1 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BAPTISM OF THE LORD; JANUARY 10, :30 & 11:00 A.M. Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. HANDBELL PEEL (11:00) ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. *Please stand if able. THE GATHERING (8:30) THE REVEREND REBEKAH ABEL LAMAR (11:00) THE REVEREND MARGARET BURNETT Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship pack at the sanctuary door. Processing with the clergy and choir this morning are Charles Key, outgoing clerk of Session; Jason Hood, incoming clerk of Session; Sam Stewart, outgoing chair of the Board of Deacons; and Ca e Jane Berger, incoming chair of the Board of Deacons. We give thanks to God for the ways these leaders have lived into their bap smal callings by serving, with their administra ve gi s, the governing boards of the church.. PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE What is faith? Faith is being grasped by the power of love. Faith is recognizing that what makes God is infinite mercy, not infinite control; not power but love unending. William Sloane Coffin, Credo *CALL TO WORSHIP WIE SCHÖN LEUCHT UNS DER MORGENSTERN ( O MORNING STAR, HOW FAIR AND BRIGHT, HYMN NO. 827) (Verses of the hymn are sung alternating with variations played at the organ.) JAN PIETERSZOON SWEELINCK ( ) May the one who still shines in the darkness bring light to us this day. May the one who was washed in the Jordan bring new life to us this day. May the one who removes night with the gift of dawn come to us this day. May the one who restores the broken mend us with cleansing waters. Beginning with an allusion to Romans 6:9, this exuberant bap smal hymn unfolds the implica ons of our incorpora on into Christ s new life, making us a new crea on (2 Cor. 5:17). The hymn text was wri en to fit this expansive tune by a dis nguished Bri sh composer. Sisters and brothers, praise the Lord! The Lord s name be praised! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 485 WE KNOW THAT CHRIST IS RAISED *CALL TO CONFESSION ENGELBERG

2 We come before God in complete honesty, confessing our sins, and asking God by the grace of forgiveness, to restore what is broken. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION We are precious in your sight, yet we often forget that we are your beloved. We confess that our love is fickle and inconstant. We follow selfish goals and deny that our way of life harms others and hurts your world. We are sorry and we want to change. Create in us a clean heart, strengthen our resolve, reconcile us to one another, and bless us with your peace. (period of silent prayer and meditation) Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! We invite young children to come to the front at this me. Each week children bring quarters to put in educa on s cks, so that young girls around the world might have the opportunity for an educa on. Just $275 (1,100 quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for a young girl. As our children come forward for the Children s Time, please pass them quarters to share. The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer (using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors ). Following the Children s Time, three-year-olds through senior kindergartners may go to C3. Parents, please take your children out to the hallway, but the T.K. Young Room, and sign them in. Helpers will escort them to Room 203W in the Jones Building. If you have babies, toddlers or two-yearolds, you will take them to the nursery area (2nd floor east, Jones Building). PROCLAIM GOD S WORD GATHERING HYMN (11:00) THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? No! This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? No! This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? No! Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine. Let it shine. TIME WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH (11:00) THE LORD S PRAYER WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MS. ELIZABETH HOUSTON THE REVEREND DR. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY

