This is a basic consideration when requesting marriage, baptism, or to act as a godparent/sponsor. Register in the parish office or on-line. In my Lenten homilies, I have focused on prayer. We have talked about using our imaginations in our prayer and about the distractions that come naturally as we grow in our prayer life. The importance of prayer was abundant in our parish during the 2016 year as St Augustine Church was selected as a Pilgrimage Church by Bishop Estévez during the Jubilee Year of Mercy, and we began and completed the long over-due renovation of our sanctuary. Catholics from throughout the Diocese entered our Mercy Doors to pray, including a special pilgrimage to St. Augustine Church by our seminarians. The completed renovation has been described as stunning, and we have seen an increase in visits to the Blessed Sacrament, daily Mass attendance, and continued financial support. The renovation included the creation of a new cross for the Corpus, the wood and design of which would be consistent with the over-all plan. But how were we to honor the simple, wooden cross of the original crucifix which came to us in 2011 all the way from St Joseph Catholic Church in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where it survived a raging fire that burned down the church and closed the parish. The fire spared only the altar and the crucifix. Some months ago, we began to re-finish this simple wooden cross, and on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, it was placed on the wall of our courtyard. We will refer to it as The Saint Joseph Cross to remind us of its history, but more importantly, to remind us of St Joseph, the carpenter of Nazareth: Patron of the Universal Church, a man of prayer who protected our Blessed Mother and her child, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Is it any wonder that the crucifix of St Joseph s Church in Pennsylvania survived the fire? Was it the protection of St Joseph, the carpenter of Nazareth? Could we say the same about the small fire in our church during the renovation? The electrical fire began no more than two feet from the new wood of the sanctuary steps but traveled no further. Could that same protecting hand have been there? Maybe, yes. I encourage you to take time to pray in the courtyard, reflecting on the story of our St Joseph Cross. You might imagine yourself in the carpenter s shop in Nazareth. You might ask St Joseph how he managed a consistent prayer life with the distractions of business, customers requests for innovative designs, and the ever-present responsibility and honor of protecting Mary and Jesus. The service committee is collecting t-shirts for Tacachale residents. Tacachale is the oldest and largest community for Floridians with developmental disabilities. It is a progressive community dedicated to offering its residents the opportunities and services which respect and encourage their personal choices, enhance their quality of life, and maximize their individual potential. Residents are in need of new or gently used t-shirts from size small to x-large. No shirts with graphic or violent images please. Bins will be placed in the vestibule. 4 Stewardship in the parish Fourth Sunday of lent STEWARDSHIP STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT March 26, 2017 We are in the middle of Lent. If you are a typical Catholic, you have given up something as a form of self-sacrifice. This often involves some aspect of our lives that we overindulge in such as eating, sweets, alcohol, internet, television, etc. These forms of fasting can lead to stronger character, better habits, lost weight, more time, etc. But Lent isn t just a period of self-improvement. We are also called to give alms (money) and to pray. These positive acts, when coupled with fasting, benefit others as well as us. They remind us that we are connected to our brothers and sisters, God s children. Our figurative pain can lead to the betterment of others. Just because we are in the fourth week of Lent, doesn t mean that we can t alter our course, maybe notch it up a bit, possibly make up for some lost effort earlier. Please consider setting aside saved money from fasting and contributing it to a worthy cause. An excellent opportunity at St. Augustine s is the Catholic Relief Services Helping Hands event on Saturday, April 22. We are purchasing bulk food materials destined for Burkina Faso, an extremely impoverished African country. We will package the bulk foods into individual portions, which will then be shipped overseas. There are two ways to participate in this event. First you can donate funds to increase the amount of food that we buy and package. This year we are hoping to double our aid to feed 20,000 people at a cost of $10,000. It is a more satisfying effort to also put your hands on the food that you know will be relieving the hunger of someone in a distant land. We should fast from some activity that wastes time and pray more instead. Give God thanks and praise. Ask for forgiveness. And pray for everyone in need. Then we should let God act through us to fulfill our prayers.
