1 Westerville, Ohio June 2013 WE ARE ONE IN THE SPIRIT Meet Grace s Newest Addition! Our congregation was treated to lively musical offerings by Grace s newlyformed Junior Choir of 25 singers on Mother s Day! Marissa Banks accompanied the choir on the guitar, and several high school youth enjoyed leading the choir with hand motions. The choir, which ranges from age 3 thru 5th grade, was initiated by senior choir members Larry Beckwith, Peggy Jones, Sue Mahrt, Chris & John Troutman, and Janet Walston. Their mission is to offer Grace s children the opportunity to share their faith through music. After consulting with Pastor Will and Karen Eckenroth, it was decided that the choir would rehearse each week prior to Sunday School. Junior Choir rehearsals will continue Sundays from 9:15-9:40 when Sunday School resumes in the fall. All interested young singers are welcome. Sing unto the Lord a New Song (Isaiah 42:10). 11th Annual Prayer Breakfast Grace Lutheran Church was recognized at the W.A.R.M. s Annual Prayer Breakfast on May 2 as a Presenting Partner. As such, Grace and the Church of the Messiah U.M. were subjects of the W.A.R.M. Newsletter for May/June The article described Grace and Messiah as being dedicated to living out Gospel values of helping others, exemplifying the common mission of offering a hand up, not a hand-out to those in need. During 2012 Grace was able to help W.A.R.M. by providing 3,773.2 pounds of food and hygiene supplies (not including Thanksgiving bags) and L to R - Suzanne Kile, Joanne Figge, Pastor Hartfelder, Bill and $12,442 (of which $4,707 was from first fruits). 2 The Pastor s Column Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Our daughter Lauren celebrated her 24th birthday in May. Seems like only yesterday her big brothers Kurt and Eric welcomed her as their very special baby sister in our family. How time flies! Julie and I always said three bedtime prayers with our children when they were small: a modified Now I lay me down to sleep (we replaced the scary If I should die before I wake... with Watch over me throughout the night, and wake me with the morning light ); a German prayer from Julie s family ( Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein, soll niemand d rin wohnen als Jesus allein ); and the Lord s Prayer. One night when Lauren was four years old she insisted she say the prayers all by herself. She made it very clear I was not to prompt her nor tag along under my breath. At first I thought I hadn t heard Lauren correctly as she careened her way through the maze of syllables that are the Lord s Prayer ( Our Father, who wart in heaven, hollow wet be thy name ). But what I thought I d heard was what she d said, and forgive us our passed gasses as we forgive those who pass gas against us! Welcome New Members of Grace On May 19th, 2013, the Day of Pentacost, the following new members were formally welcomed to the congregation. Philip and Kristen Beal Carolann Pavich Mick and Karen Knisley Erica Warncke Lindsay Evrard and Keith Harrington Kathy Delozier and Keith Greer You might think my first thoughts were of concern. What would people say about a pastor s daughter reciting such sacrilege? Worse yet, what if they think Lauren s misspoken words revealed more about her family s gastroenterological habits than our theology? My immediate response, however, was one of delight and laughter. And the look of happiness on Lauren s face when she saw my delight and heard my laughter told me we were sharing a sacred moment. Yes, Lauren s theology might raise eyebrows. But to this day I know she was on to something. Our sins, those against others and ourselves (all of which are against God), are a noxious gas that separates us from one another and God. Forgiveness, on the other hand, is that sweet smell spoken of so often in the Bible that draws God and us together (see Genesis 8:21). Lauren didn t get the words quite right that night, but her prayers to our Father in heaven soared heavenward on eagles wings. And with Lauren s prayers went the joy of a Dad handing down to his daughter two treasures of the faith: prayer and laughter. My prayer is that the coming days of summer may overflow with prayer, laughter and faith for you and yours. With you in prayer, laughter and faith, Pastor Will Dr. Memory Jerry Lucas, a.k.a. Dr. Memory; named one of the 50 greatest players in National Basketball Association history was at the door of the church on April 28 greeting Grace worshipers as they entered. His forty-five minute message at both services captured the attention of all in attendance including a seven year-old boy sitting in the front row. Attendance was good at his Sunday and Monday night presentations. Jerry s commitment to memory education and his Christian witness was well-received by both congregation and community members. The love offering for his ministry totaled $1800. Jerry Lucas and Mary Bivins The VOICE of Grace June Page 2
3 Getting to Know the History of Westerville Concert Series The Westerville Habitat Partnership, of which our church is a longtime member, is sponsoring Tapestry of a Town - a walking tour of historic Uptown Westerville on Sunday, July 28 from 1-5 PM. Our town has many interesting threads - education, faith, commerce, recreation and active participation in some of the most important movements of the 18th and 19th centuries - temperance and the Underground Railroad; these have been woven together over the years to create the dynamic and welcoming place we call home. We hope many of you will join this celebration of Westerville s heritage by attending this fun event. Your ticket includes a booklet of information with a map for the selfguided tour, so you can start anywhere and go in any order that works for you. Well-informed guides will greet you at each location and there could be some entertainment, too. Please mark your calendars for Tapestry of a Town and invite your friends and family to join you. