In accord with the personal and fully human character of conjugal love, family planning fittingly takes place as the result of a consensual dialogue between the spouses, respect for times and consideration of the dignity of the partner. In this sense, the teaching of the Encyclical Humanae Vitae (cf. 1014) and the Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio (cf. 14; 2835) ought to be taken up anew, in order to counter a mentality that is often hostile to life (Joy of Love, 222). Important Announcements Due to on-going roof repairs, Adoration will be in the chapel. 5:30 pm Mass will continue to be in the Church.

Inclement Weather Policy The parish center/office follows Montgomery County Schools for delays and closings. All evening activities are cancelled those days the schools are closed. Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Column Dear Parish Family: As the leaves fall, the weather gets cold, and the daylight lessens, our thoughts naturally turn to the winding down of life. November is the month dedicated to prayer for our beloved dead. While the passing of a lovedone is a traumatic event in the life of anyone, commemorating the dead is not meant to rekindle grief; rather, is a time for giving thanks. The most appropriate way for Catholic Christians to do this is in the context of Eucharist the ultimate act of thanksgiving. Reflections on our ancestors naturally lead to thinking about our own brief lives. Again, our thoughts ought to be filled with gratitude; but, there is a practical purpose in such meditation. We help our families greatly when we let them know our desires with regard to our funeral and burial. Indeed, planning the funeral liturgy is an excellent way to enliven hope in the resurrection. Keep in mind that the Mass is not a place for family members and friends to expect to give eulogies. The priest will incorporate into his reflection on the biblical readings the faith and life of the one being honored with Christian Burial. Nonetheless, the guidelines of the Archdiocese do indicate that one person might be designated to make personal remarks either prior to the Mass, after communion, at the wake or at the burial. Our parish can provide you with suggested Scriptures and music. Planning also obviates painful questions regarding burial wishes. The Church asks that all human remains be buried or interred in a mausoleum or columbarium. Our belief in the mystery of the Incarnation linked with that in the resurrection of the body dictates that human remains are not to be scattered or even placed on a shelf at home. They are to be placed in a sacred place with the dignity they deserve. I have fond memories of visiting cemeteries with my parents and hearing their stories about our ancestors who are buried there. These sacred grounds are special places for prayer and for reflection on our heritage of faith. Blessed November, Father Bill Foley Interested in Altar Serving? If you are a fifth-grade or older student who is interested in serving at Mass, we would love for to consider signing up to be one of our Blessed Sacrament altar servers! 3 Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament November 12, 2017 Blessed Sacrament Facilities Update Parish Projects: Church Roof Our roof restoration project for the Church is well under way. The contractor has removed the fixture for fabrication and fixed several of the smaller areas around the church building. Simultaneously, they are fabricating flashing off site. Once the fabrication is done, we will see removal of slate on substantial areas of the roof. The plan is to begin removing large sections of slate from the roof this week. During this week especially, please be attentive to the construction areas which are off limits to pedestrians for safety reasons. As previously noted, there may be delivery trucks on Quesada Street or other trucks may be parked there. Also, sidewalk areas may be temporarily blocked periodically for safety reasons, but all church entrances should remain open. Donations for the roof are starting to come in and we now have $111,300 towards our $350,000 goal for our roof project. Thank so much for your generosity. 6 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 Chimes Chatter The Roaring 1920 s... was clearly the golden age for installations of Deagan chimes (our bell tower s brand) nationwide with nearly 300 assemblies built during that period. As the decade proceeded, the size of the chimes increased (more tubes) and this was evident in the two Baltimore Deagan systems. A 10- tone system still operates at the Epiphany Lutheran Church (4301 Raspe Avenue in Baltimore) since These chimes are played using the keyboard for about 10-minutes each Sunday and at a Wednesday vigil service. Photo by Joe Bozik Four years later, a larger 16-tube system (similar to our chimes arrangement) was installed in the belfry of the Grace United Church of Christ (1404 South Charles Street) in Baltimore. The same Deagan engineer, Roy Lofink, who set up the Epiphany Lutheran s system, also assembled Grace United s Deagan chimes in March of No automatic working mechanism was ordered (automatic chiming devices not yet invented and perfected by Deagan), only a 16-note keyboard that was near the organ console, allowing playing of the chimes during weekend services. Unfortunately, this system has not been operating for decades, although there is interest in the congregation to fund restoration in the future. Curiously, our founding pastor, Msgr. Thomas Smyth s brother, Rev. James A. Smyth, was pastor of St. Peter the Apostle Church (13 South Poppleton Street) in the 1930 s, and perhaps Msgr. Smyth s heard these Baltimore Deagan chimes on his visits. Have a story? Chime-in 1RetroJoe@gmail.com. Advent Wreath Workshop Sunday, December 3 Parishioners are invited to participate in a long tradition of creating an Advent Wreath in preparation for our Savior s birth. Join family and friends for this traditional workshop in the Blessed Sacrament School Auditorium after the 10:30 a.m. Masses. This event is fun for all the creative at heart. The smell of fresh greens and incense will lift your spirits for the upcoming Holy Season. The cost is $40 per wreath. Pre-registration is recommended and may be done on the Blessed Sacrament website at org, under Upcoming Events. When registering via the web, payment must be included. Also, signup sheets are available in the School and Parish Offices and in Church entrances. Please return forms along with payments to designated baskets located in the Parish or School Offices or drop application forms and checks (memo line Advent Wreath Workshop) in collections baskets at Masses.
