1 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CHRIST THE KING / REIGN OF CHRIST NOVEMBER 22, :30 & 11:00 A.M. ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. THE GATHERING HANDBELL PEAL (8:30) THE REVEREND ANNE H.K. APPLE (11:00) THE REVEREND REBEKAH ABEL LAMAR *Please stand if able. Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship pack at the sanctuary door. PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP The difficult, I ll do now...the impossible might take a while. Billie Holiday, Crazy, He Calls Me PRELUDE NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD J. S. BACH; ARE VIRGIL FOX *CALL TO WORSHIP We have come to worship our all-powerful God, Who came to this earth not as a king but as a servant leader. We have come to worship our all-giving God, Who surrendered human life on a cross yet conquered death three days later. We have come to worship our all-loving God, Who has taught us how to radically embrace all people. Let us worship God! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 268 CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS DIADEMATA

2 *CALL TO CONFESSION When we stand in the light of God s goodness, we see ourselves for who we really are, including our shadows, our brokenness and our sin. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, we often look for you among the high and mighty, forgetting that you came as a poor Galilean to serve the least of these. We listen for your Word in this place, but often fail to hear your voice out in the world. We open our homes and lives to some of your children, often forgetting to care for those most in need. Forgive us, gracious God, for failing to live as your disciples and for neglecting to remember your mighty claim on our whole lives. Extend to us your healing hand, and help us to recognize your reign in this world. (period of silent prayer and meditation) Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you!.

3 We invite young children to come to the front at this me. Each week children bring quarters to put in educa on s cks, so that young girls around the world might have the opportunity for an educa on. Just $275 (1,100 quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for a young girl. As our children come forward for the Children s Time, please pass them quarters to share. The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer (using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors ). Following the Children s Time, parents may escort infants through kindergarten children to Children s Church Con nued (C3) in the Jones Building, 2nd floor. Please pick up children immediately following the service. Before we can know God, God knows us. Baptism, one of the two sacraments of the Presbyterian Church (USA), is in response to the grace of God, who calls us to be the people of God. We welcome children and adults into the fellowship of faith. Parents, the congregation, and children of the church make promises to guide, nurture and love the baptized person PROCLAIM GOD S WORD GATHERING HYMN (11:00) THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? 4 RESPOND TO GOD S WORD In 1985, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) adopted A Declara on of Faith as a contemporary statement of faith, and a reliable aid for Chris an study, liturgy, and inspira on. It does not have official standing in our Book of Confessions, but we con nue to be guided by in in our worship and study.. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The people of God have often misused God's promises as excuses for doing nothing about present evils. But in Christ the new world has already broken in and the old can no longer be tolerated. We know our efforts cannot bring in God's kingdom. But hope plunges us into the struggle for victories over evil that are possible now in the world, the church, and our individual lives. Hope gives us courage and energy to contend against all opposition, however invincible it may seem, for the new world and the new humanity that are surely coming. Jesus is Lord! He has been Lord from the beginning. He will be Lord at the end. Even now he is Lord. (from A Declaration of Faith) MS. APPLE On behalf of the congrega on, one of the worship leaders expresses the corporate prayers of the congrega on. These prayers are for world, local and personal concerns. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE PRESENTATION OF GIFTS, TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY (8:30) CHRIST BE OUR LIGHT BERNADETTE FARRELL KeDavion Taylor, soloist (11:00) MY SHEPHERD WILL SUPPLY MY NEED VIRGIL THOMSON My Shepherd will supply my need: The sure provisions of my God Jehovah is His Name; Attend me all my days; In pastures fresh He makes me feed, O may Thy house be my abode, Beside the living stream. And all my work be praise He brings my wandering spirit back There would I find a settled rest, When I forsake His ways, While others go and come; And leads me, for His mercy s sake, No more a stranger, nor a guest, In paths of truth and grace. But like a child at home. Psalm 23 When I walk through the shades of death Thy presence is my stay; One word of Thy supporting breath Drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, Doth still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, Thine oil anoints my head.

5 Doxology literally means words of glory. Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Chris ans to praise God. Here we honor and thank God from whom all blessings flow. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION (8:30) The invita on to the Lord s Supper is extended to all who desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the communion table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Christ Jesus. WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP PRAYER *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 643 *BENEDICTION NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT DR. 9 To be grateful is to recognize the love of God in everything He has given us and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gi of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him. Thomas Merton Visit the ministry tree in the main hallway and add a leaf to the ministries that mean the most to you. The tree reminds us of the broad reach of the church and that each of us are its stewards. If you pledge, please consider an increase this year. If you are a new member or have not pledged before, now is the me to begin. Everybody s pledge is important because our 2016 budget is based upon pledges. Your pledge means that the church s ac vi es, from youth, adult and children s programs to global missions and community outreach, can con nue to grow and serve. Please turn in a pledge card or pledge online at stewardship. If you have any ques ons concerning stewardship, please contact Jim Harwood at or jim.harwood@fabsrv.com.