3 By connec ng the water in the font with the waters of crea on, the parted waters through which the Israelites were set free, and the rivers that sustain life everywhere, this hymn reminds us that bap sm incorporates us into God s crea ve, redemp ve, and sustaining ac vity. *PROCLAMATION HYMN NO. 484 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OUT OF DEEP, UNORDERED WATER RUSTINGTON MR. CHARLES KEY OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ISAIAH 43:1-7 (PAGE 672, OT, PEW BIBLE) GOSPEL LESSON LUKE 3:15-17, (PAGE 60, NT, PEW BIBLE) DR. MONTGOMERY This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON IT S ALL IN A NAME DR. MONTGOMERY RESPOND TO GOD S WORD In 1985, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) adopted A Declaration of Faith as a contemporary statement of faith, and a reliable aid for Christian study, liturgy, and inspiration. It does not have official standing in our Book of Confessions, but we continue to be guided by in in our worship and study. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH MS. ABEL LAMAR We believe that in baptism the Spirit demonstrates and confirms God s promise to include us and our children in his gracious covenant, cleansing us from sin, and giving us newness of life, as participants in Christ s death and resurrection. Baptism sets us in the visible community of Christ s people and joins us to all other believers by a powerful bond. In baptism we give ourselves up in faith and repentance to be the Lord s. For both children and adults, baptism is a reminder that God loves us long before we can love him. For both, God s grace and our response to it are not tied to the moment of baptism, but continue and deepen throughout life. 4 . Doxology literally means words of glory. Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Chris ans to praise God. Here we honor and thank God from whom all blessings flow. (11:00) O THOU, CENTRAL ORB CHARLES WOOD ( ) *DOXOLOGY O Thou the central orb of righteous love, Pure beam of the most high eternal light of this our wintry world. Thy radiance bright awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above. Come, quickly come, and let thy glory shine, gilding our darksome heaven with rays divine. Thy saints with holy lustre round thee move, as stars about thy throne, set in the height of God s ordaining counsel. As thy sight gives measured grace to each, thy power to prove. Let thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, Our nature all shall feel eternal day in fellowship with thee. Transforming day to souls, erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen. H. R. Bramley Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION ORDINATION & INSTALLATION OF ELDERS & DEACONS (11:00) MR. KEY, DR. MONTGOMERY, THE REVEREND ANNE H.K. APPLE STATEMENT ON ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS PRAYER OF ORDINATION AND LAYING ON OF HANDS DECLARATION, WELCOME, AND CHARGE CONGREGATIOANL RESPONCE I, the Lord of sea and sky, Refrain: Here I am, Lord. I have heard my people cry. Is it I, Lord? All who dwell in dark and sin I have heard you calling in the night. my hand will save. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I, who made the stars of night, I will hold your people in my heart. I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? The invita on to the Lord s Supper is extended to all who desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the communion table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Christ Jesus. THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION (8:30) WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

5 Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP PRAYER This 20th-century text was wri en by a Presbyterian layperson and poet who, in her later years, became interested in wri ng hymns for the seasons of the church year and prepared a collec on for her congrega on. It pairs effec vely with this sturdy Welsh tune. *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 280 *BENEDICTION COME, O SPIRIT, DWELL AMONG US EBENEZER DR. MONTGOMERY POSTLUDE POSTLUDE ON ENGLEBERG CRAIG PHILLIPS (B. 1961) (Based on today s Processional Hymn.) WORSHIP NOTICES The Sanctuary flowers are given today to the glory of God and in celebra on of the wedding anniversary of Be y Lee and Fraser Humphreys, who were married here 67 years ago. They are honored by their children and grandchildren: Rick Humphreys; Lily and Fraser Humphreys, Hayly and Fraser; and Beth and Bruce Moore, Libby, Jim, Sam and Mary Margaret. New church officers will be ordained/installed during the 11:00 worship service. We are grateful for these dedicated men and women who serve God with their me, skills and gi s of the Spirit. The Bap sm of the Lord Is celebrated today: At the beginning of his public ministry, Jesus presents himself to John to be bap zed in the Jordan. The heavens open, the Holy Spirit descends as a dove, and we hear the voice of God: You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. At this fes val of the Chris an year, we not only remember Jesus bap sm but we celebrate our own: the bap sm we share with Christ. Accordingly, this Sunday is an appropriate me to celebrate the sacrament of bap sm or the reaffirma on of the bap smal covenant. It also foreshadows the season of Lent, as Jesus was immediately driven into the wilderness for 40 days a er his own bap sm. Large print bulle ns and hymns are available on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher. Camera and video use is not allowed during the worship service. Please turn off your cell phone. Members and guests, please indicate your presence on the Friendship Roster this morning. The 11:00 service is live at new.livestream.com/idlewild, or search for Idlewild in the Livestream phone or Roku app. You can also listen on WREC-AM 600 or at or use the iheartradio app. Music is printed under Onelicense.net A VISITOR NOTICES We welcome our visitors this morning. Jesus establishes clearly that the greedy accumula on of things is an a empt by persons to evade dependency on God. The one who greedily hoards possessions in order to establish security for the future lacks the faith that Jesus expects of those that follow Him. Our security, according to Jesus, is in our rela onship to God in whose hands lies our future. Tony Campolo If you pledge, please consider an increase this year.
