The private ownership of goods is justified by the need to protect and increase them, so that they can better serve the common good; for this reason, solidarity must be lived as the decision to restore to the poor what belongs to them. These convictions and habits of solidarity, when they are put into practice, open the way to other structural transformations. Changing structures without generating new convictions and attitudes will only ensure that those same structures will become, sooner or later, corrupt, oppressive and ineffectual (Joy of the Gospel, 189). Happy Memorial Day On Monday, we will have Mass at 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. There will be no afternoon Exposition or Benediction.

The Ascension of the Lord Pastor s Column May 28 Today, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord Jesus into heaven to take His place at the right hand of God the Father. In our passage from the Acts, Luke reminds us that his gospel, the first book, dealt with the words and deeds of Jesus. The second book, the Acts of the Apostles, recounts the words and deeds of the Apostles. Jesus speaks Ascension Icon to His apostles and asks them to remain in Jerusalem and await the baptism of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes they will go out to the ends of the earth to spread the gospel. In our passage from St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians, Paul says the Church is really the Body of Christ. Without it, there would not be the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. The revelation of the mystery here reaches an unexpected peak. Now, it is the Church that contributes to the fulfillment of Christ who would otherwise be like a head without a body. Such a claim might seem rather exaggerated, even entirely inappropriate, in so far as it might mean that the glory of Christ could be truncated. Actually, Paul is affirming, in a very strong way, a truth that is customarily expressed in milder terms. Christ has been enthroned at the right hand of the Father as conqueror of all the powers of evil, as the Savior of the world. By His blood, He has gained for God the Church, the jewel of His glory. We may confidently say that without the Church, Jesus would not be the Christ: it fills up what might be lacking in His glory, in His fullness. In the gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus directs the apostles to gather on the mountain in Galilee. It is the very same mountain where Jesus began his public ministry. This mountain in Galilee is on the edge of the pagan world as He ascends to the Father and sends the apostles to the whole world. Jesus solemnly invests the apostles with the mission for which they had been chosen: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. The apostles must leave the mountain and carry the Good News to the world. Baptism is the sign of adherence to the gospel and of belonging to the Lord. It is a sacrament of faith in order to receive it one must believe in God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This profession of faith is at the center of our Christian life. As one is baptized, the disciple must translate this profession of faith into action by keeping the commandments to love as Jesus loves. The apostles have a responsibility to teach as Jesus taught. They are given the great responsibility of maintaining and transmitting what Christ has taught. We call this the deposit of faith. The Church continues to exercise this teaching ministry in the magisterium of the Church. Finally, the Lord Jesus promises, I am with you always until the end of the age. This promise is given to the apostles and to us. To all who believe in Jesus, He will be present to console, rescue, and strengthen us especially through all of the sacraments but especially the gift of the Eucharist His own Body and Blood. God bless you, Father Ron 2
3 Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament May 28, 2017 To Give God Thanks and Praise: Lessons on the Liturgy Keeping Memory This weekend, we celebrate Memorial Day in the United States. Appropriately, we pause to honor our military men and women who have died while in service to our country. The parade down Constitution Avenue will offer tributes to those who have fallen in various conflicts chronologically from the Revolutionary War to the current War on Terror. A wreath will be laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Cemeteries across the country will be filled with visitors and flags will grace countless graves. Concerts will play patriotic songs, fireworks will light the sky, and picnickers will pause from their activities to say a prayer of thanks. The Church has a long and rich history of offering prayers for the dead. Indeed, the custom of daily Mass grew, in large part, from the habit of celebrating Mass atop the graves of those who had died, especially on the anniversary of their deaths. Special Mass texts gradually were developed to commemorate their passing and to beseech God s mercy on their souls. Before Vatican II and its enrichment of the Liturgical Year calendar, nearly all weekday Masses were Requiem Masses. Let us pause this weekend to pray for all our Dead, but especially those who have died in service to their country. Almighty, ever-living God, who rule both the living and the dead and are merciful to all, we humbly beseech you, that those for whom we pour out our prayers may obtain pardon for their sins through your tender mercy, rejoicing together, blessed in your sight and praising you without end. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 5 Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament May 28, 2017 Visit Your Parish Library The Easter Message History is a tool of the storyteller and fiction is a way of meditating on human agents, wrote Ralph McInery in 2004*. The following historical novels will draw you into the imagination of three distinguished writers who bring the Easter message to a wider world: Barabbas, by Pär Lagervist (F L132 B171). One of Sweden s greatest writers tells the story of the man who was freed when Our Lord was condemned to take his place and who witnessed the crucifixion and its aftermath. We enter his simple confusion, disbelief and amazement, his desire to escape into the shadows, shunned by the growing community of believers whom he constantly meets. His life progresses into old age but he can t forget the One who took his place at Golgotha. Lagervist was a poet and playwright. In this book, he s also a brilliant psychologist and artist. Dear and Glorious Physician, by Taylor Caldwell (F C152 D217). This richly detailed book about the life of St. Luke (the only Gospel writer who was not a Jew) begins with his childhood in Antioch, the son of a former Greek slave in the household of the Roman governor. Lucanus studied medicine in Alexandria and travelled widely. He never saw Christ but heard about him from witnesses, from disciples and the Apostles and, most movingly, from Our Lady. The author spent decades in researching and writing this book. She interweaves her understanding of Babylonian science, the Greek wisdom of the unknown God and the Roman materialistic worldview into a fascinating panorama of early Christian life and revelation. The Spear, by Louis de Wohl (F D286 S621). The author considered this, his 53rd book, his magnum opus. It tells of the days before the crucifixion and powerfully describes the rival groups and social conflict. This frames the heart of the story of the Roman centurian, Cassius Longinus, who thrust his spear into the side of Christ. The story begins just before the start of Jesus public ministry and all the figures whom we know from the Gospels are in this book woven into the main theme of a man of his time who wins the pearl of great price. Thank you for returning your library books and discs to the library when you have finished reading them. Please call for further information. * Heaven s Our Destination (Crisis Magazine, July/August 2004) Did You Know?? And how are they associated with our bell tower chimes? If you sound out G-E-C (middle C) in that succession, you may easily recognize the NBC chimes logo from vintage radio days or from early television times as out-cues for station breaks. First broadcast in the G-E-C sequence over NBC s Photo by Joe Bozik networks on November 29, 1929, stations were required by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to sign-on by identifying themselves by call-letters and by city name (also on an hourly basis). As the radio industry mushroomed nationally in the 1920 s, a method was needed over air-waves to gesture, in a synchronized fashion, affiliated radio stations to pause for station identification required by FCC. The G-E-C chimes sequence was hence devised to be struck manually by an announcer at a program s conclusion, pleasing to the listening public, yet analogous to an audio traffic signal, cleverly letting the affiliated stations engineers and technicians to identify themselves. Yes, our own chimes manufacturer, John C. Deagan Company, fabricated the chimes manually struck by the NBC technicians. To be continued Who Knew?: NBC applied in November 1947 to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registering the G-E-C chimes as an identification trademark for broadcasting purposes. The filing was approved on April 4, 1950 becoming history s first such audible trademark. Missed a previous Chimes Chatter column?
