SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT /THE PROMISE OF THE PROPHETS DECEMBER 13, 2015 / 8:30 & 11:00 A.M. In the third week of Advent we remember to hope in the God of always and already, in God with us. There is gladness here.

ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. *Please stand if able. Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship pack at the sanctuary door. THE GATHERING PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP (8:30) THE REVEREND MARGARET BURNETT (11:00) THE REVEREND ANNE H.K. APPLE As we gather ourselves to worship this day, we recall the prophet s promise that we will rejoice in God s presence. PRELUDE TWO CHORALE PRELUDES ON GENEVA 42 (BASED ON HYMN NO. 87) JOHANN PACHELBEL ( ) GEORG BÖHM ( ) HANDBELL PEAL (11:00) This 17th century German paraphrase of Isaiah 40:1 5 was one of the texts translated as part of the 19th century Bri sh interest in German religious poetry. It is set here to one of the most popular Genevan psalter tunes, probably derived from an earlier French folksong. The Advent Wreath lighters for today s service are Idlewild members who coordinate and lead our More Than a Meal worship service every Thursday evening at 5:00 in the chapel. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 87 COMFORT, COMFORT NOW MY PEOPLE GENEVAN 42 *CALL TO ADVENT WORSHIP/LIGHTING OF THE WREATH (8:30) MS. BURNETT (11:00) MS. ANNABELLE FLANDERS, CANDLE BEARER MS. LAUREN HOBSON & MR. ANDREW HOBSON, GARLAND BEARERS MS. MINNA GLENN, MS. MAIZIE RHEA & MR. FRED TERRY, CANDLE LIGHTERS Gathered in God s promise that we will rejoice in God s presence, We come to worship Emmanuel, God with us. We light this candle, remembering the promise of the prophet Zephaniah: The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; God will rejoice over you with gladness, will renew you in love; God will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival.

When we stand in the light of God s goodness, we see ourselves for who we really are, including our shadows, our brokenness and our sin. *CALL TO CONFESSION *PRAYER OF CONFESSION We hear your prophet s words that we will rejoice, but we are buried in fear and despair. We hear your prophet s promise that you will rejoice, but we shrink away from you. You call us to imagine a life of joy in your presence, but we neglect your vision. Merciful God, open our eyes, our ears, that we might stand with your prophets. (period of silent prayer and meditation) Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON During the season of Advent we not only look forward to the coming of the Christ child, but also look forward and prepare for the second coming. This spirited African American gospel hymn draws upon John s vision of a new heaven and a new earth in Revela on 21:3-4, with its wonderful promise that God will wipe away the tears from all eyes, that death will be no longer, and that there will be no more mourning or pain. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you!

We invite young children to come to the front at this me. Each week children bring quarters to put in educa on s cks, so that young girls around the world might have the opportunity for an educa on. Just $275 (1,100 quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for a young girl. As our children come forward for the Children s Time, please pass them quarters to share! The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer (using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors ). Following the Children s Time, parents may escort infants through kindergarten children to Children s Church Con nued (C3) in the Jones Building, 2nd floor. Please pick up children immediately following the service. Before we can know God, God knows us. Baptism, one of the two sacraments of the Presbyterian Church (USA), is in response to the grace of God, who calls us to be the people of God. We welcome children and adults into the fellowship of faith. Parents, the congregation, and children of the church make promises to guide, nurture and love the baptized person PROCLAIM GOD S WORD GATHERING HYMN (11:00) TIME WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH (11:00) LIGHT OF HOPE, LIGHT OF PEACE Primary Choir and Hand Bell Ringers THE LORD S PRAYER BAPTISM (11:00) MS. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY These tles of the coming Christ appeared in daily Vesper an phons sung during the week before Christmas; their roots date at least to the reign of Charlemagne. Both text and tune are the fruit of 19th century efforts to reclaim Chris an treasures from pre-reforma on sources. *PROCLAMATION HYMN NO. 88 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION O COME O COME EMMANUEL VENI EMMANUEL DR. MONTGOMERY RESPOND TO GOD S WORD In 17th century Paris there was great religious devo on in convents throughout the city. O en, during Sunday Vespers the nuns would sing elaborate musical se ngs of texts of the Office, some mes accompanied by musical instruments. Marc-Antoine Charpen er s Gaudia Virginis Mariae is one such piece. *MUSICAL RESPONSE (11:00) GAUDIA VIRGINIS MARIAE Gaude virgo mater Christi Quae per aurem concepisti Gabriele nuntio. Gaude mater salvatoris Dum te mater praecursoris Vocat in hospitio. Gaude quia Deo plena Peperisti sine pena Cum pudoris lilio. Gaude quia magi dona Tuo nato ferunt bona Quem tenes in gremio. Gaude quia juxta legem Obtulisti mundi Regem In templi sacrario. Gaude quia tui nati Quem dolebas mortem pati Fulget resurrectio. Gaude Virgo quia misit Paraclitum quem promisit Sanctorum collegio Gaude quae post ipsum scandis Et est honor tibi grandis In coeli palatio. Amen. MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER ( ) Rejoice, virgin mother of Christ who conceived by hearing, with Gabriel as messenger. Rejoice, mother of the Saviour, while the mother of the precursor (John the Baptist) calls you in hospitality. Rejoice because, full of God, you gave birth without pain with the lily of chastity. Rejoice because the Magi bring good gifts for your son, whom you hold in your arms. Rejoice because in accordance with the law you offered the king of the world in the sanctuary of the temple. Rejoice because the resurrection of your son, whom you mourned when he suffered death, is resplendent. traditional, liturgical Pamela Schnell, Alyce Tarver, Donia Rachelle Wade, soloists

