1 Wesley United Methodist Church Wesley Herald November 2017 A Word from Pastor Heather As we get to these last two months of the year, everything centers around holidays. November is the month of Thanksgiving, filled with visions of the great feast with all the trimmings. We remember that central theme of being thankful as we sit down to eat with family and friends. Perhaps we even go around the table to ask what everyone is thankful for this year. It is the holiday that for us focuses us in on our gratitude for all that we have, and encourages us to help others who are in need. This year I want to encourage you to expand that feeling about gratitude throughout the entire month. I encourage you to participate in two church-wide activities to help us to remember to be grateful each day. First, I will be making available a calendar for the month of November, and on each day there will be prompts to think about different things for which you are grateful. I encourage you to take the calendar and write down one thing each day as a daily gratitude. If you are up for the challenge, I invite you to take a photo each day of something that represents your daily gratitude. On Sunday, December 3, we will gather for a conversation about our month during fellowship time. I encourage you to think about different ways that your life has been touched, and all the ways that you might be able to touch the lives of others. We spend a lot of our time focusing on what needs to be changed, or what is wrong with our lives or others. I invite you to take this month to surround yourself with gratitude, and see how that affects your mood and your life. Come and take the challenge with me! 1 In Christ, Pastor Heather

5 United Methodist Women Thank you to those who brought in items for the Christmas Stockings which we will be filling for the Family Promise family holiday party. Also, thanks to those who attended the Fun and Fellowship Event Wrapping Party meeting in October. Our Stocking Secrets Fair being held on Saturday, November 18, will soon be here. We are going "full steam ahead" as we scurry to buy supplies, bake pies, make candy, bake cookies, finish boutique items, fill gift baskets, search through closets and basements for the Country Store, and prepare to decorate! If there is anything you can make or contribute, or any help you can give, please get in touch with Sherry Anne Bryant ( ) or at Although there is still much to do, we will be ready for the Stocking Secrets Fair on November 18, thanks to the help our church family members & our friends give us. The United Methodist Women is a MISSION organization, and all proceeds from the Fair go to support our long list of local, national, and global projects as well as special one-time gifts to programs all aiding women, children, and youth, and to the mission work of the UM Church. You can see how we spend the dollars by examining our budget for 2018, which will be published next month in our program booklet. We thank each and every one of you for your help with our Fair! YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Candy/fudge making - Make at home this year measure, mix, stir, beat, butter, spread in your own kitchen and bring in on Friday, November 17, or Saturday morning, November 18. Be sure to label with the flavor, plus nuts, peanut butter, coconut, or other ingredients that might trigger allergies. See Jean Snow with questions. Christmas craft/decorations workshop - Tuesdays, at 9:30 am, at Shirley Lowe's, 2 Laurie Lane, Natick. It's not too late to join in. Any amount of experience welcome. Learn on the job! Have fun! A few sessions remain. Chapel/Library set-up - Sunday, November 12, right after coffee hour. Strong muscles are needed to move the library desk, put library furniture in hallway, stack red chairs in end of chapel, move chapel furniture, carry dining table from parlor to chapel, carry and set up long tables, and carry stored boxes from upstairs eave storage to the chapel. 1:30 pm into the afternoon--- cover tables in chapel and library. Country Store - sorting and pricing during the weeks between November 1 and 16 --morning, afternoon, and evening in Fellowship Hall. No prior experience needed. Many hands wanted to lighten the work load. Contact Sherry Anne and let her know when you can help. Need helpers to move all the stuff and set-up in the nursery school rooms in the east wing around 2 pm on Thursday, November 16. 5
6 UMW Continued Decorating Fellowship Hall - week of November 13 to15..monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at 2 pm, and again on Thursday morning throughout the day. Friday helpers needed to finish covering tables, set up cafe, hang signs, display boutique items, sort lobster, make pumpkin pies, etc. See Sherry Anne to let her know when you can help. Clean Up - Sat, November 18, at the close of the fair, from 2:30 to 4:30 AND Good, clean, saleable items and used toys for the Country Store. NO TV'S, NO COMPUTERS, MONITORS, or KEY- BOARDS; NO LARGE FURNITURE or APPLIANCES, NO BOOKS, CLOTHING, or PLANTS. Items may be left on the stage beginning November 1st. Put all saleable items neatly behind the curtain on the stage in Fellowship Hall. If you have an idea of the price to be charged for each item, please mark the items. Only you know what you paid for the items, and it might speed up the pricing work on the days before the Fair. Jewelry and collectibles items should be brought to the Church Office between NOW and Sunday, November 12. Gift baskets you are filling should be left in the CUMC kitchen no later than Sunday, November 12, so that Ginger can cover them with cellophane. Include the special "Christmas Carousel" tag (available on "The Table" in Fellowship Hall) neatly listing the theme of the basket, the items in the basket, the total value of the items, and your suggested selling price. She will attach the tag and bow after wrapping. Small cookies for the Cookie Corner and baked goods for the Bake Shop may be brought in Friday, November 17, or very early Saturday morning, November 18. Please label the names of the cookies and baked goods, and include ingredients like nuts, peanut butter, coconut, etc., that trigger allergies. Suggested prices would be appreciated, too, for baked goods. It would be helpful if we knew that you were baking for us so that we can plan on quantities and display space. Please tell us by using one of the Stocking Secrets sign-up sheets or contacting Helen Barber for the Bake Shop and Dominique Winn for the Cookie Corner. 6
7 Continued UMW Boutique and craft items that you are making should be brought in by Friday, November 17, at the latest. Please attach a recommended price to be charged for each item.
