Pastor s Column June 15 Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday as we honor our God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit One God in Three Persons. Our reading from the Book of Genesis expresses God s transcendence: He takes the initiative to approach whomever He desires no one can force God to manifest Himself. The Lord reveals to Moses and proclaims He is a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity. When God proclaimed His name, Yahweh, Source of Image: He enumerated the qualities by which we can recognize Him and His action. The Israelites were bound to God by a covenant and were the privileged beneficiary of His conduct through His boundless love, mercy and compassion. When His people turned away from Him, He never ceased to exhort them to come back to Him His love is quick to forgive. Our passage from St. Paul s second letter to the Corinthians, ends with a very familiar sentence, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. This greeting attests to the understanding of the Trinity from the early days of the Church. Nobody has ever seen God but He has revealed Himself by His actions and deeds in this world. One believes in him; one has the certitude of His existence because one discovers His active presence in the world and in oneself, since one is touched by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. This is a concrete and personal experience that happens in faith together with other believers. We are created in God s image and we must live with one another as the three divine Persons live in their unity: in love, joy, harmony, peace, in mutual encouragement in order to seek perfection. God Himself is peace and joy because, in the communion of the three Persons there is nothing lacking in fullness and perfection. We inherit these goods with the salvation gained by Christ through the paschal mystery and are to express this deep bond of friendship in Christ by greeting one another with a holy kiss. We impart to one another the gift of the peace that flows from the Trinity, thereby fostering among ourselves the attributes of love, joy and harmony the very life of the Trinity. Our participation in the life of the Trinity each day on this earth gives us the assurance of entering eternal life one day. In our passage from John s gospel, we read Jesus obedience to the Father reversed the meaning of death, a consequence of sin. From being a punishment, it became the Pasch of eternal life. For God did not send His Son to condemn the world but to show us that in His love, He wants the salvation of the whole world. We know that true love is a gift one offers but does not impose. To overlook this offer, not to recognize it when it presents itself, always has serious consequences one s future, one s life are gravely affected. When the issue is the love of God, eternal salvation is at stake. Each one is responsible for what happens. It is not God who judges and condemns; it is the individual who, by welcoming Love or refusing it, enters life or withdraws from it. 2

3 Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament June 15/June 22, 2014 Youth Corner Question For The Week Week of June 16: The Trinity is celebrated today. How would you describe your relationship with God the Father? With Jesus? With the Spirit? Week of June 23: Jesus tells us that through the Eucharist we will remain in him and he is us. How does the Eucharist keep you in relationship with Jesus? (Source: Please Welcome Our Summer Seminarian, Jack Berard Jack Berard has joined our pastoral staff for the summer. Jack is from Glen Dale, MD, in central Prince George s County; his home parish is St. Hugh s in Greenbelt, MD. He is the fifth of ten children five boys and five girls and went to high school at Eleanor Roosevelt in Greenbelt (he is the only child in his family to attend a public school). Jack then attended Temple University in Philadelphia where he earned a Bachelors degree in Political Science. After completing his university studies, he spent two years as a missionary with an organization called FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) where he served at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2010, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Washington and studied philosophy for two years at Mount Saint Mary s Seminary and has spent the past two years studying theology in Rome at the North American College. Final Play Reading Of The Season On Tuesday, June 17 Join friends and parishioners at 7 p.m. in the parish library for a reading of Circle Mirror Transformation, by Annie Baker, winner of the 2010 Obie Award for the best new American play. It traces the lives of a handful of small-town Vermont residents who gather each week for an acting class taught at the local community center. By the end of the play we seem to see to the very bottom of these souls (New York Times). Their real, offstage lives gradually infiltrate the classroom, revealing insights both humorous and heartbreaking. John Dluhy will lead discussion about this drama; wine and cheese will be served. For further information, call Sunday Readings/Questions For Reflection For June from the Faith Formation Commission Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9: God has shown himself to us through the ages. Besides his name, what did God reveal about himself to Moses on Mount Sinai? What was Moses response to this revelation? What is your response to knowledge of God s love? 2 Corinthians 13:11-13: What do you know about the Trinity from the last lines of this reading: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. God s nature is love, and he has invited us to come along in his company. What are the implications for our community? And, we can all agree with and/or encourage each other in order to live in peace. How important is this to you? Do you encourage people? Is Paul talking about agreeing on everything or only on matters of faith? John 3:16-18: Did the Father do something showing that he so loved the world? What did the Son do? What is your response to God s immense love for the world and for you personally? 