3 Cast Into the Deep Honor Your Father and Your Mother Fr. Rolly Astudillo Holy Scriptures tell us: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you (Exodus 20:12) This is a family value that is timeless. It has been said that a family can survive without a nation, but a nation cannot survive without the family. God established the family by bringing a man and a woman together in marriage. Then comes the children and grandchildren. I m reminded of this story. There was this little girl sitting on her grandfather s lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. The little girl was alternately stroking her own cheek, then her grandpa s cheek again. Finally, she spoke up, Grandpa, did God make you? Yes, sweetheart, he answered, God made me a long time ago. Oh, she paused, Grandpa, did God make me, too? Yes, indeed, honey, he said, God made you just a little while ago. After feeling her grandpa s face and her own face, she blurted out, God s getting better at it, isn t he? In these days, we see around us a big problem: the neglect of older people by their children and grandchildren. We should not deny the fact, however, that there are sons and daughters who keep a caring eye on mom and dad especially when they are sick or on their death bed. During my visits to the dying in hospitals or in their own homes I see with my own eyes the many families gathered around their parents showing their love and care until the end. But, at the same time, there are those moms and dads in care homes who have had no visits from their offspring for months and months, not even during Christmas or on their birthdays. This is something that is very sad. As longevity increases due to advances in medicine, the problem of caring for the elderly becomes more acute. In an economically advanced society where everyone lives busy lives, less time or no time is spent with parents. God s Fatherhood is where human fatherhood comes from. This is the foundation of the honor we owe to our parents. Whether we are minors or adults, our respect for mom and dad will always be nourished by their love for us. Hence, filial piety, which best describes our relationship with our parents, derives from our gratitude for the gift of life we received from them, their love and their work which brought us into the world and enabled us to grow in stature, wisdom and grace. Let us not forget the labor pains of our mom who gave birth to us. It is through our parents that we are born so what can we give them back that is equal to their gift to us? For as long as a child lives at home, that child must obey his parents in all that they ask of him or her for it is for his or her own good and that of the family. My son, keep your father s commandment, and forsake not your mother s teaching.... When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will talk with you. (Proverbs 6:20-22) A wise son hears his father s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1) Honoring one s parents brings joy to the family. And since it is a commandment from God, not to honor them is a grievous offense. Coming Together Christmas Baskets Drive As we look ahead to the Christmas season, we are mindful that there are those who are much less fortunate than we are. We are looking forward to providing baskets to 40 families in our community. We know that you will want to help us with this mission. This is a joint effort of Our Lady of Lourdes School Community and the Parishioners. 4 Feast of Christ the King First Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-12,15-17 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:20-26,28 Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46 About five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians: the wonderful Temple was torn down, the wall around Jerusalem was razed to the ground, the Babylonian soldiers had gone on a rampage indulging in every type of violence and cruelty. Many fled for safety, hiding in caves or fleeing into Egypt while the rest were held captives and deported as slaves. Only some very poor peasants and vinedressers were left behind. Then soon, the inhabitants of Palestine were divided into two groups: the poor ones and the shrewd ones who took advantage of the misfortune of others to become rich. It is in this context that the prophet Ezekiel utters the prophecy we read today in the first reading: Israel has become a scattered flock without a shepherd and so a message of salvation is now being proclaimed. God will no longer send them kings as shepherds but He himself will shepherd Israel, gathering them from places where they have been scattered and will lead them to grazing grounds on the mountains of Israel. Addressing His flock, God says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and set apart rams from goats. And what is the distinction that God will use in separating one sheep from another, from rams and goats? The answer is in the Gospel reading: It s about Love for Mankind. As a people who share in the dignity of Christ, the Shepherd-King, we also share in governing and shepherding to alleviate certain situations of suffering and poverty: Hunger, thirst, exile, nakedness, disease and prison. When I was hungry, you fed me; thirsty, you gave me drink and we call them the Acts of Mercy. Jesus tells us that all our religion is summed up in the diligence and zeal with which we fight against these inhuman situations. On this Feast of Christ the King, we are presented with concrete ways of shepherding love. This is not to show what will happen at the end of the world but to teach us what really counts in the life of any person. For at life s end, what really matters are not success and fame, but the love one has shown to one s brother or sister. Everyone, from the ancient times to the present, knows who should be helped: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, the prisoner. The new thing is that Jesus identifies himself with these needy people: Whatever you did to one of these little ones, you did it to me. Continued Continued What can we say then of those who do not claim to be Christians yet practice charity, love of neighbor and work for the realization of the same thing that we Christians work for the realization of the Kingdom of God? All of them, even if unaware, are authentic Christians. And we hear of the judgment of the King against those who have gone wrong: And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. And so, we ask: Who will be considered a sheep and who a goat at the end of time? All of us are at times sheep and at other times, goats. We are like sheep when we love and goats when we behave selfishly. Being so, we always pray that the Lord, after allowing us to jump right and left like sheep and goats, will, in his merciful and gratuitous love, find a way of turning us all into his own sheep. By our love for one another will the world see the image of Christ, the Shepherd-King, in us. We have so much to be thankful for in this wonderful parish community. Special thanks are due to the many people who made our parish Thanksgiving Dinner so wonderful. Thank you to the set-up crew, the fetchers and carriers, the ironers, the decorators, the cooks, carvers, and servers, and the clean-up crew. Thank you all for your generous hearts and helping hands. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Centennial Survey. We are now in the process of tabulating the responses. An early statistic indicated that 35% wanted more bible study. We are happy to announce that starting on Monday, November 27th, at 7:00 pm, OLL will be hosting a 10-week bible study class on the Gospel of Matthew. It will be held in the Parish Hall. Chris Plance, who will be leading our study, is a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes class of 2004.

From the pasture In this season of Thanksgiving and good will toward all, the pasture would like to thank everyone who has generously contributed to our efforts this past year and especially in our matching funds campaign this fall, where the Sunland-Tujunga Elks donated $1,500 because YOU helped us meet and exceed (significantly) that goal! It is our hope to include a token of the real meaning of Christmas (Christ s birth) this year when we gather for our special pasture day on December 16. YOU have made it possible to allow just a little more light to shine for so many this Christmas season. It is the failure to meet a child s basic needs, including housing, food, clothing, education, safety and access to health care. Neglect is most often characterized by acts of omission that aren t easy to see. The signs of neglect are wide and varied, and may include: failure to develop and grow appropriately, or malnourishment, among infants; wearing inadequate clothing for the weather; and children who seem to be wholly responsible for the welfare of their siblings. If you know that any type of abuse is occurring, or if a child discloses to you, it is important to communicate these concerns to the appropriate authorities. Call your local law enforcement or child protective services department to report suspected abuse of any kind.
