1 May 2018 Newsletter Dodge Center United Methodist Church Pastor s Message Pastor: Loren Olson (Pastoral Care) Cell: Pastor: Joyce Parker (Evangelism and Outreach) Cell: Pastor: Linda Boorman Cell: Administrative Assistant : Janet Sinning secdcumc@gmail.com Phone: (Office) Office Hours: Monday & Thursday s 8:00-1:00 Website: Visit us and like us on Facebook! Dodge Center United Methodist Church PO Box First Street NE Dodge Center, MN Worship service: 9:00 am Coffee/Fellowship: Following church service Due May 20 : There are special days in May. Many of us look forward to the fishing opener each year. Methodist historians like to mark Aldersgate Day on the 24 th, commemorating the day when John Wesley s heart was strangely warmed and his ministry changed direction and sparked the Methodist revival. On Memorial Day we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to serve our country, which many broaden to include remembering their own loved ones who have died. But maybe the most important observance of the month is Mother s Day. For most of us, Mother s Day truly is a day of appreciation. I ve met a few people through the years whose mothers were too broken and wounded to fulfill the traditional nurturing role, but most of us cannot begin to count the ways that we have been blessed and shaped by our mothers. We consider our mothers to be true gifts from God. In our faith tradition, Mary, the mother of Jesus played a key role. It was Mary s faithfulness that made the story possible. We see her as a worried and scolding mother, especially when he got lost at the temple, or when as an adult his teachings begin to upset people. We see her as a proud mother when she witnessed his turning water into wine, or as she joined the crowd welcoming him into Jerusalem. We see her as a loving and grieving mother who was present for the trial and crucifixion when so many others ran away. There s something real about her portrayal in the gospels, acting as any mother would to encourage, guide, and protect her adult child. Thank God for moms! Let us be sure to celebrate them if they are still living, and let us honor and remember them if they passed on to glory. When I was serving in the South, Mother s Day was often the second highest attendance Sunday of the year because everybody joined mom for worship. If we can, let s join our mom s for worship this Mother s Day, as we thank them and as we thank God for the gift of our moms. See you in church. Loren
