4 THANK YOU ST. JAMES FAITH COMMUNITY Though many of you seem to be familiar with me now, I would like still to introduce myself briefly to you through this short message. I am by names Ogam, OFM.Cap; a nephew to your Pastor Fr. Ben. I belong to the Order of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars and currently heading the Order in the Provincial Custody of Uganda as the Superior of the Institute. The Capuchin Order is one of the three Major branches of the Franciscan family; the other two being the Conventual Friars and the Franciscans who are serving here in the diocese down town. From the depth of my heart I am grateful to the Pastor, the Parochial Vicar and the Associate priest, Staff and the entire Parish of St. James for according me this opportunity to stay among you and have a taste of Pastoral care in the United State. I came here when I really needed time to rest and regain my lost strength and as I will soon be leaving to go back to Africa (Uganda), I feel I have rested and ready to go back to begin from where I had left. I thank you for your love, and the time we shared together for these few days. The experience I have had with you will help me in my administrative and pastoral work in Uganda. To be a priest in Africa is not easy, in many situations we are confronted with the real challenges of what we preach that demands that we should apply the theory and show that we are really Fathers in the existential challenges at hand; which is not easy. What do we do in Uganda? Capuchins like any other priests, work in parishes and do social works depending on the needs of the area where we are sent. Like most of our parishes in Uganda are in remote areas where people needed the spiritual care but did not have the chance. When we go to these poor and remote areas where others do not want to go, we find that the needs of the people is not only spiritual. Some marginalized places with no proper social services like Health care facilities, schools, basic needs like water because of the nature of the places themselves for example Kanyogogo village in Kiyinda Mityana Diocese. Therefore priesthood in Africa is not only being on the alter, the existential challenges on the ground is so immense that one is forced to enter into experiences that he never thought of in order to testify to the crucified Christ and the fact of being addressed as Father. Personally I am not only involved in pastoral care, being the Major Superior in the administration of the Order in Uganda, the eyes of all the Friars look to me in any case they have failed to forge their ways through in their various places of assignment. We have the obligation as Provincial Custody to train and form the Seminarians, which is the future and asset of the Order and the Church. We are obliged to meet the pastoral demands of the people whom we serve, meet the needs of the individual Friars for instance health care etc. all these make life very challenging. But thank God, He remains God and He is seeing us through it. From the depth of my heart, I take this opportunity once again to thank you for the significant support you gave to us through the mobilization of Deacon Roy, an act of Charity which helped us to construct a descent washrooms and an overhead water tanks for our school girls at St. Francis Senior Secondary School. May the good Lord bless and reward you. Once again I remain grateful to the Pastor, Parochial Vicar and the Associate Priest, Staff and the entire members of St. James Faith Community for your love and care for these two months we have been together. There is no perfection in humanity, in any case through my words I might have hurt someone directly or indirectly I beg for pardon. Peace and blessings! I remain your humble and little servant, Ogam THE STORY OF ST JAMES THE GREATER: The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela became the most important Christian pilgrimage outside of those to the Holy Land. The traditional pilgrimage is known as El Camino de Santiago (in English: The Way of St. James), and it has always been a walking pilgrimage. In fact pilgrims have walked there from many sites all over Europe since the ninth century, so there are many different routes. The most travelled route is known as the Camino Frances; it starts at the border between France and Spain in the western Pyrenees, and winds its way for approximately five hundred miles across northern Spain. The Camino Frances has been such a popular pilgrimage that it has been designated a World Heritage Site. The Name James: The English name James actually comes from the Italian Giacomo, a variant of Giacobo which is derived from Iacobus (Jacob) in Latin, itself from the Greek Jacobos, all originally from Hebrew. In French, Jacob is translated Jacques. In eastern Spain, Jacobus became Jacome or Jaime ; in western Iberia it became Iago, which when prefixed with Sant became Santiago ; in Portugal and Galicia, Tiago is also spelled Diego. Legends: Some claim that St. James preached the gospel in Iberia as well as in the Holy Land. After his martyrdom in Jerusalem, his disciples carried his body by sea back to Spain, where they landed on the coast of Galicia, and took it inland for burial at Santiago de Compostela. Others claim he never went to Iberia, but the translation of his relics from Judea to Galicia was effected by a series of miraculous happenings: after his death in Jerusalem his body was taken up by angels, and sailed in a rudderless, unattended boat to Iberia. Despite controversies then and now the authenticity of the relics of St. James at Santiago de Compostela was asserted by Pope Leo XIII in Another legend says that in 40 AD the Virgin Mary appeared to James upon a pillar on the bank of the Ebro River in north eastern Spain while he was preaching. That pillar is conserved and venerated within the present Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, in Zaragoza, Spain. An even later tradition states that he miraculously appeared before the Spanish troops during the battle of Clavijo in 841 AD and helped turn what was about to be a loss into a decisive victory against the Moors, and was henceforth called Matamoros (Moor-slayer). Santiago y cierra España ( St James and strike for Spain ) has been the traditional battle cry of Spanish armies. There are many portraits of St. James showing him in armor, reflecting this legend. Spain is not alone in claiming the relics of St. James. According to another tradition, relics of the Apostle are kept in the church of St. Saturnin at Toulouse in France, but it is not improbable that such sacred relics should have been divided between two churches.
