A small step, in the midst of great human limitations, can be more pleasing to God than a life which appears outwardly in order but moves through the day without confronting great difficulties. Everyone needs to be touched by the comfort and attraction of God s saving love, which is mysteriously at work in each person, above and beyond their faults and failings. Pastor s Column Today we celebrate Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. In our first reading, Melchizedek, the king of Salem and priest of God most high meets Abraham. Melchizedek s offering of bread and wine and the blessing given is not inspired by ulterior motives but is an efficacious ritual. Abraham recognized that God had protected him during his victory over four kings. Abraham rendered homage to Melchizedek, the priest, because he spoke in the name of the one true God and only He is the author of all blessings. In St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians, he recalls the words of the liturgy which would have been very familiar to them. We are reminded that the Eucharist is more than a mere commemoration of the past event of the death and resurrection of Christ it is our very participation in this paschal mystery. The Eucharist is truly and really the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. We are caught up in the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection. The Eucharist establishes a bond of indissoluble continuity between the today of salvation, in which we already share, and its full manifestation, the object of our hope, that will take place at Christ s return. This is one and the same mystery. The Eucharist announces what is still to come, and it gives us the pledge of it. It is the sacrament of faith and hope for us. In Luke s gospel, we see Jesus feeding the large crowd with five loaves and two fish. The multiplication of the loaves is a great sign pointing to what Jesus would do at the Last Supper with his disciples. Only Jesus can provide the food the crowd needs, the food able to satisfy their hunger. At the Last Supper the Lord Jesus gave the Eucharist to His disciples as the sign of the New Covenant. The abundance of bread endlessly broken is such that down through the centuries there will Gospel Of Otto III, Feeding of the 4000 Late 10th or early 11th century, illuminated Gospel Book Source of Image: always be enough left to allow the disciples to distribute it for all those who gather in order to commemorate the Lord Jesus passion, death, and resurrection. God bless you, Father Ron Poor Box Donations Donations collected during the month of May will benefit A Wider Circle, an organization that provides furniture and household items to families moving out of homeless shelters and to others with emergency needs. It also offers an intensive job preparedness program, as well as workshops on such topics as financial planning, healthy parenting, and nutrition. 2

4 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Visit Your Parish Library Recent Gifts to the Library Nora Webster, by Colm Toibin (F T573 N35). The troubles in Ireland adds to the uncertainty and devastation felt by the heroine of this story, unexpectedly widowed in her forties. With four young children and little money she faces the loss of the love of her life, Maurice Webster, a schoolmaster, who drew her out of a confined and narrow society in Wexford. Irritated by the constant solicitude of her neighbors, Nora withdraws into herself. How she emerges as a renewed person is beautifully told. Her love for her children, her love of music, and finally a new job in Dublin, lead to a conclusion that transforms her life. Suite Francaise, by Irene Nemirovsky (F N344 S39). This historical novel about the occupation of France by the Germans in World War II, was written during the time it depicts; it s also partly a memoir since the French author was arrested in 1942 and died in Auschwitz. This book amalgamates two volumes of a projected series of five. It is an unusual and vivid novel of human suffering and love in an era of cruelty and hatred. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie (F S1 B18). During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, beginning around 1966, boys and girls who had attended secondary school were sent to the country to be re-educated. The author was one of these 12 million young people. He has turned his experiences into a riveting novel. The narrator, son of a doctor, and his friend, Luo, are sent to a remote mountain, Phoenix of the Sky. Their teachers are illiterate former opium farmers and no books are allowed except scientific works and those by Mao. However, one of the other youths has hidden a suitcase full of translated western classics in his hut and they manage to get their hands on one, Balzac s Ursule Mironet. The effect is dynamic. They share their discovery with a young girl, the little seamstress, with whom they both fall in love. Their poignant awakening and what ensues is another story of coming of age and the transformative power of literature. Chimes Chatter Observing closely our chimes programmer clock in the work sacristy, one notices the silver and onyx semi-circles designating daytime ( a.m. ) and night time ( p.m. ). What do a.m. and p.m. stand for? These are abbreviations of Latin words: ante meridiem (before mid-day) or a.m., and post meridiem (after mid-day) or p.m. Ancient astronomers divided the day into the sunlight day and the moonlight day (or darkness of the day). Since the astronomers ascertained that there were twelve lunar cycles (or months) in a year, it is surmised the Photo by Joe Bozik ancient s logical progression was to also divide the daylight hours into twelve equal segments (developing a basetwelve hourly system or duodecimal system). Curiously, the ancients daylight savings time was not adjusted twice a year, but the duration of hours varied frequently with the season; calculated as one twelfth of the time between sunrise and sunset. Surprisingly, in the summer with longer daylight time (say 14 hours between sunrise and sunset), one-twelfth of the daylight could mean one hour being 70 minutes long (onetwelfth of 14 hours x 60 minutes). Alternatively, a winter hour could be 45 minutes in duration due to the shorter amount of daylight from sunrise to sunset (using an example of nine hours between sunrise and sunset). With the development of mechanical clocks during the 14th century, exactly sixty minutes in every hour became a necessity. Why 60 minutes in each hour? To be continued. Chime-in with your story? 5 Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament School News Come one, come all to celebrate Elaine Nortz s retirement after 30 years at Blessed Sacrament School. We will honor Elaine on Friday, June 10, at a 9:15 a.m. all school liturgy, which will be followed by a small reception in the upper parish center room. She would love to see alums, alum parents, and former colleagues. Thanks so much. May 29, 2016 Faith Formation Sunday Readings/Questions For Reflection... from the Faith Formation Commission Genesis 14:18-20: In what ways does Melchizedek prefigure Jesus? 1 Corinthians 11:23-26: What do we believe Jesus meant when he said, Do this in remembrance of me? To what does this refer? Could it mean more than one thing? Luke 9:11b-17: The crowd had been listening all day, spellbound by Jesus words in a deserted area, away from villages. How would the disciples have taken care of so many hungry people? How did Jesus? (Source: Center for Liturgy at St. Louis University) Behind the Altar: Sodality at Blessed Sacrament The Blessed Sacrament Sanctuary Sodality is a society of women dedicated to fostering Marian virtue in daily life. The group consists of 13 active units, with 370 members ranging in age from the teens to the eighties. With the generous support of the parish at its 2015 Fall Bazaar, units were able to provide donations totaling more than $20,000 this year to the following organizations: APCAN Bethlehem House Cadets for the Cause Catholic Charities Cup of Joe Catholic Charities St. Maria s Meals DC Diaper Bank Dorothy Day Worker House Horton s Kids John S. Skeptical thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris vigorously attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God? Find out how in this new six-part film series and study program by Bishop Robert Barron, which will be offered at Blessed Sacrament on three Wednesdays, June 8, 15 and 22, 7-8:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.
