Rolly Cast Into the Deep It s Christmas Time In all my 27 years as a priest, I calculate that I may have baptized 2,100 infants. And most often, as I pour baptismal water over the heads of infants, they begin to cry. Once in a rare while, I see a smile. Nothing warms and cheers a tired soul more than an infant s smile, whether it s a real smile or a mere reflex. When I think of infants, I see them as fragile masterpieces of God. They look defenseless, helpless, totally dependent on adults for food, for protection, sustenance and life. Yet, I have heard it time and again that once a child is born, the household revolves around this little bundle of joy. Everyone s schedule, movements, noise level and sleep patterns are affected greatly by the baby in the house. A child so simple, so uncomplicated can truly complicate people s lives. They always seem to be on the receiving end of things. Yet the truth of the matter is that much can be received from children. There are mothers I know who care for their children and breast-feed all day and night and have a certain glow. Never mind if they do not get enough sleep or lack time for themselves. The fact is, caring for their babies gives them a certain satisfaction that is reflected in their eyes and faces. We sometimes only see children as the recipients of the fruits of our years of knowledge and experience. We fail to recognize that they teach us humility, simplicity, perseverance, patience and generosity. That makes them our teachers. One such child who came so quietly and almost obscurely is the child born to a woman named Mary. He was born in a manger amidst animals and their stench. Far from pleasant and definitely, no mother in her right mind would wish this on herself. But the one child that was to change the world was born under these circumstances. The child that baffled readers and revolutionized society came not just to give and to teach. He came to heal and to cause some amount of disorder to bring things in their proper order. He came to eradicate hatred, sow love, bring healing to the outcast, elevate the status of women and motherhood. He came in poverty to teach us to fill our lives only with what is essential. He came in the night to bring light to our darkness. He came to human parents to teach us to value family and that he is in the midst of all families who accept Him. He came as a child so we can hold him closest to our hearts. His coming as a child evoked in us tenderness, compassion, loving care and service. He was not an ordinary child. What child then is this? Hail, He is Christ the King!

4 December 25, 2016 Our Lady of Lourdes Page Three Loves fills us with light El amor nos llena de luz L amore ci riempie di luce 사랑은빛으로우리를채워준다 Miłość napełnia nas światłem O amor nos preenche de luz Every day, I receive via a Word of the Day although in truth, more often than not, it really is a phrase or a brief sentence. Its message is always a creative way that we can love God and love our neighbor. Recently, the Word of the Day was Love fills us with Light. It started me thinking and reflecting on what that truly means and what it could mean in my life. Very often when we do a good deed especially when it is done out of love we feel light-hearted and joyful. Is this the light this phrase is talking about? The lightness in one s heart? A light that brings joy? Or what about the time that I listened intently to a friend who was troubled and did not know what to do. I shooed away every temptation to interrupt prematurely with solutions. Instead I made sure that I was completely there for her, actively listening. In the end, I did not even have to offer solutions. By the time she finished telling me about her problem she knew what to do. The light came on in the background of love. Is it this then? Is this the light-- the inspiration that comes from giving and receiving love? As I go about my day, smiling at each person I meet, picking up the paper that didn t quite make it into the trash can, bringing a glass of water to a thirsty friend, writing a check to pay the Gas Company, kneeling in Church in prayer, if I do these things out of love, at the end of the day I feel that I have walked with Jesus in each moment. Jesus the light of the world! I d have to say, all of the above. Love fill us with light. Loving others fills us with a light heart. Loving selflessly fills us with the light of the Holy Spirit. Loving in each moment, in each action fills us with the presence of Jesus, the light of the world. Today is Christmas. Today is born our savior and we welcome Him into our hearts. We can keep Him in our hearts when we love in every moment, in every thought, word or deed. Then, indeed, every day will be Christmas. Merry Christmas! Christmas Day First Reading: Isaiah 52:7-10 Second Reading: Hebrew 1:1-6 Gospel: John 1:1-18 Merry Christmas to all of you. Christmas offers all of us an opportunity to recapture glimpses of childhood s sacred memories. Looking at the crib that adorns our church every Christmas instills in me that sense of timelessness as we come face to face with the truth that God came down from heaven as a helpless infant. It s a mystery that stretches our minds beyond their limits moving us towards that horizon where time touches eternity. This is what Christmas is all about: God has come down to earth to us. It s the simplicity of this happening that captures the imagination. Christmas is more than a story that is told it s about a birth that brings heaven right down to earth. The new born child is our living link to God. Love came down at Christmas, crossed an unimaginable border and personally entered our world. We are amazed that God should come among us in such humble circumstances. The first reading at midnight mass opens with these words of Isaiah: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows but now, light is shining on them. And the gospel reading of today s mass speaks of Jesus as the real light... that comes... and shines on all. