2 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, You think it d be easy considering all the From the Pastor columns I ve Pastor Will Hartfelder written over 31 years of ordained ministry. It s not. I ve been procrastinating big time. Just ask Tom Seamon, editor of The Voice. I m keenly aware Tom s waiting for me to send this so he can finish up the June issue of The Voice to post it on the Grace website (www. grace43081.org) and send it to members and friends of Grace via and snail mail. But this is my last From the Pastor column for The Voice, compounded by the reality that I m also retiring at the end of June. There won t be any more monthly From the Pastor columns from me. OK. I ll fess up to feeling just a, no, more than a teeny bit of Yahoo! Truth be told, there were times over 31 years of parish ministry when the newsletter deadline loomed over me more than it felt as if it were waiting. Now, suddenly, at least it feels sudden, this is my last one. What can I say? I can say that words can t express how blessed I feel to have been called to serve as a pastor in our Lord s Church over these past 31 years. Neither can words express how blessed these past 15 years and one month have been for my family and me at Grace. It also amazes how quickly they ve passed as, together, we have sought to be faithful to our Lord s call to be Church, the Body of Christ, our Lord s hands and PASTOR S MESSAGE feet in a world no less in need of the Gospel as when the first disciples proclaimed, Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! So many good memories. So many blessings! One blessing in particular comes with Grace s long and faithful history of over 100 years (110 next May) in Westerville. As some have heard me say and as I will surely say again, Grace was doing quite well long before I arrived. And, if I have been faithful to what God has called me to do, the people of Grace will be doing quite well long after I am gone. A few words about that. I fully support and appreciate the wisdom of the expectation that when a pastor retires she or he will stay away from the congregation for at least one calendar year after the congregation has called its next pastor. This means that Julie and I will neither worship at Grace nor will I provide any pastoral leadership or care, e.g., I won t officiate at weddings, funerals, baptisms etc. While some may think this harsh, it is a healthy process for the congregation s long-term well-being. Just as I enjoyed the opportunity to form relationships upon my arrival, so should your new Senior Pastor. This is part of the privilege and the professional ethics of serving as a pastor. Please know that I will be keeping all of your in my prayers as you begin the process that will call your new Senior Pastor. When I thought about it, I was struck by For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope (Jer. 29:11). the fact that Grace has not been in this position for a very long time! When Pastor John Zimmerman arrived in the late 1970 s, Grace soon added another pastor. Over the ensuing years, other pastors came and left; however, there was always Pr. John. Pr. John retired two years after I was called as part of an intentional transition process voted on by the congregation. Thus, this is the first time in 40 years that Grace is in this position. I have no doubt a vibrant new chapter of mission and ministry lies just over the horizon. Trust the process. Trust your Council leadership. But most of all, I say trust that what lies ahead is not on your shoulders alone. The words Jeremiah wrote in his letter to the exiles in Babylon so long ago have been words I have held near and dear in my life s I offer them to ups and downs. you: For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope -(Jer. 29:11). I thank God for our walking together as God s people called Grace over these years. Julie and I have been blessed beyond measure in so many ways. As we look forward to the next chapter of our life together, we will always cherish our Grace memories. With you in God s hands and God s future, Pastor Will Page 2 JUNE 2018
3 NALC Southeast Ohio Mission District Earlier this year, the Executive Council of the Mission District approved an idea to help our congregations know more about the NALC in Ohio, and to become familiar with the other churches in our district. In this space beginning next month, we will run 12 congregational profiles of the congregations that make up the Southeast Ohio Mission District. This month we are highlighting the work of the Mission District and Region itself. The Voice is doing this at the request of Jeff Morlock, the Dean of the SEOMD in order to highlight our partnership in the gospel and the work we do together in Southeast Ohio. In July we will profile St. John s Lutheran, Grove City, as they reference anticipating the arrival of their new senior pastor, who will begin there on July 22. What is a Mission District? NALC congregations collaborate to fulfill the Great Commission in territories