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the church or at the Westerville Convention and Visitors Bureau, 20 W. Main St. in Westerville. Many thanks to those of you who supported Habitat Partnership in April by dining at City Barbecue. Over $600 for Habitat was raised just by chowing down on ribs! For more information see Ray Bertelsen or Patti Barb. 4 Stewardship Corner Ten Principles for Graceful Giving* This is the sixth in a series on ten principles for the Christian disciple s graceful giving. Each principle is reflected in St. Paul s words (2nd Corinthians, chapters 8 and 9) to the new Christians in the prosperous, hustling and bustling first century city of Corinth. Scripture references are from the New Revised Standard Version. Principle Six: - Christian giving always involves preparation St. Paul writes: But thanks be to God who put in the heart of Titus the same eagerness for you that I myself have. 17For he not only accepted our appeal, but since he is more eager than ever, he is going to you of his own accord. 18With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his proclaiming the good news; 19and not only that, but he has also been appointed by the churches to travel with us while we are administering this generous undertaking for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our goodwill. 20We intend that no one should Katharine Circle is having dinner together on June 4 at 6:00 p.m. at Giammarco s Restaurant. We will meet again in September. Come join us! Katharine Circle is having dinner together on June 4 at 6:00 p.m. at Giammarco s Restaruant. We will meet again in September. Come Join us! blame us about this generous gift that we are administering, 21for we intend to do what is right not only in the Lord s sight but also in the sight of others. 22And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found eager in many matters, but who is now more eager than ever because of his great confidence in you. 23As for Titus, he is my partner and co-worker in your service; as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24Therefore openly before the churches, show them the proof of your love and of our reason for boasting about you. (2 Cor 8:16-24). Contrary to what many, even many Christians, often think, Christian stewardship is unlike any other giving. It s not fund raising. It s more than giving to a good cause. It s not something we do naturally. This sort of thinking leads to the if I like it or if I get something out of it motivation for giving. Or, worse yet, it is seen in last minute giving that leads a person to throw a couple of bucks into the plate every now and then. No. As we have seen in this series, Christian giving is an intentional response to the gift of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Many churches get into arguments over having someone help them in their giving, e.g., a financial campaign director. Others debate whether they should ask people to pledge or estimate their giving. Yet, when we look at the Bible, we see that intentional preparation is a hallmark of Christian stewardship. Thus, Paul not only writes to the new Christians in Corinth about giving, he also sends help so they may prepare and be intentional in their giving. He sends Titus and the brother who is famous among all the churches for his proclaiming the good news. Our giving is an essential part of our faithful response to the prophet s call: Prepare the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3). 7 Grace Sunday School News The 2nd/3rd grade Sunday School class studied the Ascension and the Great Commission during the S.S. hour on May 12. They shared the Good News by creating sidewalk chalk pictures and messages by the east side entrance. These are all original creations by the children and contain very meaningful messages. Yet another way the Grace Youth reach out with the love of Jesus! See you all on Rally Day in the Fall! YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRY The Grace Lutheran Youth and Family Ministry will honor these Munchkin Ministry Graduates in church on Sunday, June 2nd: Abi DeTemple Jack Funk Sam Goodman Calista Bright When children finish Kindergarten, they also graduate from Munchkin Ministry and will be presented with a learning Bible that will carry them to confirmation. The Youth and Family Ministry and Learning Ministry want to emphasize that all children are welcome to participate at any time throughout the year. If your child is only able to participate once or sporadically through the year, we still welcome his/her involvement. G r a c e Evangelical Lutheran Church has been serving the Westerville Community for more than 100 years, supporting local ministries such as the Westerville Area Resource Ministry, Westerville Partnership Habitat for Humanity and Westerville CROP Walk. Grace also supports Lutheran Social Services programs like Faith Mission and provides weekly meeting space for Boy Scout Troop 502 and two AA groups. People in Ministry Shows Progress People in Ministry is at the ground level and slowly moving upward. The Church Office Admnistrator Kathy Snead and People and Ministry Coordinator Carolyn Martin have the surveys that were turned in and have notified Ministry Leads of the people with an interest in their area. This has taken a little longer than we anticipated because of several computer glitches, but is moving forward. As a reminder, Carolyn serves as a clearing house to direct those contacts to the ministry team leaders who then contacts that person. This is important because: a) it is a good way for the ministry team leader to have an initial, positive (invitational) contact with a member; b) the person will have contact with the team leader and be able to ask any ministry-specific questions she or he may have and ask them of the person best able to respond; c) the newest person would then not have to seek out and