1 CHURCH OF THE ADVENT moves to Green Acres Sunday morning service on May 21 will move to the outdoor Amphitheater at the Green Acres Campground as part of the worship schedule for the campers. The service of Holy Eucharist begins at Volume 44, Issue 10 11:00 a. m. Celebrant will be The Reverend Canon Ted Malone, cousin of Janice Malone Greene. In case of rain, the service will move indoors to the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse is the place for a potluck picnic at noon. Picnickers need to be sure to bring utensils for their favorite dishes as there is no kitchen in the Clubhouse. Tea and paperware and eating utensils are provided by Green Acres. Owners and operators as well as parishioners Bobby and Janice Greene extend a cordial and open invitation to the parish family to spend the afternoon enjoying the various activities offered by the campground. Parishioners need to be sure to identify themselves as members of the Church of the Advent to the staff when using the facilities. Green Acres is located six miles south of Williamston off of Highway 17. Our parish high school graduate will be honored at the outdoor service on May 21. Graduating from Bear Grass Charter School is Christopher Bosso He will be remembered by the Church of the Advent with an inscribed Bible. We will also honored Cayce French, who is receiving her Masters degree from Clemson. She will be remembered with copy of Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World by Henri Nouwen. Acolytes enjoy first time at Festival Thank you to Regina French who accompanied four of our acolytes to the 8th Annual Acolyte Festival held at Nags Head during the weekend of March Here is her report: In March I had the pleasure to accompany four of our acolytes Adison, Khalil, Khira and Standrick to the 8th Annual Acolyte Festival held at St. Andrew's by the Sea in Nags Head. While we didn't learn a great deal about the formalities of being an acolyte, we did make new friends and have the opportunity to worship as a group with six other churches in our diocese. All four acolytes have made it known they wish to go back next year. Page 2 When you have an opportunity, take a moment to ask one of the participants what they enjoyed the most; I'm sure you will get a variety of answers. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the vestry and ECW for sponsoring us and supporting us on this adventure. A special thanks also goes out to Kit, Lucia and Frankie for providing us some goodies to get us through the midnight munchies. Let me also say how very proud I am of the service each of the acolytes provided during our Easter Service and most recently during the 100th Celebration. They served with such reverence that it brought tears to my eyes. We certainly still have a lot to learn and there will always be room for improvement but I am so appreciative of each acolyte's willingness to serve this church and our Lord. Regina French And a special, special thank you to Regina for mentoring our acolytes. And I did ask the kids about their experiences and they all were very positive and eagerly looking forward to the next time! It is time to sign up for Parish Family Weekend July 14-July 16. The sign-up sheet is posted in the church narthex. $80.00 per person, per night for double $ per person, per night for single $29.00 per person (5-17 year old) per night $12.00 per person (1-4 years old) per night

2 Page 3 Page 4 Beginning on Sunday, June 4, the morning service will begin at 10 a. m. and continue through August. New schedule for UTO Parish United Thank Offering (UTO) Chair Frankie Biggs announces a change in the schedule for the in-gatherings. Traditionally, there are two in-gatherings spring and fall. This year the UTO Offerings should be a Sunday close to the June 4 and November 5. This year Frankie is announcing just one in-gathering for the fall. She will look at the response to see if there is a need to return to two in-gatherings. This was an idea suggested by the Diocesan UTO Chair in an attempt to keep churches from feeling drained by multiple in-gatherings. May 10th Service at 6:00 p. m. Spaghetti and Salad Supper at 6:30 p. m. The monthly services are now held on the second Wednesday of the month. Mary Anne Crowe is in need of a few parish cooks to help with the menu of spaghetti, salad, bread, and dessert. Please call her at if you can help. Thank you, Mary Anne Crowe, of Pastoral Care for organizing the meals. Attends board meeting Kit Reddick, attended the Diocesan ECW Board Meeting and Annual Meeting in New Bern on May 2 and 3. In her capacity as Chair of Mission and Outreach, she sent out a call for a collection for the Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington for shaving cream, cough drops, reading glasses. Attendees at the Annual Meeting filled up eight large tote bags with their offerings. Thank you to those at Church of the Advent who sent your offerings with Kit to the meeting. While at the meeting, Kit heard news that the Right Reverend Dan Daniels is now the interim dean at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. These twenty-two parishioners (including Doug Chesson, the photographer, attended a special Evening Prayer service held on Wednesday, April 28 to commemorate the 100th year of the consecration of the on April 28, Kit Reddick led the liturgy using the 1892 Book of Common Prayer, 1914 Book of Services, and the King James Version, all in use at that time. Using an article from The Enterprise researched by Frankie Biggs, Kit gave details of the original consecration service. She also spoke of the power of the gift of the church from Fannie Chase Staton, a woman in the Episcopal Church at a time when women did not serve in roles of leadership in the church nor have the right to vote in their country. She also spoke of the changes made in the Episcopal Church during the past 100 years to include women more fully in the church. 