2 Dear Lanes Chapel Family, Each day we are confronted by an increasing number of news reports from all over the world and even in our own country of terrorist attacks. Gunmen and suicide bombers wreak havoc on the lives of countless families and individuals by spreading death and destruction. Their worldview which is fueled by hate dictates that all of those who do not believe as they do and will not convert to their twisted way of thinking must be eradicated. These lunatics are hitting soft targets such as airport lobbies and nightclubs, and this is very scary for us all particularly our children. So what are we to do? How can we best help them in these troubling times? To find some help in this area, I will pass-on the advice of Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family. ********* In helping our kids, we must first remember that each child is different and they all have varying emotional needs. However, our response can be broken down into three basic age groups. For children through age 7 The first thing we must do for our children in terms of bad news is be the gatekeeper and defender. There are some things children do not need to know. They just need to be kids without the troubles of the world bombarding them. This might mean that we have to turn off the TV, radio, or computer when they are around to keep them from seeing the pictures & video and from hearing the reports. They do not need this news in their life. If they should see or hear these reports and ask about them, we must reassure them that as parents & grandparents we are with them. We are here to protect them. Most importantly, pray with them and remind them that we rest beneath the shelter of the wings of the Lord and He watches over us and protects us. For children age 7 to 12 This is the age when children are starting to truly grow into their emotional identity, so emotions run wild in their hearts and minds. When they encounter these news reports they may be stricken with great anxiety. They might feel helpless or overwhelmed with anger or fear. The challenge is that because they are still learning to deal with emotions, they might not know how to name those feelings. They just know something is not right on the inside; they just can t put a name on it. If that is the case for your child, help him or her by validating those feelings and say, It s okay to be upset. Things are scary right now, aren t they? Then discuss with them what is going on to help them understand their emotions. Along with this, live out your faith in front of them and involve them in your faith journey. Read scripture with them. Pray with them. As with the little ones, impress upon them that God and not the government is ultimately in control and that none of this happens without His watchful eye seeing it. No matter what, He still loves us. Teenagers At this age, they are starting to figure out the world, but they still need some help. So, at this age they can have a quasi-logical discussion about the issues and what is happening around us. Help them process their feelings and analyze the news with them from a Christian perspective. Listen to various news sources, if you like, to get different viewpoints. Investigate the story further to help them form an understanding of what is going on in the world around them. As with the younger ones, take them to scripture and pray with them. Assure them the Lord is still on His throne and He has given His power to no one. Lead them through this time with the assurance that you have your eyes on Christ and they should do the same. ********* Unfortunately, I don t know that this is going to get any better. In fact, I can see it getting worse. However, amidst it all, I know the Lord has not looked away. He does not drift off into little power naps. He does not sleep at night. He does not lose concentration. He is our shield, our shelter, our defender, and friend. He is with us, come what may. Through it all we must keep our eyes on Him. He is sovereign and we must keep our eyes, mind, and heart set upon Him. He will lead us through this time if we just keep looking to Him. I pray the Lord blesses us as we move into this future. I pray He will protect us all. I know He is in control and I trust Him with all that I have and all that I am. I pray you do, too. In Christ, Jeff 1

3 Summer is in full swing. June was a great month. We had a lot students come out for our Rough Riders Game trip, Lakeview Camp, and our Pool Party. Register at Please contact: viki@laneschapel.com with any questions Upcoming Summer Activities August 1-3, 6:00-7:30pm- Christmas Musical Workshop August 14th 5:30-7:30pm Laser Tag for 3rd grade and up August 24, 6:00-7:30pm- Splish Splash Faith Blast Sunday School & Children s Church Sunday School: PK-5: 9:00-9:50 This month we will continue our study of Joseph. Week 1-Joseph is sold into slavery; Week 2-Joseph interprets Pharaoh s Dream; Week 3-Joseph helps during the famine; Week 4-Joseph is revealed to his brothers. Children s Church: for Pre-K and K meets following the Children's Sermon. Children and teachers gather in room 109 for their own worship service. The purpose of Children s Church is to prepare Pre-K and K children to take part in Sunday morning worship. The