walk into a new group cold after having had the contact with the team leader. Also, after leaders have made contact with the person, they will contact Carolyn and she will code them in the computer program. This moves that name from INTEREST to ACTIVE. People in Ministry hopes to have all names entered in the computer by Sunday, June 2. Carolyn will then share with the congregation how many are participating in ministries and where there are holes. This will aid leaders in identifying members to help in their ministry. To add you name and/or ministry to the list, forward it to Carolyn Martin, People in Ministry Seraphina Sisters On Friday, June 14th, 7:00 pm, Seraphina will meet for the June gathering, Flip Flops and Fruity Drinks. The evening will begin with a devotion, then The sisters will kick off summer by decorating one or more pairs of flip flops. Each sister should bring a pair of shoes to donate to charity, one or more pair of basic flip flops, and materials to share for decorating (ribbon, silk flowers, beads, use your imagination!) 9 We re so glad you asked.....a response to questions and concerns on a variety of topics. If you have a question, please put it in writing and deliver it to the Church Office or it to: office@grace43081.org. Questions must be signed. Question: Must someone who is a baptized, life-long Lutheran attend New Member/Discipleship classes to become a member at Grace? Response: This can often be a touchy question for life-long or near life-long Lutherans. The short response is: Yes. The longer response offers reasons for why the answer is yes. Our present practice at Grace is to require those who wish to be welcomed as members in the formal sense to attend two sessions. These are offered on two successive Sunday afternoons. They include a fellowship meal and nursery care when needed. The first session provides a brief introduction/review of a Lutheran expression of the Christian faith. Those new to the Lutheran church are usually eager to learn more. Those already familiar with the Lutheran Church benefit from a refresher on our Lutheran heritage. The second session focuses on the mission and ministry of Grace. Representatives of Grace s ministries provide an introduction to each area so that our newest members can appreciate the many ways their new church family seeks to be faithful to our Lord s call to follow him. This session also includes: a tour of the church facility which can be a very confusing place to newcomers; a personal inventory of each person s spiritual gifts and interests to enhance their opportunities to become involved in their new church home. Another benefit of the New Member/Discipleship classes for both new and long-time Lutherans is the opportunity to get to know others who have decided to call Grace their church home. Joining a congregation, that is, living as a member of the Body of Christ, is far more than a matter of membership. It is about relationships. It is about living in community with those who in Holy Baptism have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever. It is about supporting one another in our worship, our learning, our giving and our serving. First and foremost, it is about discipleship and our response to Jesus who calls, Follow me! 11 Susie Finds Grace at Grace by Rudy Kolberg Susie Mallard and her mate, Drake, first came to the parking lot near the main entrance at Grace Lutheran Church on March 15. They selected her nesting place in some low bushes on the little island between the handicapped parking lot and the driveway past the front door. After two weeks of laying eggs, she began to incubate them on Easter Sunday, March 31. Drake would occasionally stop by to see how she was doing. When Susie left the nest for a short time, she would cover the eggs with insulating down from her breast. Even on Sundays when there were many people and cars all around her, Susie would steadfastly stay on the nest. She seemed to enjoy having the children watch her. The usual four weeks went by and all was quiet. Everything changed early on Thursday, May 2. A Little Blessings pre-school teacher saw Susie frantically pacing and quacking around the storm sewer grating on the east side of the church driveway. All 12 ducklings had fallen through the openings. Seraphina Sisters Hosts Kitchen Krew On Friday, May 17th, at 6:30 PM, Seraphina Sisters showed their appreciation to the women of the Kitchen Krew by cooking and hosting a dinner for them at Grace. It was a time to recognize the Kitchen Krew s hard work and importance to the many ministries of Grace and to give them a well-deserved break from serving our congregation! It was attended by the the women of the Kitchen Krew, their spouses, and both pastors. Thanks Kitchen Krew The women of the Kitchen Krew and their guests throughly enjoyed the dinner prepared and hosted by the Seraphina Sisters. They wish to express their gratitude for their thoughfulness. The future of Grace is so bright. Thank you dear Sisters. A grand thank you... The teacher ran into the church looking for Paul Hotchkiss, frantically crying, Help me, Help me! Paul was equal to the occasion. He removed the heavy grating and set a ladder into the holw and went down and retrieved the little fuzzballs one by one and returned them to Susie. Suzie was last seen heading east across the parking lot, likely heading for the little lake to the east. Susie had found grace for her family through her human helpers at Grace Lutheran. The VOICE of Grace...for the warm welcome home reception you had for my book signing Walk In My Shoes. It was an emotional day with all of my Rachel Gangestad, Earlene, Carolyn Gibboney sisters and brothers in Christ taking the walk with me. The Kitchen Krew did a fantastic job and everyone else that helped set up the hospitality area, it was a day I experienced Gods blessing in each of you. With love/ Blessings, Earlene and Max Whitaker June Page 11