3 Page 5 According to The Enterprise, during the Sunday service following the consecration of the church, several memorials were blessed. The silver alms basins were given by Charles H. Godwin, grandfather of Beverly Mills and Lou Celebrezze, in memory of his wife Louisa Staton Godwin. The brass receiving basin was given in memory of Ella Grist Staton, Beverly and Lou s great-aunt, by James Grist Staton, and the brass missal stand (referenced in The Enterprise article as an altar desk) in memory of the late Rt. Rev. Robert Strange by Mrs. James Grist Staton. Also blessed was an individual communion set used to administer communion to the sick and the shut-in that is still used today. Next month, the will publish more news of the 100th celebration. Do you have any photographs to share? Please send to Parish Administrator Joe Jernigan. Also, Joe is working on a more comprehensive history of the church. He would appreciate any in=put or suggestions or materials. May is CPC month at The vestry has designated the month of May as Church Periodical Club Month at the. Offering envelopes have been mailed out to be used any Sunday in May. Also, the loose offering will go to our collection. If you need an envelope, please see Kit Reddick. So, what is Church Periodical Club (CPC)? CPC is a ministry of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW). The CPC was founded in 1888 by Mary Ann Fargo and a small group of women from an Episcopal Church in New York City who used the Wells Fargo stage coach line to send bundles of church periodicals, prayer books, and Bibles to clergy and laity, missionaries and Indians in the Dakotas in the far west. As an independent organization affiliated with the Episcopal Church, the CPC relies on its volunteers, clergy, and friends to promote its Ministry of the Printed Word. Monies collected in our parish are submitted to the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women, who in turn use it as scholarships for diocesan seminarians to assist them in buying books. Monies are also submitted to the National CPC to be used for grants. One of the scholarship recipients is our own Stephen Batten, who has received $ scholarships at Diocesan Convention for two years. Page 6 Request for 2018 UTO Prayer Booklet From Sandra Squires, UTO Board President As you may know, every three years, the United Thank Offering gathers original prayers from around the Episcopal Church to create a pocket book of prayers that is available at General Convention. Last Convention, we were able to collect 125 prayers of gratitude in honor of 125 years of the United Thank Offering. This year, we are hoping to collect original prayers from nine categories: gratitude, guidance, fear/danger, forgiveness, healing, loneliness, crisis/ dealing with disappointment or crisis, love of God, and other. Children, women, men, clergy, seminarians, or groups may write prayers for this edition of the booklet. We welcome prayers from every diocese and province of the Episcopal Church. Prayers can be submitted in any language and in any format collect, litany, free form, or prose. We encourage you to listen to the Holy Spirit and write a prayer to be used throughout the Church by individuals, for the opening or closing of meetings, or in a variety of settings. Please submit all prayers by July 1, All prayers must be submitted using this link uto_book_of_prayers

4 From Our Mailbox Dear Church Members, The Bonner family would like to give many thanks to the church for the wonderful food delivered to us Sunday. It was great not to have to cook a meal. It was thoughtful of the church members to do this wonderful act of love and kindness. We certainly did enjoy all of the food. Bless our church and members. Please continue to pray for the Bonner family. It would be greatly appreciated if you would keep Robert Jr. on the Prayer List. Love in Christ, The Bonner Family A blessed Eastertide to all; Some news for the parish: I was offered and I have accepted an eight week summer internship at All Saints Southern Shores under the supervision of Father Tom Wilson. This covers my June and July and I will return to VTS on August 3 to take up my duties as a residence hall proctor in Moore Hall. There is a slight chance I'll take Hebrew during the fall term. Updates to follow. Kindest regards Stephen J. Batten Postulant, Diocese of East Carolina Student Government Chancellor Virginia Theological Seminary (MDiv 2018) Page 7 Our daughter, Cayce French, will graduate on May 12th from Clemson University with her Masters of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Non-Profit. Unfortunately, she will not be able to be at Green Acres for the service or the picnic but her father and I will be there to represent her! She has passed her Comprehensive Exam with flying colors. Regina and Eric French The Prayer List is found on a notebook marked Prayer Lists found on the table in the vestibule of the church. Names may be added at any time by writing them in the notebook or calling the church office. The Prayer List is read weekly at Sunday services.
