Pastor s Column Today we celebrate the anniversary of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. The basilica is the mother of all churches founded down through the ages and gets its name from the Laterani family who had a palace on the Celian Hill which passed into the hands of Fausta, the wife of Constantine I. After the Edict of Milan in 313 the persecution of the Christians ended. The Emperor Constantine gave the Lateran palace to the Church and on November 9, 324 Pope Sylvester I dedicated the basilica to the Holy Savior. As for the palace, it was the residence of the Bishop of Rome used continuously until 1304 when Pope Benedict XI was forced to flee Rome to Avignon until Pope Nicholas V ( ) transferred the general offices of the Church to the Basilica of St. Peter and the Vatican during his pontificate and the Lateran Basilica remained the cathedral of the pope, the bishop of Rome. In our first reading from the Prophet Ezekiel, he experiences an extraordinary vision at a very difficult time in his life. He had served as a priest for his entire life at the Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple was ransacked by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar in 597 B.C. and God s people were exiled to Babylon. As he meditates on these tragic events on the banks of the Kebar canal, he is called by the Lord to be a prophet and realized God had punished the sins of His people but He had not abandoned them He would bring them back to their country and the Temple would be rebuilt. Ezekiel brings this message of hope to the people. In St. Paul s first Letter to the Corinthians, he uses the image of construction to speak of the Church as the Body of Christ. God is the architect of this construction as He designs the plans and directs the work. He is the only one to have at His disposal all the means the graces that allow His work to be accomplished. The Lord chooses His workers and gives them specific tasks according to their gifts and talents. This diversity of gifts and functions is indispensable for the building up of the Church and for its life as the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit leads and guides the activities of the Church inspiring people to the meet the needs of the church throughout history. We are reminded that we are living stones building up the Church, the Body of Christ, and we each have a responsibility to lead lives of holiness and service as Jesus has taught us. In our passage from John s Gospel, we find Jesus expelling the moneychangers and merchants out of the Temple area. We see how Jesus is filled with zeal for the Temple as God s holy house in Jerusalem. Jesus is confronted by the authorities and His answer is direct and puzzling at the same, Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. Jesus is not speaking of the Jerusalem Temple Rembrandt, Christ Driving the Moneychangers but of the temple of His own body. The from the Temple, 1626 Source of Image: statement by Jesus is a sign of what is to come. This major sign, that which justifies what Jesus did and gives authority to His words, the sign that reveals Him as the Son of God, is His resurrection. God bless you, Father Ron 2

Sunday Readings/Questions For Reflection... from the Faith Formation Commission Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12: Consider that water in this reading transforms all that it touches. Does God transform everything he touches, if we let this happen? Have you let God transform your life? 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17: Pope Paul VI initiated and implemented the Second Vatican Council s vast changes. Pope Francis, as he beatified Paul VI on October 19, 2014, called on the church to adapt to changing conditions of society. God is not afraid of new things! That is why he is continually surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways. He renews us: he constantly makes us new. A Christian who lives the Gospel is God s newness in the Church and in the world. How much God loves this newness! How do his remarks relate to this statement of St. Paul s in today s reading: You are God s building. Like a wise master builder I laid a foundation. John 2:13-22: Which do you think it was that enraged Jesus: the selling of animals within the temple itself, exchanging money within the holy place, or the exploitation of the poor? Had the community become so preoccupied with worldly business that it had forgotten its main purpose? 4 Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Visit Your Parish Library What Are the Magazines Saying? The Commonweal Catholic, by Luke Timothy Johnson, Commonweal, October 24, This article commemorates the 90th anniversary of the magazine by an author whose association with it goes back more than twenty years. He lists the many eminent contributors over the years including Jacques Maritain and Dorothy Day; they engaged the pressing issues of the day with a bracing intelligence, freedom, and boldness. Midterm Report on the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family, by Cardinal Peter Erdo, Origins, October 23, The interim report called for greater acceptance and appreciation of divorced and remarried Catholics, cohabiting couples and homosexuals, seeing a need to accept those who want to to feel fully part of the church even if they have experienced failure or find themselves in the most diverse situations. November 11, editorial, Newsletter of the Abbey of St. Gregory, Portsmouth, R.I., November Veterans Day commemorates the end of two world wars; the date marks the end of World War I which in 1918 people hailed as the war to end all wars. Known as the Armistice it ironically planted the seeds of an even greater war. Since then there has never been a time without warfare in the world. 