Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye. A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. Our gifts are to be given in gratitude for what God has entrusted to us. 4 Become a Cathedral Docent Did you know that our treasured Cathedral is a national registered landmark? If you would like to show visitors our beautiful Cathedral and teach them about our history, architecture and art, we seeking new volunteer docents to give guided tours. Training will be given about the cathedral s history, architecture and art and also on how to conduct tours. 5 Rincón Juvenil The third and final section of Luke s Sermon on the Plain begins: Jesus told his disciples a parable. There are actually four parables, three of which we read today. They are all about how to be a good disciple. The blind cannot lead the blind. And a disciple cannot be a good disciple unless he or she has learned from the teacher. Everyone who is fully trained is like the teacher who knows how to cure the blind. Before you can be a good disciple and teach others you must take care of yourself. Do not try to take a speck out of your brother s eye until you have taken the board out of your own. Finally, only when you have purified yourself can you produce the good works that the teacher requires. Discipleship asks us to produce good deeds. But to produce them requires the integrity and purity of heart found in the teacher. When people see your good deeds they will know that this is because you have a good heart. Children s Corner The final parable, which we do not read today, is about building on the solid foundation of rock and not on sand. Her family was poor, but their faith was strong. Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmations were a cause for great celebration. Ángela s mother encouraged the children to honor our Blessed Mother, Mary. The family prayed the Rosary together often. When she was 12, Ángela had to quit school to work in a shoe repair shop. Her boss, Antonia Maldonado, was also a faith-filled person. During breaks from work, the employees prayed together and listened to their employer read stories of the lives of the saints. Mrs. Maldonado saw that Ángela wanted to live a holy life. She introduced Ángela to Father Jose Torres Padilla, who became Ángela s spiritual director and helped her to grow in faith.. Angela s greatest desire was to become a nun, but her health was so frail that she was rejected by one order of nuns. She was accepted by another community but was not well enough to complete her training. She had to return home to work in the shoe shop. But through prayer and discussions with Father Torres, Ángela felt that God was calling her to make private vows and to serve the poor and dying. Soon other women joined her in her mission. They formed a contemplative religious order called the Sisters of the Company of the Cross. She died in 1932, but during Sister Ángela s lifetime, the order she founded grew to 25 convents. Their work continues today. St. Angela was canonized by Pope John Paul II on May 3, We celebrate St. Ángela s commitment to God. Her example teaches us to offer our gifts and talents to God and to trust that he will use them to make the world a better place. 5

You may access an overview of the Cathedral wedding policy on our website at Sacraments/Weddings Communion to the Sick If you know of a parishioner who is ill and homebound and unable to come to Mass, please call our parish office so that a minister of the Eucharist can take communion to them. Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism for infants and children under the age of 7 years is celebrated at the Cathedral monthly. An orientation to this sacrament of welcome and the role of parents and sponsors is a required aspect of the arrangements.
