SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 10, :30 & 11:00 A.M. Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. *Please stand if able. Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship packet at the sanctuary door. During Advent we consider the ques on: How do we welcome the Christ child? In front of the communion table, we have a cradle, a manger, which we will spend this season preparing for Christ. In the pews, there are strips of cloth, which we ask you to give to the children to bring forward during the children s me each week and to lay in the manger. This ac on of preparing a place for Jesus symbolizes our inten on to create space in our own lives to welcome Jesus, however he may come to us. Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus with its opening Come, this hymn sounds the note of entreaty and invita on that characterizes the Advent season (from the La n adventus = coming ). Its blending of memory and hope helps us to give voice to our present faith as we stand between the past and the future. THE GATHERING HANDBELL PEAL (11:00) ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE (8:30) THE REVEREND DR. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY (11:00) THE REVEREND MARGARET BURNETT In darkness, we long for light. Let us prepare our hearts and minds as we come to worship Jesus Christ. NUN KOMM, DER HEIDEN HEILAND, BWV 659 (BASED ON HYMN 102, SAVIOR OF THE NATIONS, COME ) OPENING WORDS OF INSTRUCTION *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 82 *CALL TO ADVENT WORSHIP COME, THOU LONG-EXPECTED JESUS God longs for us to be a people of peace and gathers us to worship. Thank you, God, for this day. We ask God s blessing upon the longing that brought us here. Bless our lives, Lord Jesus Christ. We seek a sense of the mystery of God with us. Come, Holy Spirit. Come. JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH ( ) HYFRYDOL

*ENTRANCE OF LIGHT One voice: Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has power to save us. Make us your living voice. All sing: (8:30) MS. KELLI CONRAD (11:00) MR. NATE TAYLOR In the presence of a holy God, we become aware of the ways we fall short of God s best hopes for us, and the ways we have hurt others. We turn to God in prayer, asking for forgiveness. We express gra tude that through God s grace and Christ s giving of himself on the cross we are forgiven and restored to God and one another. During Advent, the light of the candles remind us of the good news of Christ s mercy. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION God who is always with us, you promise that you are coming, But we are not ready to welcome you. You urge us to repent, But we turn away. You wait patiently for us, But we are distracted and disillusioned in our waiting. Have mercy on us, God of grace. Help us prepare for you and your kingdom. (silent prayer and meditation) Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON We light the candle for hope. We thank you, God. We light this candle for peace. We thank you, God. Hear the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven. Alleluia! Amen.

We sing in thanksgiving for the gi s of forgiveness and new life. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! Choir alone: The virgin womb that burden gained With virgin honour all unstained; The banners there of virtue glow; God in his temple dwells below. All sing the Refrain. Choir alone: Forth from his chamber goeth he, That royal home of purity, A giant in two-fold substance one, Rejoicing now his course to run. All sing the Refrain. PROCLAIM GOD S WORD We invite children to come to the front at this me. Each week children bring quarters to put in educa on s cks, so that young girls around the world might have the opportunity for an educa on. Just $275 (1,100 quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for a young girl. As our children come forward for the Time with the Younger Church, please pass them quarters to share. In addi on to quarters, in Advent children will bring forward cloth to prepare Christ s cradle. GATHERING HYMN (11:00) One voice: Darkness and light and all that s known by sight, Silence and echo fading, Weave into one a welcome for the Son, Set earth its own maker serenading. All respond: Cloth for the cradle

The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Following the Time with the Younger Church, PK and JK children (three and four-yearolds) may go to Children s Church Con nued (C3). Parents, please take your children out to the hallway by the T.K. Young Room and sign them in. Helpers will escort them to the library. Children two years old or younger may go to the nursery (Conference Room). Children in senior kindergarten and older are welcome to come up for the Time with the Younger Church, then stay in the sanctuary for the en rety of the worship service. This 17th century German paraphrase of Isaiah 40:1 5 was one of the hymn texts translated as part of the 19th century Bri sh interest in German religious poetry. It is set here to one of the most popular Genevan psalter tunes, probably derived from an earlier French folksong.. TIME WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH (11:00) THE LORD S PRAYER WELCOME AND CELEBRATIONS *PROCLAMATION HYMN NO. 87 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Come, Come, Emmanuel Cherub Choir Mary Jane Claassen, director MS. CAITLIN C. BOMAR DR. MONTGOMERY COMFORT, COMFORT NOW MY PEOPLE GENEVAN 42 THE REVEREND ANNE H.K. APPLE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ISAIAH 40:1-11 (PAGE 667, OT, PEW BIBLE) ANTHEM (11:00) THIS IS THE RECORD OF JOHN This is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What art thou then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, What art thou that we may give an answer unto them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself? And he said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord. John 1:19 23 (the Geneva Bible) ORLANDO GIBBONS ( ) GOSPEL LESSON MARK 1:1 8 (PAGE 34, NT, PEW BIBLE) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE REVEREND REBEKAH ABEL LAMAR The sermon is a reflec on on the day s scriptures, sugges ng implica ons for our faith and life. SERMON MS. ABEL LAMAR

RESPOND TO GOD S WORD In 1985, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) adopted A Declaration of Faith as a contemporary statement of faith, and a reliable aid for Christian study, liturgy, and inspiration. It does not have official standing in our Book of Confessions, but we continue to be guided by in in our worship and study. We bring to God our celebra ons and cares, praying for the world, the church and those close to us. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We are certain that Jesus lives. He lives as God with us, touching all of human life with the presence of God. He lives as one of us with God. Because he shares our humanity and has bound us to himself in love, we have an advocate in the innermost life of God. We declare that Jesus is Lord. (from A Declaration of Faith) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE PRESENTATION OF GIFTS, TITHES, AND OFFERINGS DR. MONTGOMERY OFFERTORY (8:30) HE SHALL FEED HIS FLOCK (FROM MESSIAH ) G.F. HANDEL Ginger Hopkins, soloist Doxology literally means words of glory. Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Chris ans to praise God. Here we honor and thank God from whom all blessings flow. (11:00) HOW LOVELY ARE THE MESSENGERS How lovely are the messengers that preach us the gospel of peace. To all the nations is gone forth the sound of their words, throughout all the lands their glad tidings. Romans 10:15, 18 *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! FELIX MENDELSSOHN ( ) *PRAYER OF DEDICATION

The invita on to the Lord s Supper is extended to all who desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the communion table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Christ Jesus. THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION (8:30) WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Though many Advent hymns address Christ with entreaty and invita on, this more contempla ve hymn text considers how an individual prepares for and responds to Christ s coming. It also brings together a recollec on of the First Coming with an an cipa on of the Second Coming. WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP PRAYER *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 104 CHARGE O LORD, HOW SHALL I MEET YOU? VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN God of the watching ones, the waiting ones, the slow and suffering ones, the angels in heaven, the child in the womb, Give us your benediction, your Good Word for our souls, that we might rest and rise in the kindness of your company. MS. ABEL LAMAR *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE LORD CHRIST, THE ONLY SON OF GOD MS. ABEL LAMAR HEINRICH SCHEIDEMANN ( )
