2 Gurpurbs are festivals that are associated with the lives of the Gurus. They are happy occasions which are celebrated most enthusiastically by Sikhs. The most important Gurpurbs are: The birthday of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism (April or November) The birthday of Guru Gobind Singh, founder of the Khalsa (January) The martyrdom of Guru Arjan (June) The martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur (November/December)

6 At the time of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, a large number people of all castes were becoming Sikhs. Even a large number of Muslims had accepted Guru Arjan as their guide and religious teacher, or Guru. This was unacceptable to some of the Mullahs (Muslim Priests) who became determined to put a stop to it. They convinced Emperor Jahangir that Guru Arjan Dev Ji was a deterrent to the spread of Islam, had insulted Islam and urged him to stop Guru Jee. The ghastly solution they came up with was to end Guru Arjan Dev Ji s life. Guru Ji was given 2 choices: Pay a 200,000Rs fine, and erase hymns in the Adi Granth which were opposed to the Hindu and Muslim rituals. OR Accept Death Guru Jee accepted death, He said; fines are for thieves, robbers, slanderers and the wicked. Men devoted to religion did not belong to that category. With regards to the hymns in Adi Granth; I cannot erase or alter an iota. I am a worshipper of the Immortal God. The hymns contained in the Adi Granth are not disrespectful to any Hindu incarnation or any Mohammedan prophet. It is certainly stated that prophets, priests, and incarnations are the handiwork of the Immortal God, Whose limits none can find.

7 Day 1 of Torture Guru Jee were not given anything to eat or drink, kept awake throughout the night. Guru Sahib bore all this calmly. He remained immersed in Simran. Day 2 of Torture Guru Jee was put in boiling water. It SCALDED his body, but they sat calmly and quietly feeling no pain. He felt no anger against those who were torturing them. Guru Jee remained absorbed in the sweet remembrance of Waheguru. Day 3 of Torture Guru Jee was put in boiling water again and red hot sand was poured on top of him. Again Guru Jee felt no pain, Guru Jee repeated: ਤ ਰ ਕ ਆ ਮ ਠ ਲ ਗ ਹਰਰ ਨ ਮ ਪਦ ਰਥ ਨ ਨਕ ਮ ਗ O Waheguru! Your actions seem so sweet to me. Nanak begs for the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Day 4 of Torture Guru Jee was made to sit on red hot iron plate and red hot sand was poured on top of him. He sat with his mind fixed on Waheguru. Guru Jee s friend, Mian Mir, a Muslim saint, rushed to see him. When Mian Mir saw the ghastly scene, he cried out and said, "O Master! I cannot bear to see these horrors inflicted on thee. If you permit me, I would demolish this tyrant rule (Mian Mir is said to have possessed supernatural powers at that time).

8 Guru Jee smiled and said, "All is happening in accordance with Waheguru's Will. Men who stand for Truth have often to suffer. Their sufferings give strength to the cause of Truth. Go, brother. Pray for me. Pray for the success of my cause. Pray for victory to truth." Mian Mir asked, why endure the suffering at the hands of the vile sinners when you possess great supernatural powers? Guru Jee replied, "I bear all this torture to set an example to the Teachers of True Name, that they may not lose patience or rail at God in affliction. The true test of faith is the hour of misery. Without examples to guide them, ordinary persons' minds quail in the midst of suffering." Upon this Mian Mir departed commending the Guru's fortitude and singing Guru Ji s praises.

9 Day 5 of Torture Guru Jee prayed and uttered; ਤ ਰ ਕ ਆ ਮ ਠ ਲ ਗ ਹਰਰ ਨ ਮ ਪਦ ਰਥ ਨ ਨਕ ਮ ਗ O Waheguru! Your actions seem so sweet to me. Nanak begs for the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. He was taken to Ravi river, where Guru Jee took a dip and where Guru Arjan Sahib Ji left his body and merged with God s Light to became the first martyr of the Sikh religion. Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji was the first Sikh Guru to be SHAHEED (martyred). The Shaheedi of Guru Arjan Dev Ji started a tradition which carried on throughout history, and will continue to carry on. Guru Arjan Dev Ji said that they can accept Shaheedi but cannot accept INSULT. The way a leader or prophet lives becomes the CHARACTER OF THE FOLLOWERS. Guru Sahib showed that a Sikh should live with DIGNITY and die with HONOUR, and that a Sikh should never tolerate insult.

11 Why do you think Sri Guru Arjan Dev allowed for his Shaheedi to take place? To teach Sikhs that they should stand up for Truth. To uphold Truth with no concern for the consequences. To teach Sikhs that it s not enough just to be religious inwardly. Why do you think Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee allowed for his Shaheedi to take place? To show Sikhs that the path of Truth is not an easy path to follow but the most rewarding. To lead by example. With regards to the hymns in Adi Granth; I cannot erase or alter an iota. 12 How is the Martyrdom of Guru Arjan remembered in a Gurdwara? What happens? (Can you remember what these words mean?!) Akhand path: 48 hrs non stop reading if Guru Granth Sahib Bhog Hukamnama Kirtan Katha Langar Re tell the story of Guru Arjan s martyrdom. Bhog (verb meaning 'to end' or 'to conclude') In Sikhism, it is used for observances that are fulfilled along with the reading of the concluding part of the Guru Granth Sahib.

13 Chabeel Week is a week dedicated to the Sikh Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The Guru had been torched for 5 days by being told to sit on a hot plate and then had hot boiling sand being poured over him. Soon after he was told to sit in boiling hot water. Guru ji took this really calmly and peacefully and performed Simran (meditation). This lasted for 5 days until Guru ji asked to go and bathe in the river. The Mughal emperor was so pleased because he knew that the water would cause his wounds even more pain, so he let him go in. Thousands crowed to watch what was happening but when Guru ji entered he never came out. After that, Guru ji was confirmed Shaheed {a important person that dies}, he was announced the first Sikh martyr and to remember his great sacrifice people in Punjab gave out Chabeel {sweet rose milk} or just cold drinks. This was to cool everyone in hot summer months and to remind everyone to stay cool and calm.

14 As Chabeel week is going international this year I really wanted to pay my part in doing something at school.
