2 Dear Lanes Chapel Family, You might remember that a few years ago I did a series of interview articles where I asked our staff members a series of question about themselves so that we, the congregation, could get to know them better. In keeping with that spirit, this month I am welcoming in our newest staff member, our Director of Choral Music, Mr. Kevin Pierce, with a similar feature article. We are blessed to have Kevin on staff and we look forward to many fruitful years of ministry together. I hope you enjoy. Blessings, Jeff In 150 words or less, tell us about yourself. I was born in OKC, OK but got to Texas as fast as possible. I grew up in Tyler, attended school in TISD from 4 th 12 th grade, and graduated from Robert E. Lee HS. In fifth grade, I fell in love with the French horn and joined the band immediately. By the eighth grade, I was purchasing and studying the scores to Beethoven s symphonies and waving around a makeshift baton created with a plastic medical pipet and Silly Putty. It seemed that band would be my entire life until I learned to sing in college. At the age of 21, I was forced by my Department Chair to join the University Singers at TAMU-Commerce which literally changed my life. It was the love of singing that brought me to Lanes Chapel as I began to search for God. I am now truly blessed to be in a position to enjoy my three greatest passions all at once: God, teaching, and music. Ten Questions: What is your long-term vision for our choral ministries at Lanes Chapel? To present quality sacred choral literature, and through its singing, lead the congregation worshipfully to the cross. With this goal firmly in mind, I would see the membership of the choir and the church membership grow through the enjoyment of singing. What is your favorite classical hymn? Praise to the Lord, the Almighty What is your favorite contemporary Christian song? Awakening - Chris Tomlin You are originally a band director by education and trade. I know as part of that training is that you must learn how to play every major instrument in the woodwind, brass, and percussion families. 1 What was the worst or hardest one to learn how to play? FLUTE!! UGH! I am sooooo bad at the flute. What was your favorite (apart from the French horn, your instrument of choice)? I really enjoyed learning the bassoon. I believe that if I d had an instrument that worked all the time, I might have become quite good at it. What is your favorite meal? My step-fathers BBQ Pork Ribs. Soooooooo good. Besides Megan, what three people would you like to have dinner with? (Living or dead, real or fictional) - Eric Whitacre, Gandalf the Grey, and Alton Brown What are 6 or 7 of your favorite stations on your Pandora station list? My current go-to is my Gaelic Storm station. Christmas Radio 80 s Pop Radio Epic Soundtracks Radio Classical Guitar Radio Chris Tomlin Radio Dinner Party Radio You ve been stranded on a desert island with a survival manual and a Bible. What are three other books you want to have with you and why? Flatland by Edwin Abbot - I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one, The Complete Works of Beethoven - That should me busy for a while, The Raft by Stephanie Stuve- Bodeen - I've never read it, but it sounds like it could come in handy. What movie to watch by yourself? Galaxy Quest any time, all the time With Megan? Whatever she wants so long as it doesn t have ooey-gooey emotions. If you could travel anywhere on an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere for two weeks, where would it be? I've always wanted to ride every rollercoaster east of the Mississippi River. I think I'll start in Atlanta, GA and end in Sandusky, OH... no Dramamine required. If you could have one super-power, what would it be and why? This may head into the realm of super-nerd, but I would want atomic transmutation. Imagine the good you could do by altering the atomic make-up of mud to make a fruit smoothie. It has potential!

