I will say it again: Rejoice! ~Philippians 4:4 DON T MISS MAY EVENTS (See inside for details) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When I was just out of college, I remember someone asking me what I wanted out of life. At the time, my answer was rather simplistic: I want to be happy. I rationalized that this was a good answer, because it wasn t about the accumulation of wealth or power or fame. I just wanted to be happy: happy in my employment, happy in my relationships and happy in my everyday situations. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, this phrase is literally woven into the fabric of our country, but is happiness really what we should be pursuing? THISTLE S FAMOUS FISH FRY Saturday, May 6, 5-7 p.m. Recently, Bishop John Schol preached a message on the difference between happiness and joy. He reminded us that joy is something entirely different from happiness. Joy, in the Biblical context, is not an emotion. There is a big difference between joy and happiness. Happiness is an emotion and temporary; joy is an attitude of the heart. Happiness is externally triggered. It is based on other people, things, places, thoughts and events, but joy is cultivated internally. It comes from a knowledge of self and as followers of Christ, it comes from knowing our identity as God s beloved children. HANDBELL CONCERT Saturday, May 20, 5:00 p.m. In my final weeks here at PRUMC, I want to celebrate the joy and yes, also the happiness that I have experienced with you over the last six years. Sometimes that joy was cultivated through times of challenge and struggle, but also through times of celebration and promise. My prayer is that you as a family of faith will continue to live into your identity as God s beloved and the joy of this knowledge will move you forward in continued ministry and mission. Choir rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7:30 pm. We meet in the choir room next to the church office. New voices are always welcome. 3 May OUTREACH/COMMUNITY NEWS May "Item of the Month" We would like to request Pasta and jars of Pasta Sauce. Thank you to all who contributed towards April's Item of the Month. We collected a combination total of 50+ toothbrushes and toothpaste. MISSION SUNDAY May 7th, :30am Light breakfast and blessing, 9:30am Service in our community, 12:00pm Lunch and Fellowship Join us as we come together to go out into our community and work as God's hands in love, helping our neighbors. 4 4 SUNDAY SCHOOL/YOUTH GROUP/UMW NEWS May 2017 May 7, 6-7:30 pm Youth Meeting We will be continuing our series on the sermon on the mount. Bring your Bibles and I'll see you there! May 21, 6-7:30 pm Youth Meeting We will be working on a mission trip fund raiser. Please attend if you plan on being a part of this summer's mission team. Please join the Pearl River United Methodist Church and the I want to thank all who helped during the week with the Spring Rummage Sale. Bob Anschick and Juan Rocha had the tables ready in Fellowship Hall for the Scouts who emptied out (for the most part) the Dugout room on Tue. after their meeting. On Wed. and Thurs. we sorted the assortment of items, clothing, house wear, toys, books, furniture, baby items, etc. Thanks to Rena Gesner, Sara Pafford, Joline Junghans, Tommie Ahrens, "model" Heather Conklin and Brian, Pam & Christine Gunning, Winnie Ehrlich, Nancy Kennedy ( who was so excited to work on her first Rummage Sale) along with our friends from the community, Sandy O'Brian and Nancy Browne. On sale day Pam Gunning was back and she brought Sean with her who had taken time on Sat. to run 3 K before reporting for "guard" duty. Pam's mom, Marilyn Rowe was there too. Our checkout people were Alice Lugenbeel (who earned a gold metal) Lynn Kavanagh, and Nancy Kennedy. Winnie Ehrlich helped with refreshments. Eileen Moynahan helped also. A very special thank you to Steve, Sean & Mark Stouffer along with my son Drew & family, Pam, AJ & Andrew ( from Pittsburgh Pa.) helped clean out Fellowship Hall and take down tables. Bob & Juan were there again to pick-up and exchange Rummage sale signs with Fish Fry signs all around town. Camille Cascia, John Murphy an Winnie Ehrlich helped with publicity. 5 May 2017 UPCOMING EVENTS 5 COFFEE WITH PASTOR CYNDI When: First Tuesday of Every Month May 2nd Time: 9:30am Where: Hogan s Diner Why: A chance to talk and connect. FISH FRY THISTLE S FAMOUS FISH FRY is coming back to Pearl River. If you have not marked your calendar yet, please do so now. Saturday May 6 th is THISTLE S FAMOUS FISH FRY at Fellowship Hall. Dinner will be served from 5pm to on a first come first served basis. Tickets are required and are $15.00 for adults and $7.00 for children 12 and under. You get Fish & Chips or Chicken & Chips, Cole slaw, beverage and dessert. Ticket sales will start in April. We need your help in selling the tickets and helping at the Fish Fry. The folks from Thistle s will do all the cooking and clean up after themselves. We have to provide the Maitre d and assistants to control the seating of diners, the servers and bus people to clean and reset the tables. We need a good group of volunteers to set up Saturday morning, to work during the actual Fish Fry and to clean up after it. Can you help us before or after you eat?? Please let our Queen Fish Joann Lee know when you will be there to help. The profit from this dinner will be used to help pay for repairs to our buildings and grounds. Go to for tickets.