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out. And so, more than 2,000 years ago, like a great star, Jesus came down from heaven and lit up the darkness of the world. God loves us so much that he sent his only Son among us to save us, to forgive our sins and to show us the way to our real homeland in heaven. In compassion, he broke down the sacred barrier between creature and creator, reaching down and presenting himself to us as a child, inspiring love rather than fear. Christmas focuses not only on what Jesus did by making his home with us, but on what we must do, as it reveals that we are part of God s family. That means, we have one father and all of us are brothers and sisters on our pilgrim way to our heavenly homeland. The consequences to our daily living are truly enormous. To neglect the old, to be contemptuous of the poor, to have no thought for the lonely, is to ignore those individuals with whom Christ has closely identified when he was born in a manger, visited by the shepherds and heralded by the angels. We all need to examine ourselves and look at the doors that we close to Jesus as they did to Mary and Joseph at the inn. There is no need to be sentimental about the doors being slammed in the inn when there is no room in our hearts for the needy for the happiness of Christmas comes from within, when God is born in the stable of our hearts. If Jesus is to be born into today s world, it must be through us. We must now be the beam of light in the midst of darkness. We must be the ray of hope in the midst of despair. Many of us are disappointed because in our search, we tend to look for God in the spectacular, but the Christmas story tells us that God is to be found right before our eyes in the ordinariness of human life, in the people and the situations that we take for granted. Above all, we can experience his presence in our hearts, provided we make room for him by removing the barriers and obstacles that get in his way. God often visits us but most of the time, we are not at home.

5 December 25, 2016 EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY They share in the work of the Lord s Spirit who makes us one bread, one body, the cup of blessing. They work in ministering Christ s body and blood to the body of Christ, the Church. The administration of Holy Communion to the people of God is a very special ministry. It is a ministry of witnessing to faith in the real presence of Christ, in the action of sharing Eucharistic meal of Christ s sacrifice. Eucharistic Ministry in our parish consists of approximately 100 plus parishioners. Ministers must be approved and confirmed by the Pastor. They must be practicing Catholics, baptized and confirmed and married in the Catholic Church they must be at least 18 years old or for the youth ministry, 16 years old. If you have a deep devotion to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, this Ministry may be what God is calling you to do. If you wish additional information in joining this Ministry you may contact Jackie Pensanti at First Christmas celebration Christmas was first celebrated as a religious even on December 25 in 352 A.D. Nobody know the exact date when or in what year Jesus was born. And it didn t really matter back in those first centuries. Birthday were less important than remembering the day when someone died. In fact, early Christians often celebrated the birth of Jesus on January 6. During the second century, five dates in three different months (including December 25) were considered as possible birth dates for Jesus. Finally, in the fourth century, Pope Julius I and other Church leaders specified December 25 as the official date for the birth of Jesus to replace the Roman holiday celebrating the birthday of the Sun God, and the return of longer days of sunlight. I finally decided that every idea we had (for the show) was an idea that really avoided the essential truth. That the true meaning of Christmas would be found only in the Gospel according to St. Luke. Charles Schultz Peanuts and St. Luke In 1965, cartoonist Charles Schulz agreed to do a TV Christmas show based on his Peanuts Comic strip. But he had a few stipulations: Children (not adults) would be the voices of Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, and the other characters; there s to be no laugh track; and St Luke s scriptural passage about Jesus birth would be included in the script. Schulz specifically wanted Luke 2:8-14 to be included in the broadcast because that passage is what Christmas is all about, he stressed. A Charlie Brown Christmas debuted that December. In the plot, Charlie Brown tries to find the true meaning of Christmas. Linus recounts the story of the birth of Jesus, reciting Schulz s favorite verses from Luke s infancy narrative. We have two electric wall panels that hold 128 candle, 64 candles on each side of the Blessed Mary grotto a the back entrance of our Church. Each candle is made of real wax with electrified illumination to ensure your memorial candle burns brightly all day and all night. A small plaque will be mounted before each candle.
