These apparent miracles by Elisha and Jesus beg the question, How many miracles (that is acts that defy the laws of nature that He, Himself, created) does God do these days, and how many miracles does He do in response to our prayers? We all pray for those in need, for example the hungry, the homeless, and the poor. Have you ever thought about how you expect such prayers to be answered? There are a limited number of possibilities. Let s consider them. Is God supposed to perform a literal miracle and make money, food, clothing, or shelter miraculously appear from nowhere? OK, not many of us has seen or heard of such things happening. I m not saying that God never performs miracles on such a scale, but admittedly they are rare, and so asking for such a miracle is not a good bet for getting our desired outcome for those in need. OK, then maybe God will inspire His people to do the work. Fair enough. Are we praying for God to inspire some OTHER people to become generous? First, God has given us free will, to follow his will or not. That is why there is sin. So God will never force anyone to do good, bad, or any specific act (including giving a friend or relative a job). He will call on us through His Spirit to do His will, though. So again, are we asking God to send his Spirit to other people? That is not a sure thing, because people never fail to fail in doing God s will. The only people we KNOW will be changed by these prayers that we make is US. When praying for those in need, if our prayer is more than just a nice thought, we must open ourselves to be changed by the Spirit within us to do God's will for those in need. If everyone who makes such a prayer opens themselves to being changed, seemingly miracles really would happen, just like the feeding of the multitudes in the reading from today. Not to take anything away from Elisha and Jesus, but some people propose that the inspiration and teaching of Jesus and Elisha inspired those in the crowd to share what they had with those in need, and the shortage was solved. Moving forward, when we pray for those in need, let us ask ourselves if our prayers are no more than a well wish (e.g., You re in my thoughts. ), if we re expecting everyone else to be God s helping hands or if we re willing to let the Spirit work through us to do God s will. 4 Around the Parish, Greater Gainesville and the Diocese Saint Vincent de Paul Society Special Collection: August 5, 2018 Thanks to Mr. Joseph West and students at Saint Francis Catholic Academy for the food drive for SVDP. To all who have donated and those who work to help us assist with delivering food, doing home visits, paying utilities and/or rent, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. In the last six months, we helped 25 families during home visits and 18 families without a home visit. We paid $2, on utilities and $2,100 on rent. Whatever you do for the least one of these you have also done unto me. You are invited to our meeting in Gainesville at St. Patrick Social Hall any Monday at 6:00 PM or call Meetings are also held at 6:30pm on Thursdays at St. Francis- Newberry Conference Room located at W. 7 Greater Gainesville, Catholic schools, the Diocese and The Parish Life Teen Highlight: Luke Winner Luke will be a freshman at St. Francis Catholic Academy this year and is a member of their Wolfbotics Robotics Club. Luke is also a Boy Scout in Troop 432 and currently holds the rank of 1st Class. Luke loves playing video games and learning about how to design and create them. Luke has been an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church his entire life. He is now part of Life Teen and is an altar server at Mass. 7
