3 Vernon Pastor's corner It s been about a year since we moved to three worship services and added additional Sunday School classes, and God has blessed us in many ways. For example, we have more people involved in serving on Sunday mornings because we have created more opportunities more greeters, more teachers, more worship and sound leaders, etc. On Sunday, August 24 th we had 717 people in worship and 738 in Bible Study PRAISE GOD! One of the things that has been effected as a result of the 3 services on Sunday morning has been attendance on Sunday nights. This Fall, we are going to try something a little bit different and reserve Sunday evenings for special events and special services at the church. On the Sunday evenings we are not having special opportunities at the church, we hope you will take advantage of spending time together in home prayer groups, Sunday School fellowships, doing family devotions, and other unstructured and spontaneous times of worship, fellowship and service. Vernon, Pastor Greg Coming October 5 Special Service Anniversary Bud Russell, our Associate Pastor of Education and Administration, will be celebrating his 30 th anniversary as a staff member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Morning Services Bud will be preaching in our morning services. There will be a special recognition time by the Personnel Committee and a look down memory lane at Bud s 30 years of service. 6-8:00 p.m. Gym On Sunday evening, we will have a drop-in fellowship with some special guests and special testimonies. Simpsons (pseudonym) Hi, we are the Simpsons. America is our new home but East Asia has been our home for the past 13 plus years. Before marrying we both worked in India and other places in Asia and around the world since We met on a blind date in Penang, Malaysia which is a really funny story. You re welcome to ask us about that first encounter and hear our swoon theory. We ve been blessed to raise our three kids on Green Acres farm in East Asia where we have lived in a very remote mountainous area serving 26 unreached minority groups that surround our farm. We have a livestock, afro-forestry training center there and our staff are all nationals. We ve been involved in a variety of types of development and education work that has lead to new believers, new churches and countless thousands have been trained at our Training Center and heard the Gospel. Our tenure has been one of amazing victories as well as life-threatening challenges. We d love to catch a meal or a cup of coffee with any of you who d like to hear some of the great things He has done through our work in this hidden mountainous region. We are very grateful to Mount Vernon for partnering with us in one of our strategies which is reaching youth through student English camps. Your work with us and other churches across America is bringing young people to faith. Why are we in America? Well, America is our passport country and we believed now was the right time to allow our kids the opportunity to do schooling in America and have a break from our life overseas. We came to let our oldest have her junior and senior years in an American public high school and then launch her into college. Our plans are to return at the end of two years. In the meantime, my husband will be making quarterly trips back to China to oversee the work and accumulate lots of frequent flyer miles. We also look forward to just being somewhat normal parents of public school kids and enter into their lives and activities in an American context. We are excited to be here, and a little nervous about making cultural mistakes. 9 Youth October Camp Holston, Banner Elk Cost: $15 This three day, two night retreat in Banner Elk is all about discipleship. We will have a weekend of fun, service projects, worship, and the word. EQUIPFootball Bearing Fruit That Will Last Students who have been in our EQUIP Sports Ministry are beginning to make their faith their own now that they have aged out of our program here at Mount Vernon. Hear what one parent had to say about how their junior high season has begun this fall. Eric, Just wanted to share with you what s been going on at middle school football practice. At the end of practice the coach has asked if any boys want to lead the team in prayer. Our EQUIP boys have taken the lead on this and have been praying for the team. I cannot tell you how proud I am of these boys and I know it is because of the seeds that are being planted in our sports ministry. That is why we play EQUIP!!!! To God be the glory! I am so very encouraged to see these boys living it out!!! Be encouraged and continue to do the good work that God has put before you because it is already reaping a harvest!!!
