He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. 3 Join Us in Helping to End Human Trafficking Freedom Sunday and Wednesday Prayer Gathering May 6 & May 9, 2018 Please join us for two events to learn more about the evils of human trafficking and pray it to end. These are great opportunities for those involved in Social Justice Ministries, are endorsed by Bishop McGrath and sponsored by International Justice Missions and the Catholic Network to end Human Trafficking. Annual Diocesan Appeal 2018 A collaboration in which every parish contributes toward the support of ministries and services rendered by our Diocese of San Jose. The Cathedral goal this year is $135,500. Each household taking part in the campaign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward helping our Diocese fund education, training and service to the faithful in all the Diocese. This includes Vocations (studies & housing), Ministerial training, Ministry in the jails, Social Ministries, Chancery operational expenses, Youth programs and the Office for the protection of the Vulnerable. Contributions that surpass the parish goal of $135,500 are rebated to our parish directly. We have attained $116,076 in pledges thus far from 226 donors. It is not too late to commit to a pledge. Pedro, born into a poor family on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, very much wanted to become a priest. He was a shepherd until age 24, when he journeyed to Guatemala, hoping to connect with a relative there. By the time he reached Havana, he was out of money. After working there to earn more, he got to Guatemala City the following year but was so destitute that he joined the breadline established by the Franciscans. Soon, Pedro enrolled in the local Jesuit college in hopes of studying for the priesthood but had difficulty mastering the classes. In 1655, he joined the Secular Franciscan Order. Three years later, he opened a hospital for the convalescent poor; a shelter for the homeless and a school for the poor soon followed. Not wanting to neglect the rich of Guatemala City, Pedro began walking through their part of town ringing a bell and inviting them to repent. Other men came to share in Pedro s work. Out of this group came the Bethlehemite Congregation, which won papal approval after Pedro s death. A Bethlehemite sisters community founded after Pedro s death was inspired by his life of prayer and compassion. He is sometimes credited with originating the Christmas Eve posadas procession in which people representing Mary and Joseph seek a night s lodging from their neighbors. The custom soon spread to Mexico and other Central American countries. Pedro died in 1667, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in Guatemala City on July 30, Calling the new saint an outstanding example of Christian mercy, the Holy Father noted that Saint Pedro practiced mercy heroically with the lowliest and the most deprived. Speaking to the estimated 500,000 Guatemalans in attendance, the Holy Father spoke of the social ills that plague the country today and of the need for change. 5 INSIDE/OUTSIDE Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tuesday of each month at the Women s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4 th Street, San Jose The purpose of this group is to provide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time. Recall that John tells the story of Jesus Last Supper differently from the other Evangelists. In John s Gospel, the Last Supper begins with Jesus washing his disciples feet. Jesus then provides them with a series of instructions. Jesus instructs his disciples about the importance of following his example of love and service, about the gift they will receive when Jesus sends them the Holy Spirit, and about their relationship with Jesus and with the world. It concludes with Jesus prayer for his disciples. Today s Gospel reading is from middle of the Last Supper discourse. Jesus speaks about his relationship to his disciples. In his metaphor of the vine and the branches, Jesus is referencing the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Hebrew Scriptures, Israel is the vineyard, and God himself tends the vineyard. One of the primary themes is to show Jesus to be the fulfillment of God s promises to Israel. Jesus teaches his disciples that his relationship with them will not end after his death; he will remain with them always. This unity between Jesus and his disciples is the basis for their ability to continue to do the work that he began. Similarly, Jesus presence with us through the Gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to continue the work of love and reconciliation that he began. Just as Jesus will remain in the disciples, so too will his words. We come to know Jesus through the Scriptures, the living Word of God. Our commitment to be Christ s disciples is sustained through God s Word. This commitment is also strengthened by our life of prayer and nourished by the Eucharist. Through the Eucharist, Jesus dwells in us, remains with us, and transforms us so that we might bear fruit in his name. Both Christians and non- Christians alike act in ways that show their commitment to serve their neighbor. They feed the hungry, care for the sick, shelter the homeless, and give alms to the poor. These actions become acts of Christian discipleship when motivated by our relationship with Jesus. Jesus promises us that these actions will bear fruit when we undertake them in his name. 6 FACT SHEET (in response to your questions) Question: Why has the Diocese of San Jose introduced a new annual collection, the Diocesan Priests Retirement Collection on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday? Answer: The Diocese is beginning this collection in 2018 so that we can continue to care for our 44 retired priests and for the future care of those 99 priests who are currently serving our parishes and other diocesan assignments, and for the priests yet to be ordained who will serve us, our children and even our grandchildren. There is not yet a crisis in the fund, but with 45 priests reaching retirement age, 70 years old, in the next 15 years, and 15 in just the next five years, we will be at crisis stage unless we do something now. Explanation Since the Retirement Plan was established in 1988, there have been three recessions, including the most recent Great Recession of When we entered each of these periods, the funds that had been growing at expected rates stopped growing and even lost value. The same happened to many individuals retirement accounts. Our current expectation is for these investments to grow at about 6% per year. If this is too ambitious and if growth is less, there will be even more catch up to do. The Priest Retirement Board has addressed the shortfall and is committed to closing this gap by But it will take all of us working together. Being able to close this gap is built into the amount that is being charged for each non-retired priest. In the coming fiscal year, this will be $18,335 per priest, payable by the parish or the priest s source of income (for example, the Chancery). For a small parish, this amount can pose a great hardship; larger parishes, which may have three or four priests, can also be affected negatively by this. In 1988, the annual pension for a priest was $14,700. It is currently at $29,000. If the pension payments were tied to inflation, the annual pension for each retired priest would now be $30,940. Because our priests salaries have never been large by current standards, they will not benefit from large Social Security payments. The Good Shepherd Sunday second collection to benefit the Diocesan Priest Retirement Fund is aimed at closing the gap, so that what is promised our priests when they retire will actually be there for them in their last years.