3 Sunday School & Children s Church Sunday School: Children meet for Sunday School at 9:00 every Sunday morning. The theme for May is Jesus Prepares to Return to His Father. The key verse for the month is Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Then you will tell people about me. PK-5 th grades meet in room 109/110 for singing and the Bible lesson. Then children divide into smaller age-level groups to learn more about the Bible reading. We would like to invite all two and three year olds to Sunday School. We use Hands on Curriculum for this group. This is an engaging study for 2-3 year olds as they learn more about who Jesus is. Join us on Sunday mornings during the Sunday School hour. Children's Church for Pre-K and K meets following the Children's Sermon. Children and teachers gather in room 109 for their own worship service. The purpose of Children s Church is to prepare Pre -K and K children to take part in Sunday morning worship. The preparation this month will include learning the Apostle s Creed. Puppet Sunday May 8 th is PUPPET SUNDAY! Our puppet friends will have a special message for our Moms during children s sermon. Following the children s sermon, PreK and Kindergarten students will attend children s Church. Children may be picked up in the Family Life Center immediately after worship. Children of all ages may join us during this time. Wednesday Nights Children s Choir: 6:00-6:45. Grace Notes ages 3-5; Half Notes K-2 and Whole Notes Grades 3-5. Children s Choir will take a break after May 11. We will resume in the fall. ALL CHILDREN S CHOIRS WILL SING ON MOTHER S DAY, MAY 8 TH. Adventure Kids: 6:45-7:30. Bible study followed by games. MAY 24 TH will be our last Wednesday night until our Splish Splash Faith Blast on August 24. Thank you for all your support during the year!! Now is the time to begin finalizing plans for your students to be involved in the Lanes Chapel Student Ministry this summer. We have some sign-ups that have already started and it is important that you don t miss the deadlines because it might cause your student to miss out on some great opportunities. Wednesday Night Bible Study The month of May will wrap up our Wednesday night regular programming until school resumes in the fall. Our Wednesday nights in May will be an encouraging time for students as we focus on finishing the school year strong both spiritually and academically. Dinner is served each week a little before 6pm and the building will remain open until 7:30pm. Sunday School Our Sunday mornings are going great. We still have donuts, kolaches, and Yoo-hoo the 2 nd and 4 th Sunday of each month. We have an ever growing crew on Sunday Mornings. Make the commitment to get up a little earlier each Sunday so that your teenager can be a part of learning the foundations of the Bible alongside of other students their age. Lakeview Camp Signups Now is the time to sign-up for Lakeview. This year the cost is $300 and camp will be June 20 th -24 th. Lakeview Camp is for any student that will be entering the 5 th grade in the fall of 2016 to those that will have graduated in May of The camp is split up into 4 separate camps so students will grouped with other students that are the same age. Signups are done online. Head to -northwest-district-camp-2015 for more information. Information can also be obtained from the church office or by talking to Stephen. Scholarships are available, but are limited so please do not let money be the reason you do not send your student(s) to camp this summer. The deadline is June 3 rd. Summit Junior High Mission Project- Crockett, TX July 27 th -30 th Our Junior High Students will be heading back to Summit this summer. This time we will be in Crockett, TX from Wednesday July 27 th - Saturday July 30 th. The cost is only $100. To attend, students must have finished the 6 th, 7 th or 8 th grade this past school year. If you have completed your junior or senior year of High School and are interested in being a high school helper, please let Stephen know and he will give you the information. Sign-ups for Summit are also online this year. Click to register. Please register by May 9 th to guarantee your spot. Money will be collected at a later date. Could the Student Ministry be the Place for You? Our student ministry continues to grow. It is exciting to see all of the new faces that are a part of all of the things that we do. To help with growth of our ministry, we need some more help. Right now we are in need of someone to help with teaching on Sunday Mornings. 4 Just what IS a Sweet Hope Singer? A Sweet Hope Singer is anyone who loves to sing especially the old hymn tunes with a southern gospel flare or revival type songs of praise and worship. We sing of the sweet hope that we have through Jesus in a time when the world is losing hope. When does this group meet? Answer: The 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday of each month. I know you are busy... trust me so am I so we work diligently for about an hour twice each month. What time does the rehearsal take place? Answer: 6:00 PM 7:00 PM Where do they rehearse? Answer: in the choir rehearsal room. Who can participate? Answer: lovers of good music. WARNING: You might learn some music and have a good time! Carey Ponder, Director Chancel Choir Do you like to sing? Do you enjoy all kinds of music? Are you joyful? That s all that s required to join our Chancel Choir. We meet each Wednesday in the worship center from 7 to 8:00 p.m. We are currently working on music for summer and Freedom Sunday. Child care is available and your gift of song is needed. Come join us! Children s Choirs Children 3 years to 5 th grade meet in a graded choir program each Wednesday at 6 p.m. Children s choirs are currently preparing special music for Mother s day. Bring your child to sing praise to the King! Special Music If you know of a singing group or band that would like to share their music with us this summer, please Amber their name and contact information. 3 May 1st Pastor Jeff will continue his sermon series. We will share in the service of Holy Communion. Bring your family and join us for worship! May 8th - Mother's Day Bring your mother, wife, grandmother, favorite aunt, niece, daughter, granddaughter and sister to church with you today to celebrate the women in your life. Our children's choirs will sing. You won't want to miss this special day! May 15th Pastor Jeff will preach about the Holy Spirit. Let us fill the Worship Center with a recreation of the fire of Pentecost. Wear red, orange, or yellow to bring a fiery flare to our worship service! Come and be blessed as we delve deeper into God s word. May 22nd - Graduation Sunday We will honor our 2016 graduates this Sunday, Brooks Garner and Katie Gage. May 29th - Memorial Sunday The 29 th is Memorial Day Sunday. As part of our Memorial Day remembrances we will honor those in our congregation who served in our armed forces and also remember those who lost their lives in battle. We will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion as we remember what Christ has done for us. Join your church family as we take Communion together as well as with the saints who have gone on before us.

As a donor to this race, we are each playing a part in helping Susan G. Komen end breast cancer forever.