6 Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Blessed Sacrament Parish Council & Commissions Report From October 14, 2014 Meeting The Parish Pastoral Council held its second meeting of the year on October 14. The members heard reports from all the commissions, plus comments from representatives of Blessed Sacrament School and the Sanctuary Sodality. Father Ron presented his priorities, which include Youth and Young Adult Ministry. The Community Life Commission is considering creation of a ministry for Blessed Sacrament high-school students that could sponsor its own activities as well as participate in activities at Our Lady of Lourdes. Council Secretary John Navolio briefed the council on the parish audit an accounting form will submit around the end of the year. He also discussed the importance of close coordination between the council and the parish staff in completing projects. For example, staff will contribute information for an update of the parish s Ministry Book the Communication Commission will undertake. Finally, council members discussed the statutes of the recent Archdiocesan Synod which Cardinal Wuerl has promulgated. The council and commissions, recognizing their mission is consistent with the mission of the Archdiocese of Washington, will look to the offices of the Pastoral Center for guidance and assistance. Administration Commission Early work of the Administration Commission has mostly centered around the parish s wayfinding project. Phase one of the project has included design of signs as part of our overall branding, getting city approval from the DC Public Space Commission allowing us to place our signs in the city right-of-way and seeking quotes for manufacturing the signs. We will be applying for a city permit to install them as soon as we receive the final specifications from the manufacturer. Phase one of the campus-wide wayfinding project includes three signs: one at Chevy Chase Circle, one at the Western Avenue entrance into the parking lot and one in front of the church. A separate address for the church has also been applied for, in an effort to make it easier for our visitors to find us! Future issues we will be addressing include reconstituting the parish Buildings & Grounds Committee, addressing some deferred maintenance and handicapped accessibility issues, and considering enhancements to the church entrances. Interested in serving on the B & G Committee or the Administration Committee? Contact Patty Myler at Community Life Commission The Community Life Commission is currently seeking new members from the parish. The commission supports parish activities by assisting in the recruitment of volunteers for parish activities and helping to ensure that our community is open and welcoming to all members and newcomers. The Welcoming Committee reported that new members can now register on the Blessed Sacrament website in addition to using the traditional paper format. The fall welcoming dinner for new members of the parish took place on October 13. Commission members discussed the need for a more active youth ministry to help young people continue to grow in their faith while staying actively involved in the parish through their high school years. In addition, there was discussion about the need to provide more support to promote existing opportunities for parish-wide participation such as the recent Walk for the Homeless. Communications Commission The newly-established Communication Commission will gather for its first meeting on November 6, taking up an existing plan that covers both internal communications and Blessed Sacrament s communication with the outside world. Initial projects will include (1) updating the parish Ministry Book and posting it online, (2) reviewing the parish website to make it easier to navigate and more welcoming to visitors, (3) considering ways to make the parish Facebook page more interactive, and (4) creating brief videos (welcome, explanation of the Seasons of Advent and Lent, etc.) with links to the website. Anyone interested in joining this creative commission please contact Frank Pellegrino: fmpelleg@us.ibm.com or Faith Formation Commission This commission is grounded in the conviction that a full Catholic life requires lifelong learning. Our participation in the New Evangelism, to which the Church is calling us, necessitates an ever deepening understanding of our faith. Our parish s Director of Religious Education, Therese Recinella, offers a number of very good programs for Adult Formation, and runs a first-rate School of Religion, currently serving approximately 325 young people. The special task the Faith Formation Commission has undertaken this year is to endeavor to broaden these educational offerings, so that that they will be accessible to all parishioners seeking to make faith formation an ongoing part of their lives. We want to devise ways of doing this that will simultaneously build and deepen community in our parish. We are still forming this commission, and if you might be interested in assisting in our efforts, or would just like to hear more about them, please contact Milton Grenfell at grenarch@verizon.net, or Outreach Commission The St. Thomas More School Supply Drive was very successful. Students seeking service hours from many area schools including Blessed Sacrament collected supplies and donations for our sister school. Regarding the SHARE Program, through donations fresh produce and frozen meats are distributed to individuals and families visiting the Social Concerns Office for outreach services; turkeys will be distributed for Thanksgiving. The Greg Gannon Canned Food Drive will take place on December 6. Student and adult volunteers are needed. The commission also discussed the need to increase membership in the Helping Hands Ministry, which provides transportation to fellow parishioners to attend Mass, and doctor appointments. Worship Commission The Worship Commission included representatives from communion ministry, ushers, Altar Guild, and liturgical art and environment. New extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and ushers are needed, particularly for the 5:30 Masses on Saturday and Sunday. Continuing formation for current ministers is in the planning stage. Scheduling software is now being used for the assignment and notification of communion ministers and altar servers. The commission members discussed the desirability of creating and maintaining a master worship calendar available to the directors of liturgical ministries that would show all upcoming liturgical events for the parish and school. For example, when a 5:30 Sunday evening Mass is designated the Confirmation Enrollment Mass, there is a need for more than the usual number of extraordinary ministers, something that the director of communion ministry needs to know for scheduling purposes. A master calendar readily accessible to those responsible for the worship ministries would be a great help. Worship Commission Chair Mickey Edwards attended the seasonal parish liturgy planning meeting for the Advent and Christmas seasons. She is also enrolled in a four-week on-line course on liturgy committee structure and function from Boston College s C-21 program. From The Community Fully Alive: Discovering What Matters Most (Presented By Timothy Shriver) Chair of the Special Olympics and son of its founder, Eunice, Shriver recounts his experiences with people who have achieved full and satisfying lives while living with intellectual disabilities. Book-signing and talk on Thursday, November 13, 7 8:30 p.m., Politics & Prose, 5015 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. 6