called Mission Districts. Each Mission District elects a Dean and an executive council, adopts a budget, provides supervision and support for member congregations, and establishes procedures necessary for carrying out its mission. With what Mission District is our congregation affiliated? The Southeast Ohio Mission District consists of 13 congregations. Geographically the largest district in the state, it includes several mission congregations, a multi-campus mega-church, a bilingual immigrant congregation, and a church plant in Jamaica! In subsequent installments, you will come to know your partner congregations individually. Learn more at seoh/seomd.html. What is a Dean? Deans are ordained ministers of the NALC, accountable to support the work of the Bishop by conducting similar functions in their respective areas. Deans serve as pastor to pastors, their families, and churches, conducting a ministry of teaching and visitation within the district. Who is our Dean? Jeff Morlock was elected Dean of SE Ohio in May He has pastored congregations in Southern Ohio for 29 years, and currently serves at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church in Columbus. Jeff s wife, Pr. Jeff Morlock and family: daughters Bekah and Hanna, and wife Pr. Patti Morlock. Patti, also ordained, serves at St. John s Lutheran Church in Grove City. Together, they have been called or stated interim pastors in 5 of our 13 congregations. They have two grown daughters, Bekah and Hannah. Contact: jmorlock@ualc.org What is a Mission Region? The Ohio Mission Region was formed in May 2015 to maintain state-wide unity when the former Ohio Mission District split into its current 5 districts. The OMR Council consists of the 5 deans of the new Ohio Mission Districts, a lay person from each district, a treasurer and a secretary. One of the 5 deans convenes meetings and the annual convocation, but all share in the duties of the region. The regional council coordinates joint mission efforts and discipleship projects that require broad support across the state, such as the recent financial appeal to help purchase a new facility for the Oromo Evangelical Church of Columbus. Learn more at NALC Disaster Response Opportunities In addition to our prayers, the many victims of recent hurricanes and fires are in dire need of material support made possible by your generous gift. You many do so by going to the website ( or you may mail a financial gift, payable to the North American Lutheran Church, 2299 Palmer Drive, Suite 220, New Brighton, MN Your gift will help provide both immediate and long-term help. Note: All articles from the NALC website and newsletter are printed in the Voice with permission of the NALC. Annual Mission and Ministry Celebration June 10, 2018 Grace has over 60 ministries. Our Mission is to reach out with the love of Jesus to grow disciples and serve our community. Thank God for the opportunity to serve. & The VOICE of GRACE Page 3

7 In the early days of the Congregation, Grace and St. Paul Lutheran in Westerville, shared various programs and resources. Even as late as the 1920 s various publications, including joint annual reports, were published which reflected the activities and organization of both Congregations. The 1922 report, for example, reflects that St. Paul had a membership of 206 Baptized members and Grace 116. Interesting too is the annual budget of expense for Grace reported as $ A projected budget for 1923 was $938. Subscription for the joint monthly newsletter was $.10 per issue or a dollar for the year. A reported slogan for Grace in the Annual Report for 1922 was: The Biggest Little Church in Westerville. 8 The Perfect Pastor The perfect pastor preaches exactly 10 minutes. She condemns sin roundly but never hurts anyone s feelings. He works from 8am until midnight and is also the church janitor. The perfect pastor makes $40 a week, wears good clothes, drives a good car, buys good books, and donates $30 a week to the church. She is 29 years old and has 40 years experience. Above all, he is handsome. The perfect pastor has a burning desire to work with teenagers, and she spends most of her time with the senior citizens. He smiles all the time with a straight face because he has a sense of humor that keeps him seriously dedicated to his church. She makes 15 home visits a day and is always in her office to be handy when needed. The perfect pastor always has time for church council and all of its committees. He never misses the meeting of any church organization and is always busy evangelizing the unchurched. The perfect pastor is always in the next church over! If your pastor does not measure up, simply send this notice to six other churches that are tired of their pastor, too. Then bundle up your pastor and send her to the church at the top of the list. If everyone cooperates, in one week you will receive 1,643 pastors. One of them should be perfect. Have faith in this letter. One church broke the chain and got its old pastor back in less than three months.