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. MS. BURNETT With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 12:2-6) On behalf of the congrega on, one of the worship leaders expresses the corporate prayers of the congrega on. These prayers are for world, local and personal concerns. In Advent the prayers of the people employ the O An phons. The Greek word an phon comes from the combina on of two words that mean opposite and voice. An an phon is a response used in worship. The O An phons have been used since the ancient church during the Advent season. They begin with an address, O and a descrip on of Jesus using Old Testament biblical imagery. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE O Dayspring, first and brightest Star, splendor of light eternal and sun of righteousness: Come and enlighten those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. Without you, we stumble in shadow and hopelessness. We have need of you, hidden Light. For we ask for mercy. O Lord, come to us here. O King of Nations, and their desire, the cornerstone making both one: Come and save the human race, which you fashioned from clay. Without you, foundations shake and crumble. We have need of you, coming King. For we ask for mercy. O Lord, come to us here. PRESENTATION OF GIFTS, TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY (8:30) GAUDIA VIRGINIS MARIAE (see above) MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER ( ) The text of Cover Me with the Night is a slightly modified tradi onal night prayer from Ghana, West Africa. (11:00) COVER ME WITH THE NIGHT (see music notes) ANDREA RAMSEY Come, Lord! And cover me with the night. Spread your grace over us, when the night is cold and dark. Your promises are more than the stars in the sky. Your mercy is deeper than the night. Lord, we wait for you. Day and night, we wait for you. Come Lord. Traditional prayer from Ghana Othman Djuliarso, djembe

Doxology literally means words of glory. Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Chris ans to praise God. Here we honor and thank God from whom all blessings flow. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION MS. BURNETT The invita on to the Lord s Supper is extended to all who desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Christ Jesus THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION (8:30) WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and faithful thing to praise you, O God, Lord of all creation, the one who laid the earth s foundation. At the sound of your voice, all the world rejoices. Through the words of your prophets, you spoke promises to your people, promises of your nearness and of joy. In the fullness of time, you came to walk and teach and heal among us, sending those who drew near to you into peace and into joy. In your life, death, and resurrection, you dispelled despair and offered new life. Even now, through the witness of the Spirit, we are invited to rejoice. At this table, we gather as one body, remembering your promise, tasting grace with gratitude, and looking to Bethlehem with hope. Here, we remember that in the week WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP PRAYER Though many Advent hymns address Christ with entreaty and invita on, this more contempla ve hymn text considers how an individual prepares for and responds to Christ s coming. It also brings together a recollec on of the First Coming with an an cipa on of the Second Coming. *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 104 *BENEDICTION O LORD, HOW SHALL I MEET YOU VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN POSTLUDE NUN KOMM, DER HEIDEN HEILAND, BWV 660 (BASED ON HYMN NO. 102, SAVIOR OF THE NATIONS, COME ) DR. MONTGOMERY JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH ( )
