The events of the past will be completely forgotten. 18 Be glad and rejoice forever in what I create. The new Jerusalem I make will be full of joy, and her people will be happy. 19 I myself will be filled with joy because of Jerusalem and her people. There will be no weeping there, no calling for help. 20 Babies will no longer die in infancy, and all people will live out their life span. Those who live to be a hundred will be considered young. To die before that would be a sign that I had punished them People will build houses and get to live in them they will not be used by someone else. They will plant vineyards and enjoy the wine it will not be drunk by others. Like trees, my people will live long lives. The Epistle Lesson 1 Thessalonians 5: There is no need to write you, friends, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. 3 When people say, Everything is quiet and safe, then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. 4 But you, friends, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief. 5 All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober. 7 It is at night when people sleep; it is at night when they get drunk. 8 But we belong to the day, and we should be sober. We must wear faith and love as a breastplate, and our hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 God did not choose us to suffer his anger, but to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us in order that we might live together with him, whether we are alive or dead when he comes. 11 And so encourage one another and help one another, just as you are now doing. Once there were ten young women who took their oil lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and the other five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any extra oil with them, 4 while the wise ones took containers full of oil for their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was late in coming, so they began to nod and fall asleep. 6 It was already midnight when the cry rang out, Here is the bridegroom! Come and meet him! 7 The ten young women woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 Then the foolish ones said to the wise ones, Let us have some of your oil, because our lamps are going out. 9 No, indeed, the wise ones answered, there is not enough for you and for us. Go to the store and buy some for yourselves. 10 So the foolish ones went off to buy some oil; and while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived. The five who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was closed. 11 Later the others arrived. Sir, sir! Let us in! they cried out. 12 Certainly not! I don't know you, the bridegroom answered. 13 And Jesus concluded, Watch out, then, because you do not know the day or the hour.

In the Lord s Supper we receive Christ s body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine (1 Corinthians 10:17, Because there is one bread, we who are many are one Body, for we all partake of the one bread. ). The blessings of the Lord s Supper are forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. If you believe as we do, but are not a member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, we ask that you speak to the Pastor before communing. The Children s Christmas Story will be presented on Sunday, December 16 at 10:15 a.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will be Monday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m. Christmas Day Worship Service will be Tuesday, December 25 at 10:15 a.m. Lectionary Summary: Isaiah 65:17 25, 1 Thessalonians 5:1 11, Matthew 25: By Faith We Are Prepared for Christ s Return - The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night (1 Thess. 5:1 11). The arrival of the bridegroom will be sudden and unexpected. Therefore you are to be watchful and ready like the five wise virgins. For you know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of Man is to return. (Matt. 25:1 13). The lamps are the Word of Christ. The oil in the lamps is the Holy Spirit, who works through the Word to create and sustain the flame of faith in Christ. The foolish are those who do not give proper attention to the working of the Holy Spirit in baptism, preaching, and the supper, and so their faith does not endure. The wise,

9 - 9 - however, are those who diligently attend to these gifts of the Spirit, and who therefore have an abundance of oil. The flame of faith endures to the end. By God s grace they are received into the eternal wedding feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, the new heavens and the new earth created by the Lord for the joy of His people (Is. 65:17 25). Stewardship Sentence: 1 Thess. 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. Our salvation is secure in Christ: He has done it all to save us. Therefore, our hope is secure and our faith in Him is certain. And what goes with faith and hope? Love. Our good works of love flow forth from the certainty of our faith. Our giving back to the Lord's work comes from what He has first given us. Joyfully Lutheran: Joy is heard - So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Rom. 10:17). God s Word engenders life. It kills to resurrect. We live in the joy and hope of the Gospel proclaimed. In the Absolution, life is spoken through the power of the Gospel to salvation to all who believe, and we respond with joy.
