1 St. Mary s Catholic School Friday Notes, October 13, 2017 Look for these Friday Notes on the school web site and in your as well Happy 100 th Anniversary of Fatima Miracle The students have had so much fun over the last month or so learning and reinforcing their knowledge about the miracles that occurred in Fatima, Portugal and practicing apparitions with their Mary flashlights. Today, just before Mass, students received Miraculous Medals blessed by Bishop Conley. Then, after Mass, Fr. Holdren brought the Blessed Sacrament from the Adoration Chapel and led the prayer to consecrate St. Mary s School to Our Lady Seat of Wisdom while the students sat in Adoration. As they exited the church, students had an opportunity to venerate relics of Francisco and Jacinta (courtesy of Sr. Frances). Here are a few of the main points we have been discussing with the students. 1. Jesus worked through his Mother, Mary and 3 small children (about their age!) to share this beautiful message with the world. 2. The message was simple and repeated each month for 6 months: Pray the rosary daily. It is a challenge, but even a decade is a great start! May you enjoy this beautiful event with your family and take this opportunity to try out a new rosary devotion together. God Bless. Basil/Gregory Nazianzen (gr. 3-5) Challenge: Find a way to be a better friend to classmates (holy competition) Western Book Fair Schedule: Oct 16-24: 9 AM-8 PM except 10/20 (5-7 PM) * Oct. 17, 6:30-7:30 PM Story Time and Western Songs with Sr. Ann Marie on guitar (and cookies!) Thank you! to the David City Fireman for teaching our students about fire safety (see pictures). Prayers for new baby Clayton Meister! Oct : Parent-Teacher Conferences See enclosed letter for your time slot. Oct. 19: Bank of the Valley deposit before school can join in any time, parents must sign form. Oct. 20: NO SCHOOL Fall Break Oct. 27: Baptism Mass/Spirit Day Oct. 30: Trunk or Treat. Start planning your trunk!! Teachers will have one tough competition. Oct. 31: All Saints Dress-Up Day. Can dress as a Saint or an angel. Ideas on Pinterest or CatholicIcing.com. Consider Fatima children?? * Oct. 23, 4-8 PM Grands Night. Any grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend can bring students by to shop and enjoy a treat and take a western photo. Coin War for Hurricane Victims. We will continue collecting donations through Oct. Students can bring in spare change to their classrooms and we will send it on to Catholic Relief Services for help victims in Texas in Florida. Wondering Will says: Some Church customs like the use of medals, relics, and scapulars seem superstitious. Confident Carlos replies: These objects -- known as sacramentals-- can help us to be more open to receiving God's grace, especially through the sacraments. In the Bible, we find many examples of God using sacred objects to grant blessings. "And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them." (Acts 19:11) God often builds up the "supernatural" through the use of the "natural." Even so, people do sometimes use sacramentals in superstitious ways. This is wrong and can be avoided by learning the story behind a particular sacramental and using it properly. 5 Pictures from this week Fire Safety Presentation, David City Firefighters on Tue. First they explained their safety suits, then students got to walk by and touch them and ask questions. It is pretty clear that they enjoyed it! Make sure to take your kids to the Fire Station Open House on Sunday from 11-2 to win a trip to school in the fire truck!
