SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 28 TH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME ; OCTOBER 11, :30 & 11:00 A.M. By the 1950s our congregation had outgrown the space in our building. Adult Sunday school classes and a college class were meeting in the vacant houses on Evergreen which had been bought for our future expansion. In , those houses were razed to begin construction on a new education/recreation building. Adult classes met during that time in the old Hutchison school, which was located on Union behind Idlewild school. This photograph is of the LeMaster class meeting at Hutchison.
ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. *Please stand if able. Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship pack at the sanctuary door. THE GATHERING HANDBELL PEAL (11:00) PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP THE REVEREND DR. KENDRA HOTZ What is your only comfort, in life and in death? That I belong body and soul, in life and in death not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. (from, the Heidelberg catechism, question #1) PRELUDE VERSES AND CANZONA IN D MINOR DOMENICO ZIPOLI ( ) The regal, divine imagery here will not be new to most singers, but some may not expect the third stanza s image of God as mother. Yet it is part of God s self-descrip on in Isaiah 66:13. This Bohemian Brethren tune resembles both Genevan psalm tunes and French folk songs. When we stand in the light of God s goodness, we see ourselves for who we really are, including our shadows, our brokenness and our sin.. *CALL TO WORSHIP From God comes our life and breath. Let us praise our creator. From God comes peace and healing. Let us praise our redeemer. From God comes all we need to meet each new day. Let us praise God our sustainer. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 645 *CALL TO CONFESSION *PRAYER OF CONFESSION SING PRAISE TO GOD WHO REIGNS ABOVE Gracious God, we are too often deceived by the world s myth That power and wealth give life meaning. When we desire things more than your will, Forgive us. When we pursue comfort before faithfulness, Forgive us. When we focus our eyes on the next step of the ladder rather than our neighbor, Amen. Forgive us. Help us let go of our fears and on insecurities. Renew our trust in you. (Private prayer and meditation) MIT FREUDEN ZART
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE The choir sings: All sing: Good Jesus Christ, our Brother, died in darkest hurt upon the tree to offer us the worlds of light that live inside the Trinity. The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! We invite young children to come to the front at this me. Each week children bring quarters to put in educa on s cks, so that young girls around the world might have the opportunity for an educa on. Just $275 (1,100 quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for a young girl. As our children come forward for the Children s Time, please pass them quarters to share. The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer (using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors ). Following the Children s Time, parents may escort infants through kindergarten children to Children s Church Con nued (C3) in the Jones Building, 2nd floor. Please pick up children immediately following the service. PROCLAIM GOD S WORD GATHERING HYMN (11:00) THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? No! I m gonna let it shine I m gonna let it shine This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? No! I m gonna let it shine I m gonna let it shine This little light of mine, Hide it under a bushel? No! I m gonna let it shine I m gonna let it shine Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine. Let it shine. TIME WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH (11:00) THE REVEREND DR. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY THE LORD S PRAYER
Before we can know God, God knows us. Baptism, one of the two sacraments of the Presbyterian Church (USA), is in response to the grace of God, who calls us to be the people of God. We welcome children and adults into the fellowship of faith. Parents, the congregation, and children of the church make promises to guide, nurture and love the one being baptized. BAPTISM (11:00) MARY ELIZABETH HILL, DAUGHTER OF CASEY & ALI HILL BAPTISM HYMN CHILD OF BLESSING, CHILD OF PROMISE DR. MONTGOMERY Child of blessing, child of promise, Child of God, your loving Parent, Baptized with the Spirit s sign, Learn to listen for God s call. With this water God has sealed you Grow to laugh and sing and worship, Unto love and grace divine. Trust and love God more than all. BAPTISM PRAYER WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS DR. MONTGOMERY Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore is one of the most popular songs to emerge from the 1970s revival of religious song in Spain. It asks singers to become like the fishermen who le boats and nets to follow Jesus, first as disciples learning his way of love, then as apostles carrying that love to others. *PROCLAMATION HYMN NO. 721 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION LORD, YOU HAVE COME TO THE LAKESHORE PESCADOR DE HOMBRES DR. MONTGOMERY GOSPEL LESSON MARK 10:17-31 (PAGE 46, NT, PEW BIBLE) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON BLESSED DISTURBANCE DR. MONTGOMERY RESPOND TO GOD S WORD MINUTE FOR STEWARDSHIP & CHRISTIAN FORMATION GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY (11:00) MR. LEWIS DONELSON On behalf of the congrega on, one of the worship leaders expresses the corporate prayers of the congrega on. These prayers are for world, local and personal concerns. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE PRESENTATION OF GIFTS, TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY DR. HOTZ (8:30) THINK ON THESE THINGS J.C. KIRLIN Donia Rachelle Wade, soloist (11:00) JESUS, SWEET ARE THOSE THOUGHTS OF THEE TOMÁS LUIS DE VICTORIA ( ) Jesus, sweet are those thoughts of thee Which fill our hearts most joyfully; Yet sweeter far that bliss will be, Evermore thy blessed face to see. attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (12 th c), trans. John Rutter
