AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT JULY 1 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today s second reading from the second letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians is very challenging. First he notes that Jesus, though he was rich, became poor for our sakes. This is somewhat confusing because Jesus was most likely not rich in the monetary sense, if he assumed Joseph s profession as a carpenter. Some scholars believe that Paul is talking about Jesus giving up his divine existence in heaven (riches) for his human existence and ultimately his suffering and death (poverty). This action, which is a lot more significant than giving up wealth, enriches all of us by opening heaven to us. Paul then admonishes the Corinthians to share what they have (their surplus) with those in need. His final quote, Whoever had much did not have more, and whoever had little did not have less, is from Exodus (16:18), when the Israelites were gathering manna in the desert. Recall that manna was bread-like material provided by God to his hungry people. So we are called to share our gifts with others. There are two important points. First, it would be easy to say that we have no surplus, that we are just getting by. However, most of us at St. Augustine s, including students, are probably living better than 99% of the rest of the world. Second, just as the manna in the desert was provided by God, all that we have is a gift from God. We may be enriched by our hard work and education, but the talent and ability to start with are an undeserved gift from our Father. 5 Catholic Student Center and Young Adult Ministries Separando a las Familias en la Frontera: Una Práctica Costosa María, una joven madre, fue abusada y forzada al tráfico sexual por una pandilla local en su pais de origen, Guatemala. Eventualmente, María escapó de esta situación y huyó a Estados Unidos con José, su hijo de 3 años, en busca de protección. Cuando agentes de la Protección de Aduanas y Fronteras apresaron a María y a José en la frontera, decidieron separar a Maria de su niño, aparentemente convencidos que ella era la tía de José. Por tanto, a José se le consideró como no acompañado y transferido al cuidado de la Oficina para la Reubicación de Refugiados y ella fue transladada a un centro de detención para adultos. María sigue detenida y aun no la han reunificado con su hijo. Ha habido un increment significante en la separación de familias en la frontera EEUU/México por el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) y la Protección de Aduanas y Fronteras (CBP). Desde oct. 2017, más de 700 niños han sido separados de sus padres y se les considera no acompañados. La separación forzosa de las familias es muy preocupante por varias razones: Sería muy costoso para los contribuyentes. Esto obstaculizaría la eficiencia judicial Los niños son vulnerables y no deben ser separados de sus padres El aumento de los procesos judiciales y la separación de los padres de sus hijos no va a disuadir a las familias que buscan seguridad en los Estados Unidos Para más información visite: Separating Families on the Border: A Costly Practice Maria, a young mother, was abused and forced into sex trafficking by a local gang in her home country, Guatemala. Eventually, Maria escaped from this situation and fled to the United States with Jose, her 3-year-old son, in search of protection. When agents of the Customs and Border Protection arrested Maria and Jose at the border, they decided to separate Maria from her child, apparently convinced that she was Jose's aunt. Therefore, Jose was considered as "not accompanied" and transferred to the care of the Office for the Relocation of Refugees and she was transferred to a detention center for adults. Maria is still detained and has not yet reunited her with her son. There has been a significant increase in the separation of families on the US / Mexico border by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Protection of Customs and Borders (CBP). From oct. 2017, more than 700 children have been separated from their parents and are considered "unaccompanied". The forced separation of families is very worrying for several reasons: It would be very expensive for taxpayers To implement this policy, taxpayers would have to pay hundreds of dollars each day for each family. This would hamper judicial efficiency Children are vulnerable and should not be separated from their parents The increase in judicial processes and the separation of parents from their children will not deter families seeking safety in the United States. 7 Greater Gainesville, catholic schools, the Diocese and The parish Feast of Mary Magdalene We will be having the 18th annual parish celebration of the feast of Mary Magdalene at Masses on Sunday, July 22. Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy light refreshments after the 5:30 Mass. The Vatican in 2016 raised her memorial to a feast day in the liturgical calendar. Questions about God, your soul, Catholic teachings, becoming Catholic, preparing to receive the sacraments -- especially the questions you feel you should already know, or that no one knows! To get the questions flowing, the RCIA will be showing episodes from Bishop Barron's renowned series -- such as the Catholicism Series, Pivotal Players, and his newest on the Mass -- starting July 1st at 4:00pm in the newly redecorated parish lounge every Sunday until August. Then we will be hosting a Q&A. There will be coffee and doughnuts. All are welcomed. 7
