1 Calvary Baptist Church Weekly Newsletter March 8, 2017 Issue 84 A Word from the Pastor Corey Fields I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E 1 A Word from the Pastor 2 Church Members 3 Family Events 4 Youth events/church events 5 Church Announcements 6 Lenten Devotions 7 Up-coming Events at Calvary It s a story that has stuck with me. A seminary friend of mine named Wendy McCaig has a ministry in Richmond, VA that focuses on impoverished communities. They have a lot of area churches that work with them, and around Thanksgiving time, a lot of them want to volunteer to bring turkey boxes that are supposed to help provide a poor family a Thanksgiving meal. The problem was that too many churches wanted to do it, and when Wendy asked them to save their funds to do something during the rest of the year when people will be hungry, most of them insisted and did it anyway. After Thanksgiving, there were unused turkeys lying around in the street, and some were sold for money to buy drugs. This story started me down the path of learning about how churches and their efforts to help are not always helpful. Wendy said something quite stinging: So often we serve out of our own need to serve and not in response to what actually develops people and communities. I started reading books like Toxic Charity by Robert Lupton and Beyond Charity by John Perkins. My eyes were opened to ministries in struggling communities that approached things in a totally different way, and with documented success in turning the communities around. It s called Christian Community Development. But then I noticed something else: almost every effort I came across was being carried out by a nonprofit organization with little to no involvement from churches. I started to wonder: Can churches get involved with this? Why aren t more churches involved? What churches are having success, and how? I took these questions with me and made a research project out of it. Specifically, I used my sabbatical in 2014 to conduct video interviews and case studies of those more rare churches in the country that WERE finding ways to engage in this very locally-focused, intensive, long-term approach to ministry. Beginning March 15, I d like to take 3 weeks to share this research with you during the adult study on Wednesday nights. I ll show you my videos (the ones I ve completed, anyway) and lead us in a discussion. There will likely be some overlap with principles covered by Bill Perkins several months ago, but I think it will be a beneficial time of discussion and who knows might even propel us towards something that God has for us! Missed last Sunday? You can read Pastor Corey s sermon here: You can also always watch the full service on our streaming site: Page 1 of 7

2 Members and Friends at Home Each week a member or friend of the church at home will be highlighted. Greeting cards are always appreciated! Anita Van Horn Brookdale White Chapel 200 E. Village Road Room 227 Newark, DE Anita is the mother of Lynda Parkins. She was married to the late Frank Van Horn. Anita and Frank joined Calvary in 1954, because they saw the church on Delaware Ave and her father said "that little church needs our help." Anita sang in the choir and was active in the Sunday School program. She is a graduate of Drexel University. Anita spent many years as a volunteer at the Emily P Bissel Hospital. In 1976, Franklin retired from DuPont and left Calvary. Anita and Frank went to "work" for American Baptist Home Missions traveling the country visiting pastors, missionaries and other establishing trust funds. They spent the last 20 years in Milford, DE. Anita now lives in Brookdale White Chapel (next to the Newark Senior Center). She enjoys visitors and phone calls. 1 Joyce Lare 2 Anne Elise (Leuhr) Bowers 2 Rowan Duffy 3 Sara Coleman 4 Jennifer Hamilton 4 Megan Koeller 7 Keegan Cahill 9 Kaylee Hickman-Washam 9 Miriam Ramer 11 Gavin Duffy 11 Lynda Parkins 11 Lynsey Hickman 13 Slater Phillips 13 Dan McLeod 14 Erica Chadick 14 Tia Gordon 15 Pat Walker 16 Rebecca Hollomon 18 Nancy Widdoes 18 Mika Jovic 25 Keith E. 4 Youth Events/ Church Events 30 Hour Famine - Friday April 7th, 5:00pm to Saturday April 8th, 7:00pm. All students in 6th through 12th grade as welcome to join us as we go without food for 30 hours to raise money and awareness for world hunger. Students should eat their last meal at school around noon on Friday then meet at CBC at 5pm as we spend the weekend together playing games, learning about how hunger effects those close to home and on the other side of the world, worshiping together, and serving alongside one another. This year we will be partnering with New-Ark UCC church right down the street. The event will end on Saturday with a potluck dinner at 6pm at New Ark UCC youth parents are asked to bring a dish to share! We have some exciting events planned so you don't want to miss this one. See Kyle West for more information and to get signed up! CREATION Christian Music Festival - Tuesday June 27th (meet at CBC at 9am) to Sunday July 2nd (arrive at CBC around 1pm). We will be traveling to the middle of no-where, PA (Shirleysburg, PA is the closest town) for 5 days of camping, Christian music, speakers, fellowship, and fun. This has been a staple event for Calvary students the last few years and always a good time. We will once again be joining up with several churches that our students know including the church of our former youth pastor CG Coats. The cost for the week is about $100 per camper, we would ask that each family pay as much as they can afford, scholarships for the balance will be available. More information on the festival can be found here: Please let Kyle West know if you will be attending this event ASAP. Grilled Cheeses and Jesus Friday Mar 17 is St. Patrick's Day and a major party night for UD students. Hundreds will be passing Calvary on the sidewalk out front. This is our mission field. We are using grilled cheese sandwiches to plant seeds. Weather permitting we will be grilling on the front lawn from 11PM-2AM. You read that right, deep in the night. We hope to serve up some goodies and chat and say a prayer or two. We need folks to man the grills, distribute, chat and pray. Will you be part of this ministry? It won't be easy, but Jesus never promised it would be easy. Contact Tom Parkins if you are interested. mrfizzix@aol.com Page 4 of 7
