1 3 DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE 1. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one is a portion of the disciple s prayer pattern, more commonly called, The Lord s Prayer. This pattern can be found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4 and deals with five areas of prayer: praise (vs. 9), priorities (vs. 10), provision (vs. 11), pardon (vs. 12) and power (vs. 13). The phrase that pertains to spiritual warfare is verse 13 but addresses it from a very different point of view. 2. As briefly mentioned in the previous lesson, areas of sin are areas where the devil has authority. When we are unwilling to acknowledge sin, God is faithful to allow us to be led into temptation so that we can confess that sin to God and be cleansed. A. The terrible result of Achan s sin in Joshua 7 Now Joshua said to Achan, My son, I beg you, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me. B. Proverbs 28:13 He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. C. 1 John 1:6-8...If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth... If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. TEMPTATION AND FORGIVENESS The Velcro principle in James 1:13-15 When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted (enticed) when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. THE STRATEGY 1. Tempted (enticed) means to a hook. A. Temptation has no power until there is a desire within. 2 B. areas are attacked. C. The appeal is to our sensual desires. D. The are hidden. 2. God s Character is challenged or subtly questioned. A. Genesis 3:2-5 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die. Then the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 3. You make the Will I or will I not submit to the Word of God and to His Commandments? Note the charts on page 5. KING DAVID S SIN (2 Samuel 11 12:20) 1. Can a person who is called, anointed, blessed beyond imagination, faithful, and a model leader who experienced great victories fall into temptation and sin? King David did! Here is the anatomy of David s temptation, sin and the process of forgiveness from 2 Samuel. A. David was and vulnerable, not at war where he belonged. B. David that Bathsheba was beautiful. C. David upon his desire to sin and sent messengers to get her. D. Explain how did David dealt with his sin. 2. Because David had hardened his heart, God sent the prophet Nathan to confront David with a parable. As David heard the parable he was so moved and wanted the man imprisoned for stealing the lamb from a neighbor. It was when Nathan said, You are the man! that David was pierced with conviction and repented. (2 Samuel 12:7-14) Here are the steps... A. You are the man! (12:7) B. I have sinned against the Lord! (12:13) C. The Lord has taken away your sin! (12:13) D. David had godly sorrow and there was brokenness of heart and spirit. E. The sin was not, David called it sin and blood guilt. F. 3 I. David accepted the consequences. The principle of sowing and reaping would devastate his family and kingdom. (2 Samuel 12:10-12) Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 3. David s heart was so struck with the conviction of God that he wrote Psalm 51, a public confession. A. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. STEPS TO RECEIVING FORGIVENESS Read 1 John 1:5 2: Never claim to be sinless. 2. with God about the sin ( Confess is homologeo, meaning to agree with). 3. State the sin(s) to God. 4. God s forgiveness (Psalm 103:1-14). 5. Put on garment of praise and thank God for forgiveness. Be! 6. Continue to walk in the light of God s Word and in fellowship with Him and others. 7. Overcome evil with good and force the steps above into a habit. (Romans 12:1-2). A STRATEGY OF DEFENSE Ephesians 4:27 Leave no room or foothold for the devil and give him no opportunity. 1. Deal with small sins. A. Song of Solomon 2:15 Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil and ruin the vineyards, while our vineyards are in blossom. B. Psalm 19:13-14 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 2. with yourself and build consequences and rewards into the covenant. A. Job 31:1 I made a covenant with my eyes Be in dealing with your thought life. A. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5...We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 4. 4 A. Galatians 5:16-18 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature Be to a trustworthy friend. A. Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. (KJV) Be accountable in the following areas: Our relationship with God, our spouse, kids (if married) and friends. Use of money and time. Moral behavior. Ethical behavior. Areas of personal struggle. THREE IMPORTANT STEPS TO VICTORY 1. Confess hidden and secret sin privately to God. Receive His forgiveness and allow Him to purify and cleanse us from sin. The forgiveness is instantaneous, the habit may be a process. 2. As the enemy comes to tempt you again, quickly submit to God, resist the devil and put on the full armor of God. (Next lesson) 3. Take the focus from our own failures and pray for the revival of the church and for a harvest of souls to come into the Kingdom of God. (Hosea 6:2-3; Matthew 9:37) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Matthew 6:13 ASSIGNMENT 1. Read this lesson. 2. Although the story of David s sin and repentance is a sobering story it s important to see that an anointed king and a servant of God is capable of such behavior. However, we can also see the depth of God's great mercy. Read 2 Samuel 11 12:20 and journal your thoughts. 3. Use the Weekly Time Sheet. 4.
