4 Stewardship in the parish The twenty-sixth Sunday in ordinary time Stewardship Masses on September 18, 2016 The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Offertory: $6, E-Giving: $1, Poor Box: $ Catholic Student Center (CSC): $2, Sanctuary Renovation: $ Catholic Schools: $5.00 STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The cycle of readings at Mass that are relevant to stewardship continues. In the first reading and gospel, rich people don t fare well but be careful in simply interpreting this as God s displeasure with wealth. In the first reading from Amos 6, there appear to be harsh words for the wealthy: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Hey, I just bought new living room furniture. Am I in trouble? In the Gospel of Luke we hear the familiar story about Lazarus, the poor man who was ignored by a rich man. Lazarus ends up in heaven, while the rich man is in hell. So what goes? The key to both of these readings is not wealth in itself. It is the wealthy being complacent and ignoring the plight of those in need. This is wrong because nothing that we have is truly ours. As Fr. Marek said in his homily last week, we are administrators of God s gifts to us. And as the steward in last week s gospel was held accountable for how he handled material matters, we will be held accountable for how we handle God s gifts to us in every sense. Our first response to these gifts should be thanksgiving. In this we acknowledge that God is their source. In our earthly life, when someone gives us a gift, we usually reciprocate. How can we return God s blessings to us? We cannot do a direct deposit or funds transfer to heaven. However, we can return a portion of our gifts of time, talent, and treasure to his Church and his people in need. In hearing today s readings, a great many people may wipe their brow and say to themselves, Lucky for me that I am not wealthy, and so this doesn t pertain to me. There may be people at St. Augustine s who are truly in need of our care. However, by the world s standards, most of us are not doing very badly and are, in fact, living extravagantly. Sure, it s easy to point to someone else and say, They have a lot, let them support the church and care for those in need. I m not so sure that when we are ultimately held accountable, our stewardship of God s gifts will be measured by local, as opposed to universal standards. On a different note, to help build community in our parish, the Knights of Columbus and the Stewardship Committee are sponsoring the second annual Oktoberfest on Friday, October 21. There will be beer, bratwurst, hot dogs, dancing, and kid stuff. Everyone is invited. Last year we had a great turnout, and everyone had a fun time. 5 Catholic student center and young adult ministries The Parish Evangelization Team is a group of 6-8 students who go out into rural parishes and host a day retreat for their youth which focuses on building community and teaching ways of prayer and small group faith-sharing that the youth can continue on their own even if they don't have a strong youth program. The Catholic Gators PET team plans and executes the retreats on Saturdays, then spends the night with parish host families and is at the service of the pastor the following day, serving as liturgical ministers, singing in the choir, and getting to know parishioners. After the PET retreat is over, the team comes back together at the student center, processes what they've learned, and gets ready for the next retreat. 5

Together with your gifts, the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continue his work and mission in our parish. Last month, through your generous gifts and donations, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to visit and assist families in our community by providing 206 lbs. in food and help with GRU and rent bills.