Doxology literally means words of glory. Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Chris ans to praise God. Here we honor and thank God from whom all blessings flow. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION DR. HOTZ The invita on to the Lord s Supper is extended to all who desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the communion table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Christ Jesus. THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION (8:30) WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. This lively hymn text was wri en for the 90th anniversary of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Echoing Psalm 98, it is a prime example of a 20th century hymn style based on phrases rather than complete sentences. The exuberant tune was created expressly for these words. WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP PRAYER *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 26 EARTH AND ALL STARS! *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE TRUMPET TUNE IN D MAJOR EARTH AND ALL STARS DR. MONTGOMERY DAVID N. JOHNSON ( )

So, get ready to enjoy the day and experience Idlewild s special history in the heart of Midtown. Chris an stewardship uses the life God gave you for God s purposes. Your money is a tangible extension of that life. God does not so much call you to give your money as to give yourself. Yet genuinely giving yourself always involves giving that financial extension of who you are. Herb Miller Please visit the ministry tree outside the fellowship hall and add a leaf to the ministries that mean the most to you. The tree reminds us of the broad reach of the church and that each of us are its stewards. If you pledge, please consider an increase this year. If you are a new member or have not pledged before, now is the me to begin. Everybody s pledge is important because our 2016 budget is based upon pledges. Your pledge means that the church s ac vi es, from youth, adult and children s programs to global missions and community outreach, can con nue to grow and serve. Please complete the pledge card you received in the mail, or pledge online at If you have any ques ons concerning stewardship, please contact Jim Harwood at jim.harwood@fabsrv.com or

Celebrating 125 Years Generations of Generosity Highlighting Idlewild Christian Education A FIRM FOUNDATION FROM THE PAST Educa on at Idlewild has always meant expansion. The way of learning at this church is the work of widening. We ask ques ons. As a people we are formed in wondering s light. We seek to sit enduringly with God in our days of love and in our days of fear. We seek this place with all our faith. And we seek it also in the ache of our doubt. Educa on is an examining an ongoing and an always. The stories of scripture move in and around us. In our individual lives, in their crossings and passageways, we know the Word. We are developed of it. We explore it. Idlewild reads scripture asking what did it mean for the people when it happened, what did it mean for the people for whom it was wri en, and what does it mean to us now. Classes were separated by gender un l the 1950s. The LeMaster Class for young couples was the first to break from this. These members were meant to move into different classes a er five years but none would budge. They learned, and learned each other. Educa on was a weaving of people. Classes like LeMaster have gathered and sought God over the years. They have prayed that Idlewild give comfort when we are uncomfortable, and discomfort when we are comfortable. This church challenges, offering the idea that crea on con nues outside of an event at the beginning. Offering that our crea ng God is moving in the world, already and always. Learning brings the side effect of respect. Chris an educa on in this place welcomes students into a priesthood of all believers. With this name, we are obliged to respect the beliefs of other members, other churches and denomina ons, and other faith tradi ons worldwide. Years ago, twelve Idlewilders of this believing respect entered into discussion groups with twelve Temple Israel members. Over the six weeks, the conversa on dug past its mid beginnings and a Temple member spoke candidly. All Jews believe that all Chris ans believe we are damned to hell. The Idlewild group began the work of convincing, saying our God is your God, choosing love. Wri en by Lizzie Apple from memories and reflec ons gathered from our congrega on. The Chris an forma on ministry at Idlewild seeks to build on the firm founda on of educa onal ministry while discerning where God is calling us next. Important ministries such as Sunday school and Sunday evening gatherings for QUEST (middle school youth) and BASIC (high school youth) con nue to be important vehicles for passing on the faith. Children s ministry, under the leadership of Elizabeth Houston, con nues to offer a yearly vaca on Bible school experience for children of Idlewild and the community. Youth Ministry, led by Frank Kelly and Dara Bigger, plans annal summer trip experiences, with plans to a end the Montreat Youth Conference next summer. Young Adult ministry, under the new leadership of Sarah Wolf, con nues their Sunday school classes and regular gatherings and retreats. Adult Ministry con nues a strong Sunday school program as well as numerous Bible study and small group opportuni es. These examples scratch the surface of what is happening with the faithful support of faithful volunteers in each of these areas. The term Chris an forma on is one that may be new to many. Many churches are adop ng it in order to reflect an emphasis on transforma on a complete change of how we see and interact in the world in the name of Jesus Christ rather than merely an acquisi on of knowledge. The term Chris an forma on helps us remember that our classrooms are one part of the church s work to help people grow in faith, while also pushing us to think beyond the classroom experience as well. As we look to the future, We are asking, How are people formed in their Chris an faith? As we discover answers to this ques on, we are seeking to provide opportuni es for people to experience God and to be transformed by the renewing of [their] minds (Romans 12:2). With Rebekah Abel Lamar s arrival as Associate Pastor for Chris an Forma on, the children, youth, young adult, and adult ministries of the church are seeking ways to collaborate and support each other in the goal of offering opportuni es for faith forma on. Tuesdays Together, which kicked off this week, is an example of this collabora on. A commi ee, along with staff for each age group, came together to plan an intergenera onal me of table fellowship, worship, educa on, and service. We look forward to con nuing these on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. through the month of October. We give thanks for the ways God is at work in the Chris an Forma on ministry at Idlewild and are excited to see where God will lead us next.
