Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization. Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are disciples and missionaries, but rather that we are always missionary disciples. If we are not convinced, let us look at those first disciples, who, immediately after encountering the gaze of Jesus, went forth to proclaim him joyfully: We have found the Messiah! (Jn 1:41). So what are we waiting for? (Evangelii Gaudium,120).

Inclement Weather Policy The parish center/office follows Montgomery Pastor s Column Today, we gather to celebrate Passion Sunday recalling Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem with the blessing of our palms. We also listen and reflect on the Passion of Jesus according to Luke evoking the cruel and harsh conditions of His death which brings about His victory over sin and death. In Isaiah, we meet the Suffering Servant whose perseverance and fidelity are exalted. Where does his strength come from? The Servant put his trust in God and remains nonviolent as he is attacked. The Lord instructs him and therefore he must speak the word he is given. The daily nearness of the Servant to the Master explains his courage and ability to comfort others who are tired. Jesus is presented as the Servant of God and the cruelties inflicted on Him were its profound realization. Such is the logic of the cross: to die by the hatred of others in order that they may live again by Christ s love. Only God can give all of us proofs of His love and render us capable, through the example of Jesus, His Servant, of hoping against all hope in the victory of love stronger than death. In St. Paul s letter to the Philippians, we read the Christological hymn of Jesus. It immediately places us at the center of the divine mystery and therefore our own human mystery. God desired us to be saved by one like ourselves though free from sin. Christ humbles Himself by entering into our humanity. From beginning to end, Christ s earthly life was a Yes to God so that salvation would be brought to our world through Him. Just as sin and death entered our world through Adam, salvation is brought forth by the New Adam, Jesus. Our hymn of praise and glory to God for so great a Redeemer is Jesus Christ is Lord! As we read the Passion according to Luke, we become aware of the number of people who are mentioned in the story. We meet the disciples, crowd, soldiers, Jewish leaders, thieves and others. As disciples, we are inspired by those who meet Jesus along the way to Calvary or stand at the foot of the cross. Simon helps Jesus to carry His cross; the women and children comfort the Lord as He makes His way to Calvary; the good thief begs for mercy; and the centurion professes his faith on seeing Jesus die. Jesus shows His total trust and assurance in God knowing that His prayer will be heard as He entrusts His spirit to the Father. Throughout His passion and to the end, Jesus does not cease doing good as He wins salvation for us and our world. God bless you, Father Ron Poor Box Donations Donations collected during the month of March will benefit the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House, which provides a home for five previously homeless families and also distributes food and

4 Visit your parish Library - Movie for Lent The children s collection, chosen and donated by parents, has many books that will delight your young friends, especially during this season. The following sample combines faithcentered text with wonderful illustrations: The Beautiful World God Made, by Rhonda Gowler Greene, illustrated by Anne Wilson. Large format with plenty of details in the whimsical illustrations and a rhymed text make this a stimulating version of the creation story. A Child s Book of Prayer in Art, by Sister Wendy Beckett (Gift of Carolyn Carroll) The Adult Center All parishioners, 39 and holding, are invited to gather in Apt. 1 in the Chevy Chase apartment building next to the church for fellowship after the 11 a.m. weekday Mass. Bring a sandwich and join the activities. For more information or for transportation, call Rita Killian at Monday - Light Lunch follwed by Eighth Grade Passion Play Tuesday - Strong Seniors Strength and Balance Exercise Class Wednesday - Art Class with Dick Swartz Thursday - Closed Friday - Closed Looking at Art is One Way of Listening to God states Sister Wendy (many of whose books on art are in the collection). The outstanding publisher, DK, has reproduced unusual paintings for an insightful text. The Parables of Jesus, by Tomie depaola The author and illustrator is one of the best. There s a distinctive style about these illustrations that captivate both children and adults. The seventeen parables are simplified and there s a list of sources. EASTER EGGS! Once again the soup kitchen ministry is requesting dyed eggs for the Easter Monday celebration at the kitchen. Please drop off eggs at the home of Ann and Kent Cooper, 6004 Nevada Av. NW, anytime on HOLY SATURDAY or EASTER SUNDAY. A great project for children! Any time during Lent Experience the Holy Land Near Home Experience Gethsemane, Calvary, Christ s burial and the Resurrection at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land. A pilgrimage site for those who cannot travel to the place of Jesus Incarnation, the monastery includes full-size replicas of Calvary, the Tomb and the Grotto of Gethsemane, as well as outdoor stations of the cross. Student and parish groups welcome. Free tours daily. The monastery is at 1400 Quincy St. NE, Washington, DC. Unbound: Freedom in Christ Conference at Mother of God Community April 1st & 2nd This conference by Neal and Janet Lozano will present a sound and practical way for Christians to experience a greater freedom from the influence of sin & evil in their lives and to enjoy a greater fullness of life won for us by Christ s death and resurrection. In addition, the teaching will assist those who have a compassionate calling to help others gain that same freedom. For information go to or call Chimes Chatter We Last Learned - there were six companies beginning at the 20th century offering tower chimes: Harrington, Durfee, U.S. Tubular, Mayland, McShane and Deagan. So why did Blessed Sacrament contract with Deagan chimes of Chicago? Four suggestions are offered. First and unmistakably, our founding pastor, Msgr. Smyth, and chime s committee members desired a quality instrument commensurate with our new, in 1927, tastefully constructed Church. All six companies offered superior sounding tubular instruments. Second and importantly, only McShane and Deagan companies presented electrically automated systems. Presumably Blessed Sacrament staff had no intent to hand operate chimes on a daily nor hourly basis. A sample (see photograph) illustrates pump handles of manually operated chimes. Wooden baton-type handles are pushed down about five inches with appropriate vigor, to make the clapper hit the tubular chime, sounding the peal. Third and obvious, by the 1935 purchase of our chimes, Deagan was the preeminent manufacturer of tubular tower systems, as other companies were no match for Deagan s competition. Lastly and notable, is the fact that Msgr. Smyth and chimes committee may have heard, and subsequently sold-on, two other Deagan chimes systems pealing in the city, at All Souls Episcopal Church and National City Christian Church. Who Knew?: Perhaps Msgr. Smyth heard chimes in two Baltimore churches during visits to his brother, Rev. James Smyth of St. Peter s Church on Pannock Street. St. Lucy s (Patrick Street, only 4 blocks from St. Peter s) has a 1924 Deagan system, and Congregational Church s system was installed in Moreover Msgr. Smyth may have heard one of five Deagan chimes in New York City when visiting his other brother, Rev. John Smyth, of the Paulist Fathers. In whichever case, installation of chimes marked the fulfillment of a desire long cherished by Msgr. Smyth. Outreach Christian Family Movement Ministry A Prayer for Help in Ending Violence The only son in a family with four daughters, he was gunned down last summer and died on the street. Police do not know if he was an intentional target. His sisters made t-shirts with his face on them; they wear them on Fridays, the day the five used to get together to start the weekend. (Wash. Post, 1/3/16.) Let us pray: Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have prayed in times of war, disaster and illness. We come to you Father and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which give respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be the peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask you this through Christ our Lord.
