SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH TRINITY SUNDAY; JUNE 11, :30 & 11:00 A.M. Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. *Please stand if able. Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship pack at the sanctuary door. The hymn All Glory Be to God on High was adapted from Gregorian chant for use in German Lutheran churches. It is one of the earliest of the Lutheran hymns and remains sung weekly as paraphrase of the can cle Gloria in excelsis, which is a hymn praising the Trinity. THE GATHERING HANDBELL PEAL (11:00) ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE (8:30) THE REVEREND DR. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY (11:00) THE REVEREND MARGARET BURNETT When despair grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting for their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry TWO SETTINGS OF ALL GLORY BE TO GOD ON HIGH CHARLES W. ORE (B. 1936) PAUL MANZ ( )

The Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession are written in a repetitive litany form, so that even the youngest members can participate. *CALL TO WORSHIP Oh, Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Much of the imagery of this hymn comes from Revela on 4:2 11, which its author, an Anglican bishop, knew as a reading appointed for Trinity Sunday. The tune, wri en specifically for this text, reinforces the Trinitarian theme by strong dependence on the D-major triad. In the presence of a holy God, we become aware of the ways we fall short of God s best hopes for us, and the ways we have hurt others. We turn to God in prayer, asking for forgiveness. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established, what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 1 *CALL TO CONFESSION *PRAYER OF CONFESSION HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! LORD GOD ALMIGHTY! Almighty God, You created our world and called it good, ordering and perfecting the complexity of all living things. We confess that we have treated this world of yours as our own, failing to live in awe of you and the magnificence of the earth. We have often put our own interests first, exploiting your creation and living for our own convenience and self-interest. We confess that we do not treat all people as ones created in your image, allowing poverty, hunger, and illness to mute the gifts of these children of yours. Forgive us for our willful ignorance, for our greed, and for our failure to be responsible stewards of your good creation. Remind us that in caring for your wonderful world, we are working for your kingdom, honoring your creative power, and giving you glory. (silent prayer and meditation) Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen. NICAEA

We express gra tude that through God s grace and Christ s giving of himself on the cross we are forgiven and restored to God and one another. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE We sing in thanksgiving for the gi s of forgiveness and new life. The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you!

We invite young children to come to the front at this me. Each week children bring quarters to put in educa on s cks, so that young girls around the world might have the opportunity for an educa on. Just $275 (1,100 quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for a young girl. As our children come forward for the Time with the Younger Church, please pass them quarters to share. The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Following Time with the Younger Church, children PK-SK may go to C3. Parents, please take your children out to the hallway, by the T.K. Young Room, and sign them in. Helpers will escort them to Room 203W in the Jones Building. Children two years old or younger may go to the nursery (2nd floor east, Jones Building). PROCLAIM GOD S WORD GATHERING HYMN (11:00) TIME WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH (11:00) MS. CAITLIN C. BOMAR THE LORD S PRAYER WELCOME AND CELEBRATIONS DR. MONTGOMERY Though a lack of punctua on makes this hymn text appear freeform and the flowing tune enhances a sense of movement, each stanza here is firmly anchored by a final weighty word (praise, save, thanks, life, peace, home), a sign of God s eternal presence in an everchanging world. *PROCLAMATION HYMN NO. 22 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION GOD OF THE SPARROW ROEDER THE REVEREND REBEKAH ABEL LAMAR OLD TESTAMENT LESSON GENESIS 1:1-2:4 (PAGE 1, OT, PEW BIBLE) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The sermon is a reflec on on the day s scriptures, sugges ng implica ons for our faith and life. SERMON MS. ABEL LAMAR

