by providing your insights. SCHOOL CLOSINGS REMINDER The motivation for calling off school is for the safety and protection of our students. However, we cannot know the exact conditions in every part of the area from which our students come. If your child normally drives to school, please remember that riding the school-provided bus transportation is also an option. If you feel that the conditions are unsafe, please keep your child at home. If there is no school, the announcement will be given to the radio and TV stations as soon as possible.