4 The Most Holy Trinity/The Most Holy Body And Blood Of Christ Visit Your Parish Library Jerusalem The evocative city, dating from 3000 BC, has captured the hearts of people through history, most recently as we watched Pope Francis on his pilgrimage. Its original name (Urusalim) means foundation of God. Writers have given us their own viewpoint, from Egeria, the pilgrim nun who described the liturgy in the city during the 5th century, to Louis de Wohl s novel David of Jerusalem and the recent Jesus: a Pilgrimage, by James Martin. The wonderful books of photographs, Jesus 2000 and In the Steps of Abraham document the city s vivid multiculturalism. Jerusalem: the Endless Crusade, by Andrew Sinclair ( S62 J47), gift of Shep Abell. The story of Jerusalem s history embodies a quest as well as a place, suggests Sinclair. Even today it is a search for an ideal and a paradise. He describes the Jewish, Muslim and Christian ties, emotional and political, to a city constantly in flux. Each of the three religions sees in Jerusalem the same sacred place, for spirituality can be a matter of geography. The author describes in detail the crusades, the powerful Mongol incursions, and strong characters such as Saladin and Louis IX of France whose last words were said to be, Jerusalem, Jerusalem. He continues the story to the present time. Jerusalem, City of Jesus, by Richard M. Mackrowski, S.J. ( M11 J47), gift of Grace Bitondi. This book is an archaeological and philological exploration of what the city was like before its destruction in 70 A.D. Father Mackrowski does this by examining the historical studies that relate to different aspects, such as the geology, the walls and gates of Jerusalem, the reservoirs and aqueducts, the Temple site, and our Lord s cross and tomb. From these studies he reconstructs the story of Jerusalem. The wonderful photographs add immensely to this book. According to the Talmud, Ten measures of beauty descended from the heavens nine were taken by Jerusalem and one by the rest of the world (from the dust jacket). A New Testament Guide to the Holy Land, by John J. Kilgallen, S.J. (225.9 K553), gift of Shep Abell. The second edition and tenth anniversary of this book has revised maps, new illustrations and an expanded text, all of which enable even the arm-chair traveler to enter into the spirit of the Holy Land and to understand the significance of the Gospel texts in their setting. The author describes each site, six in Jerusalem, and explains the significance of the related Gospel narrative. Finally, there are indexes of texts and subjects as well as a brief survey of important periods and dates. New Exhibit In The Daystar Gallery The work of artists Lee Newman and Ned Wolff, Darkness and Light, is now on display in the main meeting room of the parish center until July 14, The Adult Center All parishioners, 39 and holding, are invited to gather in Apt. 1 in the Chevy Chase apartment building next to the church for fellowship after the 11 a.m. weekday Mass. 5 Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament June 15/June 22, 2014 Pastor s Column June 22 As we celebrate Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus, our first reading recalls the forty-year journey of God s people through the desert. We are reminded that this fortyyear journey was a punishment for the worship of the golden calf. Source of Image: Although they were punished, God provided for the needs of His people. When the people did not find anything to eat God provided manna from heaven for them to eat. At the same time, the gift of manna had another meaning. It was meant to make the people hungry for God, without whom they could not survive, to make them aware that not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. In giving the manna, God tested everyday the faithfulness of His people and the dispositions of their hearts. The same goes for the water, without which there is no life in the desert only death. God gives the water that really quenches thirst and because it becomes a spring of water welling up to eternal life. In our second reading from St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians, we find one of the most important testimonies in the New Testament concerning the Eucharistic faith of the ancient Church. Paul and the Christians at Corinth understood the term communion in the strongest sense: this food unknown to our fathers (Deut. 8:16) establishes between the believer and Christ dead and risen an intimate and a real union. Communion in the Body and Blood of Christ creates, between believers, a new union, a vital one, eminently superior to that which results from the community of faith and hope. Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. Through baptism, believers become members of the Body of Christ. God has reestablished His Covenant by the sacrifice of His Son. Fed by the Body and Blood of Christ, we are brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit. The Eucharist insures and expresses its unity and charity. Source of all virtue, The Eucharist gives the Church life and unceasing growth. Our gospel passage from John follows the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. We learn Jesus is personally the bread, the living bread. Whoever eats it will live forever. Faith in the Eucharist goes hand in hand with faith in the incarnation; Jesus is really the bread for the life of the world because He is true God and true human being. The reality of His humanity, this man, founds the realism of the Eucharist, true Body of Christ, dead and now living at the right hand of the Father, true food. In the Eucharist, we receive the Body and Blood of the risen Christ, eternally living with the Father. It is by virtue of this new condition that He can be our food under this form. It is also because of this new condition that when eating this bread and drinking this wine transformed by the Holy Spirit into the Body and Blood of Christ, we participate already now in the life that the Son shares with His Father. The Eucharist establishes with Christ and through Him with the Father such a close bond that it is comparable to the one that unites the Persons of the Trinity. To participate in the Eucharist is to proclaim the resurrection of Christ and to receive the pledge of it. Find us on Facebook Blessed Sacrament DC Sunday Readings/Questions For Reflection For June from the Faith Formation Commission Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14B-16A: He let you be afflicted with hunger, then fed you with manna... in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. In this statement which is the source of their life: the bread or the promise of God? Did the desert trials test people s obedience to God, or their trust in God? 1 Corinthians 10:16-17: During his Angelus address, Pope Francis said that the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ was an occasion to learn to share the little we are and have, and to never close ourselves off from others. How does this relate to being Eucharist to each other? And, When we eat, we incorporate our food into ourselves. The opposite is true with regard to the Eucharist. When we partake of that bread we are transformed into it. (Dianne Bergant, C.S.A.) What might this mean to you? John 6:51-58: When Jesus gives us himself in the Eucharist, does he give us his presence, or does he give us himself in the action of the whole Paschal Mystery (passion, death, resurrection)? Also consider, God was with his people on their journey, nourishing them with manna and water. How does God respond to your needs on your journey? What is different about the food God gave the people in the desert and the food he gives us?
