I would like to thank all of our parishioners who have made their gifts and pledges to the campaign this year. Your generosity to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps us reach beyond the boundaries of our Parish to assist the Diocese of Bridgeport meet the needs of Catholic Education, Works of Charity and Pastoral Service, Catechesis and Evangelization and Retired Clergy and Seminarian formation and vocations. 3 PAGE 3 find us at facebook/smcglenbrook NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices? every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child themself. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ. 4 FAITH FORMATION PAGE 4 Family Scripture Reflection (from RCL/Benziger) Luke 1:57-66, 80 Today s Gospel reading begins with the story of the birth of John the Baptist. The grace of God is already with him even before his birth. To begin, Elizabeth gave birth well beyond her childbearing years. Then Elizabeth and Zechariah went against tradition and named the baby John, a name not used in either one of their families.. Relatives and friends of his parents, Elizabeth and Zechariah, already had a sense that this child was destined for great things. God prepares John the Baptist for his role as messenger. He will tell the people about the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Something to ponder: How can you respond to God s grace in your life? Faith Formation Office Vacation! The Faith Formation Office will be closed Sunday, June for vacation. YAY!!! VIRTUS Safe Environments Audit 2018 The Safe Environment audit approaches quickly. Saint Maurice Parish is seeking to ensure that all volunteers are in total compliance with background checks and VIRTUS training. In-person awareness sessions will be held at Saint Maurice on: Saturday, July 7 at 9:30 a.m. in Doran Hall Saturday, August 18 at 1 p.m. in Doran Hall Register online at virtus.org or contact Sandra Kluun, skluun@smcglenbrook.org or ext Additional training sessions are available on various dates and times throughout the diocese. The Safe Environment Initiative is intended to make people more aware of the warning signs of child sexual abuse and how to prevent it. The trainings also provide the correct methods to report suspected abuse both in the State of Connecticut and the Diocese of Bridgeport. Meet Saint Irenaeus Feast day June 28 Irenaeus linked the Church at the time of the twelve apostles and the Church of the second century. He wrote and taught the faith handed on by the apostles and preserved it when it was attacked. His chief concern was unity among the churches. Irenaeus was born about 130 in Smyrna, a port town in western Turkey. He traveled to Lyons, France, where he was ordained a priest. Eventually, he became its bishop. Irenaeus faced a strong battle against Gnosticism. This heresy claimed that eternal life could be gained only by receiving special knowledge about God, knowledge available to a chosen few. Irenaeus taught that, according to Scripture, God wished all people to be saved and to know the truth. The name Irenaeus means peace, and this saint was true to his name. Irenaeus was an important writer and a strong witness to the teaching of the Church as it came from Peter and the other apostles. Perhaps Irenaeus was martyred; we know only that he died in about 200. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSIPRATION FOR THE WEEK As we celebrate today's feast, we are reminded that God creates and fashions each one of us with intent and purpose. We are not random accidents. We are special creations and wonderfully made. Each of us brings a unique twist to the one shot at life that we are given. As people of faith and children of God, we are asked to use our specialness to announce God's kingdom. Each of us reveals a unique part of God's face. Each day presents opportunities to communicate our faith to others and to reveal God's mercy. We have the means to point the way to Christ. How can we show Jesus to others today?