RESPOND TO GOD S WORD A Brief Statement of Faith was written shortly after the Presbyterian Church (USA) reunited in 1983, and was included in the 1990 Book of Confessions. It lifts up concerns that call most urgently for the church's attention in our time. A sound confession proves itself as it nurtures commitment to the church's mission and as the confessing church itself becomes the body by which Christ continues the blessing of his earthly ministry. We bring to God our celebra ons and cares, praying for the world, the church and those close to us. In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich. Dietrich Bonhoeffer *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH In life and in death, we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love, God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies and truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God s condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE PRESENTATION OF GIFTS, TITHES, AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY DR. MONTGOMERY (from A Brief Statement of Faith) DR. MONTGOMERY (8:30) JESU, JOY OF MAN S DESIRING J. S. 6 (11:00) O TRINITY, MOST BLESSED LIGHT C. KENNETH TURNER O Trinity, most blessed Light, O Unity of sovereign might, As now the fiery sun departs, Shed Thou Thy beams within our hearts. To Thee our morning songs of praise, To Thee our evening prayer we raise; Thee may our glory evermore In lowly reverence adore. All praise to God the Father be, All praise, eternal Son, to Thee, Whom with the Spirit we adore Forever and forevermore. St. Ambrose, , trans. John M. Neale, Doxology literally means words of glory. Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Chris ans to praise God. Here we honor and thank God from whom all blessings flow. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION (8:30) The invita on to the Lord s Supper is extended to all who desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the communion table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Christ Jesus. WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP PRAYER With minimal revision this hymn text brings together six of the eight four-line stanzas in an 18th century hymn wri en for children and originally headed Praise for Crea on and Providence. The anonymous German tune provides a fi ng sense of breadth and wonder. *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 32 I SING THE MIGHTY POWER OF GOD ELLACOMBE *BENEDICTION MS. We are confident that we will see glimpses of God s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven, much in thanks to your willingness to go before God in prayer. Dona ons wanted for VBS mission: Our VBS mission for the week is to build the free library for low income families at Idlewild s new Child and Family Enrichment Center. We are looking for children s picture and chapter books, adolescent fic on and non-fic on books, and paren ng books. Items can be dropped off in the tub by the bulle n board across from the front office. Summer of Service: Faith In Action: We are doing something different for Sunday School this summer in children s ministry! We are dedicating four weeks of focus to three different areas of service that Idlewild is involved in: -Cuba (May 28, June 4, June 11, and June 18) -More Than a Meal (June 25, July 2, July 9, and July 16) -Backpack Program (July 23, July 30, August 6, and August 13) PK-1st grade students will begin the summer in Room 203W, and 2nd-5th grade students will begin in Room 310E. We are still in need of a few more teachers on June 18 and July 30. The purpose of this program is to teach children a truth that Idlewild embraces so well: Faith without works is dead. (James 2:26) It will be a fun summer, and we hope you don t miss out on being involved! Fellowship event for families of rising 2nd-5th graders: In an effort to build community, we have been offering a number of off-site fellowship opportunities for children and their families over the course of the past few months. John Feild has offered to host a gathering for families of rising 2nd-5th graders on Friday, June 23, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. (1291 Winchester Blvd., Collierville). There will be no agenda for the evening other than to enjoy one another s company. Please RSVP to Caitlin Bomar at cbomar@idlewildchurch.org no later than Monday, June 19. A fellowship opportunity for young families with at least one child who is JK (4 yrs. old) or younger is held the last weekend of every month. This month s gathering will be hosted by Taylor and Alison Berger on Saturday, June 24, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Please bring a side dish to share and RSVP to Caitlin no later than June 19. There is no agenda other than to enjoy an evening in good company amidst the busyness of raising little ones. Children s Church Continued (C3) is combining PK, JK, and SK into one class for the summer. May 28 June 18 will be in Room 204W. Beginning June 25, C3 will be held in the library. We are almost totally covered with volunteers for the summer, but beginning August 20, when we start our fall schedule, it would be outstanding if a few men and women could commit to being the regular rotating volunteers so that we don t have different teachers every single week. Consistency for our children would truly be best. Please let Caitlin Bomar know if you are interested in being a regular C3 teacher this fall. Sunday School teachers for the school year are needed. We are s ll in need of a few more people to commit to being Sunday School teachers this coming school year. Our most dis nct need is for the PK/JK Sunday School class. Sunday School teachers are remembered for years by the children they teach for the important role that they play in the spiritual forma on of young people. Is God calling you to fill this important need? A six-week support group for mothers of young children will take place this summer, on Wednesdays beginning June 21, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at 28 S. Evergreen Street, the address of the new Children and Family Enrichment (CAFE). The hope for this time is that it will be a therapeutic pause midweek to find support in the midst of the busyness of raising little ones. Expectant mothers are more than welcome! Please RSVP to Brenda Harris at brenda@idlewildchurch.org.

WELCOME TO IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Whether you are visi ng for the first me, or are a long me member, we are blessed to have you with us. You will no ce that our vision statement begins and ends with Idlewild Presbyterian Church is a community in which...all who enter might find a home. We take these words seriously. We strive to be a community as diverse and hospitable as God s kingdom. We don t all look or act alike; God knows we don t all think alike. We don t all read the Bible the same way. We bring different ques ons, and we carry different burdens. But every Sunday, we worship together as one. In this grand old church, we do Sunday morning in some pre y tradi onal (very Presbyterian!) ways. We study the teachings and the ac ons of Jesus. We sing many of the same hymns our grandparents sang. Yes, in our preaching and our prayers, (and many of our newer hymns!) we wrestle with the challenges of the modern world. I hope your heart will hear something personal and relevant this morning a word of comfort, a spur to ac on, a call to a deeper rela onship with God. A er the 8:30 service, join us for Sunday School. There are lots of op ons. A er the 11:00 service, s ck around. Come to the fellowship hall for some punch or a cup of coffee. Introduce yourself to one of our clergy. There are tons of opportuni es here to feed your soul and expand your spirit. Try one out. You never know you just might be home!