preparation this month will include learning the Apostle s Creed Puppet Sunday Puppet Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of each month! Our puppet friends will be with us for the children s sermon during worship and again during children s church following the children s sermon. Children may be picked up in the Family Life Center immediately after worship. Children of all ages may join us during this time on puppet Sunday. Wednesday Nights Wednesday night activities will resume on August 24. Thank you for allowing our team time to plan for more great activities in the fall. Cave Quest VBS July Join in the VBS fun as we help the serve the children of our area. VBS is always a lot of fun and we always have a bunch of students help out. If you want to help talk to Stephen or Viki and we will make sure you have a great place to serve. Bowling July 19th We will be hitting the lanes and knocking down some pins on the afternoon of July 19 th. Look for more details in the bulletin and the student ministry website soon. Wednesday Night Bible Study We are still on hiatus until the start of the school year, but the Splish Splash Faith Blast on August 24 th will be here before long. It is a great way to help out our Children s Ministry, kick off the new school year, and beat the heat with some water fun. Sunday School Our Sunday mornings are going great. We still have donuts, kolaches, and Yoo-hoo the 2 nd and 4 th Sunday of each month. We have an ever growing crew on Sunday Mornings. Make the commitment to get up a little earlier each Sunday so that your teenager can be a part of learning the foundations of the Bible alongside of other students their age. Summit Junior High Mission Project-Lufkin, TX July 27 th -30 th Our Junior High Students will be heading back to Summit this summer. Our location has been changed from Crockett to Lufkin (which is a good thing). Everything else remains the same. We have a group of nine attending this year. Please keep us in your prayers as we serve the Lord in Lufkin. Could the Student Ministry be the Place for You? Our student ministry continues to grow. It is exciting to see all of the new faces that are a part of all of the things that we do. To help with growth of our ministry, we need some more help. Right now we are in need of someone to help with teaching on Sunday Mornings. 4 Hey, hey, hey Lanes Chapel!!! Welcome to the throws of summer! The stresses of the heat, the kids being out of school, events, and work can certainly be a pull, but I want to encourage you in how truly special and powerful you are. James 3:3-5, in the Passion translation, says, "Horses have bits and bridles in their mouths so that we can control and guide their large body. And the same with mighty ships, though they are massive and driven by fierce winds, yet they are steered by a tiny rudder at the direction of the person at the helm. And so the tongue is a small part of the body yet it carries great power!" We all have, what science calls, a voiceprint. Each of us create our own, God-designed frequencies with our voices. Much like a fingerprint, it is unique ONLY to you. It is the visual representation of the one-of-a-kind frequencies created by your voice, and no other man or woman who has ever lived has a voiceprint that looks like yours. We all have a destiny, a divine plan written in our book: "Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them."--psalm 139:16 If there are things we are all individually designed to do, and no one else in the world can create the frequencies you create, then there are keys hidden in your voice to doors that only YOU can unlock. We must open our mouths and release the praises buried within our hearts. We must declare with our voice the things of the Kingdom of God that need to be seen in the earth, so it can be "on earth as it is in Heaven". When you sing your songs of praise and worship you are moving and shaking things in Heaven that only YOU can move!! If you don't open you mouth, then things can not be moved!! You are powerful, you are divine, you are uniquely designed with your very own voiceprint. Let's all open our mouths together and bring Heaven to earth!! I Love You! We will begin rehearsals again the 3rd Tuesday in August. July 16th and 17th Hickory Hill weekend And VBS Sunday This weekend will be packed with fantastic blue grass music by Hickory Hill. Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Hickory Hill will host a concert in the worship center. Sunday morning during the worship hour, they will lead our music with their unique style and MC Mike Powell will bring The Word! Our Children will sing songs from VBS! Mark your calendars today! 3

Because of our success last year we have committed and are having a larger truck load (approx pumpkins), delivered on Saturday, October 1st at 12 noon. We will be starting organizational meetings in August for everyone to get involved; dates will be announced soon. Lets make our Second Annual Pumpkin Patch bigger and better than the first. WE CAN DO IT! ATTENTION: Volunteers for Operation Christmas Child We are having a CHRISTMAS IN JULY potluck lunch as well as a counting sorting organizing and FUN PARTY on Wednesday, July 20th from 9AM- NOON in our Family Life Center.
